Just grabbed an old Hall Class on eBay & as I sub to your channel I was really pleased to find you had made this guide as I will need to give it a service . 90% of the layout & stock is old stuff from eBay as it has been made for my 5 year old grandson. I wanted something he could play with & survive being attacked by dinosaurs etc, not just look at. It is important that the layout is fun for both of us, not something to be precious about. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I think that’s what manufacturers are missing out on, models to be used and enjoyed by all ages, i often get second hand locomotives and rolling stock, as both me and my 11 yr old boy play trains, i dont want to spend 200+ on a single loco that I’m to frightened to take out the box. Most of my locomotives are from the 70s to early 2000s and easy and cheap to repair, and parts are usually pretty cheap to replace on peters spares,

Great video Sam. Love the matter of fact way you disassemble and reassemble these models.What I learned is it really makes sense to have a good suite of tools around just makes it so much easier. Your very good with the soldering iron. I have one but hate using it in case I damage something!
@SamsTrains

+Russell Benton Thanks mate - I've always enjoyed disassembling locos... just as long as I can get them back together again! Thanks for the compliment on the soldering hehe, though I'm sure there's plenty who are much more impressive than me! But yeah, there is always the worry of damaging things with it - I keep the temperature high, which means that you can break contact quickly without causing unnecessary damage! Cheers, Sam :)

i have a kneller hall loco which i purchased off ebay that ran poorly, after a service it ran really well but i did notice that it was quite a noisy loco, after watcing this video it would seem to be normal with these. the earlier triang hornby seem to run smoother and quieter! good video, i enjoyed.

Incredibly useful. I have a triang hymek to restore, one of the old spider assembly motors, and a lot of what you have done on this particular video, can transfer over. Really enjoy these kind of videos, because everyone services things differently, I've been servicing locomotives for many years, yet I still learn from them. I try N gauge, now that is a whole different ballgame! Keep up the good work.

Great job, Sam. I enjoyed this a lot. The three camera set-up works really well and the switching angles makes everything smooth to watch. Yes, I was nervous when you put her on the track...lol...but looking at the work you did, I was quite confident she'd run ok. By the way...I'd love a box of old screws, nuts and bolts from motors :) I've just serviced my old class 37 and I have a few more that could do with a service/rebuild. I had a great time taking the loco apart as per your video ...I learned a great deal...never had the nerve to remove/take apart a motor before ... great fun, and good to see it spinning around like a new one (it was dead to begin with) after cleaning it all up ... was great until I put it back in the chassis ... then it stops dead ... reckon that must be wierd ... runs fine but it only has to be held against the chassis and it stops dead ... hey ho

+Sam'sTrains Hi Sam , wonder if you could help me with a query I have . New DMU I have derails on a couple of my points and thought it was a point problem until I saw a video on same being caused by the wheels too far apart . I do not have a wheel guide so just moved the wheels closer on the offending bogie just a little and problem solved . Would you or John at Chambs 123 know the correct distance between wheels or if there is such an item as a wheel gauge guide . .......Peter .
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Shaw Hi Peter, thanks for the message! You're right, a lot of de-railments do happen as a result of poor gauging - especially on Hornby locos! Me and John tend to gauge locos by eye, although I'm sure there are devices for gauging! If you're able to remove the wheels, you want to put each set on a point, and you want the wheels far enough apart so that they don't drop down between the rails on the point (Hornby points have a tiny section where the track is cut away slightly) You also want them close enough together to have a reasonable amount of left/right movement on the track too. It sounds like you've got the right idea though, I tend just to use trial and error! :) Cheers mate, Sam :)

I believe you made a mistake in that assumption about the motor, the proper way to tell what type of motor it is is by the felt lubricating pads, if it has none, it's an X.03, if it has one, it's an X.03.5 and if it has two, it's an X.04, still a great video!

Great video! I have a model exactly like this one but with plastic driving wheels that I bought off a family friend a while back, however, the loco itself cannot move without assistance. I tried cleaning it with the basic tools and materials around the house but it still sparks and jolts forward when tested. It works okay on curves but refuses to move on straights. Should I try and clean it again properly or just get a new motor off eBay?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Plastic driving wheels?! Is it the insides of the wheels that are plastic maybe? I think I know what you mean! Yes it sounds like there may be motor trouble there - a new one may fix her... make sure you get the one with the nylon worm though, not the metal one! If you don't get any luck there, feel free to send it to me, and I can try to repair it for you! All the best, Sam :)

I'm trying to repair mine now. Previous owner had it setup for Dcc, I run DC so I pulled it out and tried to bring it back to analog. There is power now but when I try to run it it dosent sound great and I see sparks coming from where the brushes are. Would you, Sam , or anyone know what the problem is? I am knew to the hobby and this is my first restoration project
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Good choice converting back to DC - these aren't good on DCC at all! The sparks could be a number of things - is the suppression capacitor missing? Does the magnet feel weak? Can you measure the resistance of each coil to see whether they're in good shape? The sparks can indicate high current draw, which suggests some kind of motor fault. Is the wheelset free to turn without the motor? Good luck!! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

My train set trains had X03 motors. Survived childhood and would have lasted forever if the wheel flanges had not been too deep for modern track. Modern motors might be recessed but not so good for survivability.

Been doin this yet somethin shorted an burned out the motor. I think it was the pickup assembly as before hand the motor was fine with a battery
@TheAntisocialTrain
@TheAntisocialTrain 3 жыл бұрын
For reference, when under a battery, the motor works fine. When hooked up and on the tracks with the shiniest wheels and pickups if ever seen, it doesn't go at all, and occasionally there is smoke
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Rory - the motor shouldn't be burned out unless it's the motor windings themselves that are shorted - the motor should be safe if it was the pickups doing the shorting - you just need to correct the issue before it'll work again. Have you tried a full stripdown and service? Make sure the pickups/wires aren't contacting the metal chassis! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Ive made a complete mess of this service on mine.. i melted the contact of the brush and there is a red wire coming from the engine interior which I have no idea where it goes... I tried to see how yours was wired but your hand was in the way at the crucial moment
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 жыл бұрын
Ahh sorry to hear that mate - is it the plastic brush retainer on the motor that's melted? There's only one essential wire with these, it goes from the pickups to the left motor brush! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains no it was the little (now rounded worn contact pad) I heated the brush so much it fell off. I have just been trying to solder it back on and it flew off never to be seen again... i even put some white paper down too... I am trying to buy some new ones and don't know whether they will fit. As for the red wire it has been soldered onto the contact strip in contact with the wheels and threaded up through the chassis... it just ends in a bear end. I could send a pic. I know what you mean about feeling like killing yourself trying to get those brushes into the motor while still attached... if i had had a cat it would be dead too. My loco is SIr Dinadan. |Thanks for the videos I am becoming obsessed. The wiring harness with the loop i put back on the screw... and then soldered the other end to the top of the bush.,... but the red wire... still puzzling me
