But I don't have instructions, so who can I turn too..!? "Sam the (model) Train man..!" Even if this is an 'Old Video.' It's just what I needed..! Sam your the Main Man..! Very helpful video, I have a Mainline Rebuilt Patriot to sort out, bought it cheap as a poor runner. Nothing doing putting power to the wheels so took body off and put the test meter on continuity between the wheels and the brush holders and that was fine, put power to the brush holders and it ran for a short while and it stopped, no smoke or nasty smells so maybe a brush problem so have ordered new brushes and springs to fit after a good clean as per your video. Many thanks..........Mike.

Yep very useful, I've got quite a few Mainline. I find the smaller 0-6-0 Collett goods, 2-6-0 and Manor are rather erratic runners even with regular servicing. The Jubilee and Scot are more stable but a bit proven to the front bogie jumping off over points. I tend to take lots of digital photos when taking them apart to make reassembly a little more easy. Keep up the good work; always enjoy the videos.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, yeah you're right, the 0-6-0 certainly is an erratic runner, I had to buy a whole other engine as a donor to get mine to run smoothly! That's definitely a good idea though, that's saved me a few times from getting confused lol! Cheers, Sam :)

Thank you, Sam, for sharing this video and another one where you had not one B1, but two. An LNER and a BR Early Crest. You did the review on the Green one and gave it a score of 8/10, but in your scores, you did not at that time have a Mechanism rating. I have to get some new brushes and springs for her and I will order a new set of axle joiners for the B1 and the J72, As for a B12 running Chassis that I bought about the same time, but with a different motor fitted, like the one in the Blue B12. If I remember I will take some photos of it and email them to you. I have waited three years for these models to reach Thailand. (Cost of Postage) Martin. Thailand.

It's good to see your mistakes. It is nice to know I'm not the only one that does it. For cleaning I use Isopropyl Alcohol, it is very gentle on plastics but it does remove dirt. When I worked on computers I used it on the cases and keyboards to clean them. It even left the shine on the case and worn key pads. I was not sure about servicing the motor on the Standard Class 4 MT. It is roughly the same and it looks the same with the brushes. Those little springs do run away, even being careful. I found mine as well, it's good to watch them when removing. Thank you.

Interesting video Sam. Have you ever tried using graphite powder to lubricate the axle journals? I have been doing this for some time now in split chassis locos. I clean all the old oil off first with a solvent - lighter fuel looks ok - then dry lubricate with the powder. As graphite is both a lubricant and a conductor they seem to run well and I always find that a service shows an immediate improvement in running...John

This video was just what I needed today! I had a Bachmann 4-6-0 loco with broken valve gear and a Mainline chassis that I had picked up on EBay with good valve gear but non runner. It turns out that the previous owner had taken the motor apart and not replaced or had lost the springs. The Triang ringfield springs fit perfect and my non runner now runs. The body from the Bachman fits perfectly on the Mainline chassis. I now have a combined runner! The only issue now is that the bogie wheels are jumping the track on some of the points. Any suggestions for that? Thanks!

Great service demo. How do I repair A OO Gauge Mainline 4-6-0 Standard Class 4MT Pushrods? One of them the pin has come out of a plastic bit about half way down the side. I am lucky, I bought this like it was. The lucky part was when I took the body off I found the pin in there! I am having trouble fitting it back. I also found the wheels were moving round independently of each other. So, the pushrods are out of line too. It was in very good condition and the motor works, it just does not mone on the track.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Duncan! Hmm, that's tricky - I must admit, I've never had any mainline valve gears to pieces. First of all, you'll need to find out whether the wheelset is correctly quartered... all the crank pins/holes should line up on all wheels, with a 90 degree offset on the two sides of the model. Then you'll have to find out how the pin goes in - is it screwed or just pushed in? Good luck! Sam :)
@duncanwatson90546 жыл бұрын
The one that has come out is push in. I think this poor little engine has had a hard life. Up the other end to the motor is two little screws, one either side. they go into a plastic shim. on mine it has broken and when you take the motor apart to clean and oil, the assembly becomes very loose and the two plastic bushes that the wheel cover screws, screw into, fall out. Also the plastic axles are cracked and the wheels just rotate in them. I may have to glue them into place. (with great care, of-corse.)

I find a lot of my Ringfields run badly for a few minutes after a service. I put it down to the Carbon Brushes being disturbed and needing just reseat themselves properly. I can't see lubricating the axels causing an issue as the pickups are on the actual wheels. The axels have to have some kind of insulation or it would short across the axel as power pickup is on the wheels :).
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that must be the reason - I've noticed the same thing sometimes! The axles in the old type of ringfield (and indeed these mainline locos) do indeed conduct through the chassis/axles, but only on one side. Only one wheel is insulated from the axle, in order to make this work! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Great Loco and video as usual will this loco convert to dcc and could you do a video showing how to Steve
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! You could convert these to DCC, but you'd need to find a way to isolate the motor from the rails! Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend DCCing these though, since they don't run terribly well, and it would make servicing very difficult! Also, there's not really enough space for a decoder inside the body, and the motor is a tight fit, let alone with added wires from the decoder! All the best, Sam :)

@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Hi! That's great to hear - glad you managed to pick some up! The slow running is fairly common, and can be caused by a number of things, but oil on the commutator is usually the big one. Try re-cleaning the commutator and brushes, but this time don't apply any oil to that motor bearing - hopefully that should do it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

haha, luckily I have loads of spare springs.... but I think I've only ever lost one, it must have pinged onto the layout somewhere! I have a Mainline 2-6-0 Mogul, early version, which refuses to run. It started off being jerky but now won't run at all. I have replaced the wheel retaining plate, which is the Bachmann version. I had to glue small plates of plastic in the little grooves, which were not present in the Mainline model. I am hovering on the verge of stripping it down but lose my bottle at the last minute. I have followed your maintenance videos but still can't force myself to have a go. I have decided to leave it alone and run something else instead. I have been told that certain bushes have been split so that's the reason it won't run.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Ahh sorry to hear that Kevin - yes these are quite temperamental things - if it's not working, you've got nothing to lose by trying to strip it down - why not give it a go?? ;D But yeah - if there's an issue with the bushings, that could definitely do it - worth investigating! Hi John, thanks for the message! I'm really sorry to hear that you've gone disabled - I really hope that you're still able to enjoy the Hobby the way you deserve to! I'm sorry if I didn't answer your question - I do try to reply to all my comments - and I've done a quick search, and I have answered all of yours in the past! Yes my entire train set is up in the loft! And yeah, I do know that Hornby (and maybe others) did create some 4-wheel Thomas models - but I thought those were clockwork! I'm in the Nottingham/Derby area of the UK! Thanks for the comment as always, and do feel free to ask me any questions! All the best, Sam :)

Why not use a saucer or other small receptacle for your lighter fluid and then dip your cotton bud into the saucer far cleaner and more professional looking

Do some exercise and maybe leave your train room and go outside every now and then 😉
