Another amazing technical video James! Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to share all this valuable information in detail. It's great to see you building a robust and reliable system from years of experience and refining it into a simple and efficient model. Have you been able to successfully integrate all of these components onto a single tablet device through the multiplex and wifi networking? It seems to me the ideal configuration would potentially be to have all of these functions including the digital switching controls all seamlessly accessed from any tablet that you have installed throughout the vessel such as at the helm station, main cabin, nav desk, with spares pre-programed and configured incase of failure for immediate emergency redundancy. In addition to the navigation electronics you could theoretically integrate other “smart home” features and automations such as climate control, lighting, music, pumps, security cameras and power management all from a single (or multuple) relatively inexpensive handheld devices that are also battery powered and waterproof. I also wonder if you see Apple devices as being a capable and reliable solution to this or if you still consider Linux as the preferable platform for its customization and open source functionality. Hi Spencer, thanks for kind words. I guess you could do all of this if you want to, but it's not really necessary if I'm honest. It works great as it is with the main control at the nav station for digital switching. Don't forget you can program the light switches to do almost anything also, kind of crazy the possibilities. I think it's of value to sometimes seperate systems so it's easier to problem solve. One of the handy things would be to have more engine info within opencpn which is possible as the can bus system is already there. Mac works great on opencpn and the beauty is you can do whatever you want depending on budget. For low power consumption I'd still take a Linux based dc computer as the dependable heart of the system. So many options though

James, amazing that a Doctor knows so much about IT Systems! I too saw the O Kelly video where you said something like "there's not a Chart Plotter anywhere on this vessel"... bold statement! I also recall one of your older videos (in Columbia?) when you were on your Neel and had your 2nd (3rd?) $$$ B&G Display go down and you said something about hacking the system to ditch B&G, but I did not really know where you were headed. Good stuff. Thanks.

You know there's applications to deal with those voltage drops on NMEA networks? Maetron and Actisense I think both make them because yeah you have to plan for how much power everything is taking no matter what you do or what method of delivery. That's just the nature of Direct Current power. Eventually you can hose your electronics through undervoltage if you don't pay attention to it. The NKE may be better for sheilding and it ends there, again, Maetron and other mfr make shielded NMEA 2000 cables nobody is required to buy the cheapest unshieded cables they can find. Unless it's a AC power source if you're having voltage drops from the length of runs you'll have repeated problems until you solve that voltage drop issue.

Yep, really liked that. Lots of good information. I hope you follow up on durability, and compatibility issues as you use it. But it would be nice to assemble systems focused on user preference and satisfaction instead of corporate profit and one size fits all products. You did forget to touch on your unhappiness with Navionics. Maybe hit that on you next vid. Cheers!

To say that if you were looking at a yacht over 28ft you’d not use instrumentation that uses NMEA to interface is a little over the top. I’ve spent my life sailing and have run some of the worlds most well known super yachts, which are over 60m (200ft) and they all use NMEA 2000 to interface with each other and it works perfectly. The cables are also shielded as was NMEA 0183 in the early 90’s. Love your boat but why make her so complex and why doesn’t she run off solar alone? This would remove a huge amount of complexity and weight from the vessel, which should be every sailors focus as a simple boat is a reliable boat and a reliable boat costs less to run and uses less of your own time and energy which makes sailing far more stress free and enjoyable.

Beautiful boat! Most PCs are actually DC powered - your desktop contains a transformer to power the motherboard with DC. Really interesting to hear about the NKE instruments and the Kubota generators. It hadn't occurred to me that NMEA would give problems given how ubiquitous it is. Would be very interested in how you have RF switches with no batteries, that seems impossilbe! I remember from previously seeing your autodump system for the sheets - very clever and simple system. Similarly I've had a look at open CPN before but think I need to persist with it a bit more, impressive features! It did occur to me that possibly your B&G failures may have been related either to EMP from lightning or possibly if it was a european unit in a US boat even if the voltage was transformed if it's running at 60Hz rather than 50 and so more power going through the system (or similarly the reverse) which overtimes can go worse.

You're absolutely right about the PC being dc powered, it's just that the watts output on the dc switching cannot supply that much power. Hence the need to run off the inverter. Not a massive issue as long as you have a dc backup. The issues I have seen with NMEA I have seen on many boats through my travels and I often try help others with theirs and educate myself at the same time. It's definitely something many others suffer from. Thankfully we have options!

It's actually not NMEA but they massively save on the input filtering the input DC, also via NMEA means aĺl peaks,distortions and surges hit the device, especiallyraymarines Axiom and Quantum series as well as new B&G series. I run a 12V to 12V isolated DC2DC converter (victron orion 12/12/30 , non smart one...smart is the charger) inbetween main powerczble and input of switchboard. That galvanically isolates all the navigation equipment plus NMEA and also the radar from the rest of the system and it also delivers an adjustable stabilised voltage, i set mine to 14,4V so it's 13,8V minimum at the furthest NMEA device. Since then no issues anymore also with the furthest away device in NMEA. 12V equipment works min till 15V pumps even like more, so I have a 2nd one with 15,4V running where the fridge,freezers, electric toilet and sweetwater pressure pump is working off so they work with optimum voltage min 15V at device compensating voltage drop..waterpump runs much quite, shorter and keeps pressure better up and at the same time isolates the spikes they produce from rest of system.

What are you using at the helm station? Chartplotters? Have a look at orca core.... I use that with Samsung S7FE tablets...Nice 12.4 screen tablet for 440Euro

This is a very intelligent solution chris and means that you would probably only need to carry a few spares of the DC DC converter on your journey. They can be quite sensitive in of themselves in my experience.

Just using the phone or notepad tablet, but as the screen can be seen from the helm stations usually does the job. It helps to focus us on using the compass and keeping our old fashioned navigation skills such as transits and 3 point fixes.

What? Did you say Navico has ARPA radar? Since when? I'm pretty sure it's just MARPA, so it does not acquire, analyse & track automatically, unlike Furuno which is true ARPA radar. Big difference. It's a shame the OCPN radar plugin does not support ARPA radar, that would really be good. For short handed bluewater cruisers, ARPA is a significant safety advantage compared to MARPA. Re N2K on larger boats & voltage drop, you just add another DC power input connector where ever you need to. It's not really an issue. Do you see a problem with that?

Opencpn does have ARPA with the radar plugin, works great for me with Halo 24. Clearly its the software that does the work. WRT N2k, yes adding another DC power input along the backbone doesn't cut it. Also the cables still are not shielded. Hence why so many replace their autopilots etc after a few years.

Ummm, not sure you understand the differences between ARPA vs MARPA. All Navico Halo series radars whether from B&G, Simrad etc are NOT ARPA, they are MARPA functionality. And if you check I think you will find OPCN does NOT support real ARPA radar functions. I know of several large cats with N2K systems for long time and complex systems with long backbone, the voltage is not an issue with properly designed system with adequate voltage boost connections. If only the data lines are shielded, how does that prevent transient spikes from lightning induced in the rest of the wiring of the autopilots? Sorry, I don’t get it. Are you trying to just protect from RF interference?

Hi Rob, myself and Bobby are pretty clear with the differences, ARPA is automatic recognition of the targets where as MARPA requires manual identification of the target to be analysed. The plug on for opencpn that does radar supports Arpa. It works extremely well and is one of the great advantages. I think the best thing to do is get some more videos when offshore to show you it working in full force. Hope this will help. You are right if designed well there are certainly less problems with the N2k stuff but looping of cable is a common problem. The cable itself is unreliable and some of us such as SAN my friend Mathias use Faraday cages for protection. Like I mentioned in the video we can delve into this more if you folks want.
