Once you have reassembled the hub and adjusted the cone. Instead of just turning the axle to feel if everything is set, I hold the axle with my index fingers and thumbs and turn the wheel with my middle finger.You can feel the slightest vibrations if the cone is a little tight and can adjust accordingly. I find it much more accurate than just turning the axle on the bench.I then lock the wheel in the frame and test for lateral movement. If too much I repeat the process after tightening the cone allowing for the slightest sideways movement. PS Lateral wheel movement in the frame will not be corrected when you lock the skewers. The lock nuts are locked in position and do not move inwards when the skewers are tightened

👌a strait forward video, I think I've left my cup an cones to long, and possibly have internal hub damage, but at least now i can have a go at it, and it may save me the cost of a new wheel.

A quick way to take out bearings is to use a small magnet. Bearings can be easily put back onto the race as follows: 1. Insert the axle halfway from the other end until it reaches the bottom of the race in order to prevent the bearings from dropping into the axle hole. 2. Drop the required number of the bearings into the bowl-shaped area formed by the bearing race and the end of the axle. 3. Continue to insert the axle slowly while pushing the bearings sideways onto the bearing race. By the way, before you put back the bearings, clean and check them carefully to remove damaged ones.

Can you do a video on servicing a Dura Ace 7600 track hub. I have a brand new hub, but unfortunately just learned that this hub doesn't come seal and I get caught in the rain quite often. I would like to open, degrease and re-grease using a waterproof grease. I was looking into using Finish Line Citrus De-greaser and CV-2 Redline waterproof grease. Not sure what tools I need besides my #15 to remove the wheel from the bike. Maybe don't need a video as I can use this current one for the process of degreasing and applying new grease. More interested in what tools i need and any DONT'S i should not be doing. Thanks!

Hi, nice tutorial. I have a question regarding freehubs. I want to upgrade my old 7 speed Kuwahara Pacer steel frame bike to a 9 speed, will I need to also change the hg freehub body to accommodate a bigger 9 speed cassette, what if any other issue could it cause?

Thanks very much - this is a great video and very useful - I must admit that I have to do my bearings every month or so and there always appear to be quite a lot of rust - a friend of mine told me not to worry about the grease because you have to get a big tin. She told me that it is fine to use butter providing you put quite a lot on - do you think you could use other spreads to take the place of the butter?
@DAN.eight68 жыл бұрын
No no no no no. Copper grease is most affordable option, dont use butter or margerine, jeez it goes mouldy in a fridge let alone wherever hugely warmer you will keep your bike.

Guys I dont have a cone spanner. Can I use a regular spanner? Or anything else.
@MBRmagazine6 жыл бұрын
Unlikely as cone spanners are very thin, and a normal spanner won't usually fit on the flats.

Actually I've serviced a bunch of those hubs. The problem is that they seem to be quite uniqe. And issues with tiny tiny bearings. But they do tend to gather alot of water and therefore dissolve the grease. Which means rust, which means yeah you guessed it. A hub that's shut.
@ErgonomicChair7 жыл бұрын
Heh I just used needle nose pliers, worked alright.

I got a new bike with cup and cone hubs and I have only used the bike about 8 times at trail centers and the my back wheel started to make a grinding sound so I opened it up and the barings on the drive side were completely worn out and rusted but the other side was fine. anyone know what went wrong?
@ChrisBraunston8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Fitz Did you jet wash it? I just had to replace my front bearings on one side (did both but 1 was the problem) because I had Jet washed the front hub and it had damaged the seal and rusted the bearings like you described.

I haven't seen a real working way to adjust the cone into right place like SHIMANO does in its factory, this video is no exception. In the factory their have special tool for this step, which we can't do at home. try with a high-end shimano hub, like XTR, you will never get the same smooth feel after you "serviced" your hub, NEVER !

No idea how to get rid of the loose axle. I have been trying to do it for the past 3 days. Seems like rocket science to me yet on this video it took you 3 minutes. I cannot understand what you are doing by hands to the knot and axle and it is not visible. In my hub you cannot twist anything by hand and the onyly thing that you can turn on the casette side (after taking it off) is the nut.
@MBRmagazine7 жыл бұрын
Your hub may have cartridge bearings, in which case they're not adjustable. When they wear out and become loose, you just have to replace them. What hubs do you have?
@rewind95368 жыл бұрын
Hehehe. The cup is broken after a month!
@Makulax3 жыл бұрын
So You actually replace the freewheel? Why not service it? I know it's a hassle with the millions of small bearings. And getting it right when assembling. I've done it, so can you.
@Makulax3 жыл бұрын
If I service a cassettewheel I just pull it all apart and rebuild it. Now I'm not saying replace spokes and shit. Just rebuild the hub and she's golden.

It was shot very nicely; lit well, good focus & editing, very well explained. But the first thing I noticed was the poor sound quality. However, I watched it & ignored that issue because the content was good & I could hear well enough. Perhaps a good mic is the next thing on his list. No need to be rude about it though, SEB could have made a polite suggestion.
