Comparing the WM200 (Tormek angle guide) with a controlled angle software setup.
Some resources for alternative calculators to the Knife Grinders one shown here:
Option 1: sharpeninghandbook.info/index...
Option 2: cockloftsoftware.wordpress.com
(Note there is some overlap on those two sites…).

Thank you for a clear demonstration of angle settings for Tormek, i too was starting to use Vadim’s sotware, unfortunately my iPad was destroyed and like you said I can’t find his apps anymore. I am trying to find alternative one without success so far. Can you help? Thanks

Thank you and I’m glad it was helpful. I’ve just updated the video description with a couple of links that you could use to multiple calculator options… Some are free and some are paid. I’ve not tested them out yet, but I know some of the sharpeners that created them and they are excellent. I originally had the grinding angle calculator on an ipad too, but some little fingers accidentally deleted it when I wasn’t watching ;) I was able to download a windows-based version from the KG website, but unfortunately his Apple/iOS version needed a special download code directly from Vadim, so cannot be purchased anymore.. Thanks for watching and good luck with your sharpening.

Please excuse my comment. I have a Tormec T8, and there is a shaft that restrains the rotation of the leather wheel. It is constantly clicking, and at the same time, the axis is repeatedly moving back and forth, and the vibration is transmitted to the entire body of the machine. I have asked the dealer and the manufacturer and they say it is within normal limits. Does your Tormek have similar symptoms?

Hello, I can’t quite picture what you mean, but I’ve just uploaded a basic video (Short) showing my T8 spinning freely. You can compare yours to that and let me know if you see/hear any differences.

I was able to buy the windows version from the KG site last year (after Vadim passed away), but I think iOS versions are permanently gone now. I originally had that, but was accidentally deleted when changing devices…. Unfortunately that means I need a tablet and a PC when I’m sharpening…

One thing that still puzzles me is that you use the same wheel for course and fine sharpening by re-profiling the wheel with the profiling stone. Doesn’t that excessively wears the wheel if keep changing it from course/fine multiple times a day ? What am I missing?
@greatedgeltd
@greatedgeltd 4 ай бұрын
Intuitively it would seem so, but in practice very little material is removed, and as long as you have a way to accurately measure wheel diameter you can use it for a long time. I would guess more knives than a CBN wheel but I don’t have data to support that.
@ToreDL87
@ToreDL87 Ай бұрын
One thing you could do is get two wheels, one for fine sharpening and one for course, simply swap between the two. Or even two Tormek's, one lower grade 100-200 dollar one used for course, and a new higher grade one for fine precision work.

If you don’t have the software, how do you determine the bar height?
@GFSwinger1693
@GFSwinger1693 6 ай бұрын
You do it the low technology way, just use the Tormek angle guage or if you are more interested in replication the existing grind angle of the knife you are sharpening, a felt marker. Unless you are a knife manufacturer and are advertising a specific grind angle the software is an overkill, and that comes from a very anal mechanical engineer.

I'm wondering if you or any of your viewers have used those notches on the angle finder to determine that correct angle on the targeted blade. Personally, I've found them absolutely useless. Perhaps I'm wrong?
@greatedgeltd
@greatedgeltd 10 ай бұрын
I personally don’t find it very useful because the knife can normally wobble around inside so it’s not very clear. You can use it as a starting point, but not for a definitive edge angle determination.

In theory, yes, but they are tricky with a tormek because you aren’t resting the knife on a flat (horizontal surface)…

This method, devised by Vadim is just FAR too intricate and complicated for the average blade sharpener. One could also use the notched angle guide atop the Angle Master to determine and set the grind angle accordingly. Shouldn't one know the original bevel of the blade as set by the factory, if new before arbitrarily selecting a suggested angle ie. 16° for European style knives and 15° for Japanese style knives? I recently sharpened several Wenger chefs knives and found their original ground angle to be 20° per side and ground accordingly. They were extremely sharp with very little metal removed. Why then would I change that original factory set angle to something else? Plus, how does this highly technical angle measurement sharpening method lend itself to "put through" of sharpening customer blades in a timely manner? In one of his last videos, Vadim had abandoned his multiple Tormek machines for precision, high speed bench grinders with superb buffing wheels. A knife could be sharpened in 2 minutes & 17 seconds. So, is Vadim a Guru of the knife sharpening business? No, he made his reputation and KZfaq money starting with Tormek grinders then moved on to the REAL MONEY, Commercial Sharpening! Unfortunately, you too seem to have fallen into the Vadim discipleship. Sharpening is a basic procedure. Been around for thousands of years. Get the blade sharp to serve its intended purpose. 🍁🦒
