Doors on sheds and outbuildings can often easily be opened by a potential thief, here a length of unistrut and unistrut saddle clamps are used to make a bar that spans past the full width of the doors which means the doors cannot be opened without using the key- even if the hinges are removed from the door.

But since the carriage bolts are going through the flange of the bracket and the washer, the square portion of the carriage bolt's head is probably not digging into the wood, thus kind of defeating the purpose of the carriage bolt. Spot welding the carriage bolt to the bracket would keep it from spinning though.

@@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire Doesn't matter - the bolts don't even have to be tight - the whole purpose of the bolt is that you need access to the rear to remove, which you ONLY have if you have if you can open the doors.

Great video and great idea to use Unistrut for this purpose. One point to keep in mind, depending on how far the doors will swing out, looking at the position where you have mounted the "U" brackets, it looks like they would interfere with opening the doors past 90-degrees. It could easily damage the hinges if there is no fixed stop preventing the doors from opening further. I'd recommend locating the brackets further out from the doors, perhaps 10 or 15 cm. While planning such an installation, keep in mind that while it might be handy to do things a particular way because of an existing stud, you should consider everything and mount the bracket where you need it even if you need to add an additional stud or horizontal cross member.

First let me say I like the idea a lot. That said, if using the unistrut (or similar) bar you may consider putting a steel plate behind the seams of the doors where they open because without that, a simple sawzall could fit in the cracks between doors etc. and cut through that in a jiffy. With a nice thick and long steel plate behind it you may slow them down. If they were going to bring screwdrivers and bolt cutters to get into the original locks and hinges they may just have a sawzall too. A solid steel bar in lieu of unistrut could also help a lot as well. Honestly though your fix will likely deter most would be common thieves, but if they know you have something good in there then who knows. It's an unmanned building and lots of times it is nowhere near the main dwelling so making noises etc may not be an issue for them.

Good security update for the shed. I can see a little issue with the positioning of the bar brackets - when the shed door is open to 90 deg it would touch the bracket and any further movement it would start to press on it and probably break the wood.

I just had my shed broken into and some stuff stolen. I'm adding a full home security package with ingress detection on all doors and windows, plus 24 hour outside video surveillance on both doors of the house. For the shed, I'm going to use your security method for the door, plus a motion inside and an ingress sensor on the door itself. I'm going to put a 160 DB alarm sired on the outside of the house and a 140 DB alarm siren inside the shed. These sirens will sound when the security system detects intrusion. When my security alarms go off, I want the cops to know they are needed without me even calling them (though the alarm company will do this anyway). Anyone inside that shed with the alarm goes off is going to need serious hearing protection within seconds, or they will suffer permanent hearing damage.

By putting the brackets so close to the edge of the door frame, you have limited how far the door can be opened. With the hinges that you have on that door, it looks like you could have originally opened it 180 degree (assuming it didn't bind on something else). With your bracket location, you've probably limited it to around 90 degrees. If you moved it a bit further back, you could open the door quite a bit more -- moving it back the thickness of the bracket + washer (looks to be 2" or so) would give you another 45 degrees.

Puh! This won't work once you've built me my Terminator! A great idea though, & although some might think this is overkill, you make an important point about the "weakest link". When I worked at Homebase, I had a contretemps with another member of staff for putting a cheap number pad-lock on the tools cupboard. Do you know the ones I mean? They sometimes come in packs of three. I had to quit the talk, & show the bloke how easy it was to twist & buckle the padlock off! Some insensitive words were slurred in exchange for my wisdom!! But I stand by my statement that most small padlocks are useless.

what size bolts are those ? Thanks for the reply. I figured out a slight improvement. I noticed while using a similar lock as you did "ABUS 82/63 Monoblock Solid Brass Padlock" when locked and in place it can be pushed up to expose the shackle to bolt cutters but if you take about four 1/8 inch thick washers with a hole big enough for the shackle to fit through and grind it down to fit inside the uni strut you can take away all that slack that allows this to happen thus completely protecting the shackle. Just put some epoxy on each washer, grind the assembly to fit inside the channel then epoxy it in place. Another thing I'm doing is mounted to each door on the inside bottom and top I'm putting a slide bolt that will securely latch into two 1/2 inch nuts inserted into a hole I drilled out for them. This way when I'm working in there in the winter and it's nasty as can be the doors are securely shut and also I can latch them both, exit out my side door and know it's about as secure as it can be coupled with your idea using the unistrut across the outside. Thanks for the idea as it was the best solution after much research. :)

My take on this project would be to install an Abus High Security hasp and staple with backing plates,drill through and bolt.No chance of levering them off. Second,replace all hinge screws with Torx Pin Security bolts,with nylocs on rear.Even if thief has the correct tamper proof bit,they will only loosen less than 1mm,before just rotating in the hole. just mix up some metal glue and seal those bolts down permanently. bonus points = file them so they are round, then metal glue the outside of the bolt like you're caulking it but with metal glue for that clean look. downside is that it's permanent, upside is the thieves also won't be able to fuck with your hinges nearly as easily.

Awesome video. I did the same. However, why do you use carriage bolts if you're going to double nut the back or use nylon lock nuts? I somewhat feel that carriage bolts are better cosmetically, but isn't it redundant to have BOTH carriage bolts and some form of method to lock the nuts. I just feel the redundancy forces us to unnecessarily damage the threads - which is suboptimal if you might ever desire to reuse the carriage bolts. What's your opinion on this?

Hi Cliff, TLC seem to stock it all - www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Trunking_Galv_Index/Univolt_Unistrut/index.html Most electrical wholesalers such as CEF or Edmundson-electrical normally carry large stocks of unistrut, where you can just call in (although you might need an account). All the best for the new year 👍

Mount the brackets further out and you'll also be able to open the door further. By mounting the brackets that close to the edge of the door frame, he limited himself to probably around 90 degrees of opening on the doors.

Great video. Also instead of double nuts, could 1 sheer nut be used?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The shear nuts do not work too well on timber as they pull into the timber before the shearing torque is reached, so I don't think you would be able to shear it before it sunk too far into the wood. Thanks for the comment ;-)
@kevinfegan9148
@kevinfegan9148 8 жыл бұрын
+Ultimate Handyman - You can use a shear nut if you put a regular nut on first and lock the shear nut against the first nut. While you would still be using 2 nuts it offers a bit more security. If someone got in through a window, they could remove the brackets from the inside to open the doors. Shear nuts would make that a bit harder.

Ohh mate I totally agree, if someone wants to get through they got to cut it which will make a very large amount of noise, especially as my shed is in a courtyard garden. Anyway mate I did this today, I only have 1 door so put a bracket in the center, behind each bracket I put a 500mm piece of unistrut, secure as anything! My issue I have now is that it's pretty snug in the bracket when I'm sliding it along it's getting caught making it quite hard. Any ideas how I can help this, I mean I could grease it but my hands will get greasy everytime I use it! Thanks for the video 👍🏼

+wombat I bought a few of them from ebay, but to be honest they are not that secure and are only made or brass. A better option would probably be a more secure shackle or disc padlock. Also the square one I used is not brilliant outside, I put one on a gate and it was seized in a few weeks. The one on the summer house has been ok, because water cannot fall on it due to the overhang.

@ultimatehandyman

The bottom bolt would not tighten up. You can't grip anything from outside as coach bolts were used. The thread was not damaged intentionally, but when you grip it with mole grips, it tends to damage the threads, which is why I put the second locking nut on before using the mole grips.
