What a difference before and after. Polyurethane Min wax gives a nice shine and protection. Its time consuming to sand the sides by hand but I say. Sanding goes best with good music and ganja.

Thanks, great video. I am 58 y/o haven't used an edger since high school. Our oak stairs have deep grooves in the wood pattern I believe they were never sanded.

Thanks for a great, straight-to-the-point video. I just subscribed! I am planning to make my stairs darker. When do I apply the stain and when do I go in with the polyurethane step?
@renoforless10 ай бұрын
Hey! After you sand and clean the steps very well, you will then apply your stain and let it dry according to the instructions on the can. After that you will add 2 coats of polyurethane. Make sure the polyurethane dries between coats.

I want to do this as well for my stairs. I’m glad I found your video, very helpful. We have what I believe is golden oak. I would like to make them more of a Smokey grey look, do you think that’s possible? Thank you in advance.
@renoforlessАй бұрын
It may be possible. Make sure to sand down any previous stain and apply the right stain that matches the color you're going for. Make sure to test a small area first and let it dry to see if you like it before doing all the stairs.

Hi there, loved the result. The Polyurethane is water or oil based? Thanks
@renoforless3 жыл бұрын
The polyurethane I used was oil based
@Lislopez114 ай бұрын
What finish do you recommend if you wanted to keep the natural color after you sanded it? I did this to my stairs and want to keep the light tone just protect it with a finish but keep the color.
@renoforless4 ай бұрын
The best option I could think of is using a water based polyurethane instead of an oil based one. Oiled based polyurethane tends to yellow a lot more than the water based ones.

How long did it take for Sanding? Poly to dry for the whole stairs?
@renoforless3 жыл бұрын
It took about an hour and a half to sand all the steps. The poly dried after 45 minutes between coats

Doing every other step was a great idea. How long do you have to wait before you can walk on the steps the after the first coating?
@renoforless22 күн бұрын
@@tavonb6478 I recommend doing th 2nd or 3rd coat of polyurethane before you walk on them. I waited 24 hours after my final coat before walking on them.

Why do stairs have grits after applying polyurethane? It felt smooth before applying polyurethane.
@renoforless10 ай бұрын
You have to gently sand with 220 grit sand paper over each coat of polyurethane. There should be instructions on the can.

This may be a stupid question, but you said you apply the polyurethane and then sand and then apply a 2nd coat...you let it dry in between right? And if so, about how long does that take?
@renoforless3 жыл бұрын
Hey that's a good question. I do let the polyurethane dry between coats. It takes 4 to 6 hours to dry before you can sand it and apply a second coat. Make sure to wipe the stairs after you sand it and before applying another coat.
