How to set High Pass Filter Settings for Ported Subs - MiniDSP 2x4HD - Full Tutorial. In this video we learn how to set a high pass filter at 20hz on a miniDSP 2x4HD. You need to set this so that you don't destroy your ported sub by pushing it too hard below its tuning frequency. This is very useful for DIY (Do It Yourself) subwoofers, especially Marty, mini-marty, marty cube, GSG subs, etc. All passive ported (vented) subwoofers should have a high pass filter to protect the driver.

Hey Jiles thanks for pointing me towards this video. Basically what I took away from it: If I build my own sub, and put some bucks into it I should learn a lot more about mini DSP, so I don't destroy my new creation! Very interesting video!

Thanks! Any ported sub needs a subsonic filter. It comes built in to most consumer units.

well first off you do the ported subwoofer SSF calculation of box tuning divide by 4 then what you get from that is then minus the box tuning which then gives you the answer for your SSF well HPF ..you don't set a HPF immediately below the tuning of your ported box tuning thats just loosing a lot of bass extension unnecessarily ..so for example..say ported subwoofer is tuned to 25hz right..25hz divide by 4 = 6.25 now 6.25 - 25 = 18.75 so basically 19hz ..now thats where you want the roll off the start..at either 19 or 20hz to be safe but if you can be very precise go on and do 18.75hz ..thats the proper way to set a HPF for ported subs...you don't want them to roll off far too early...thats just ....loosing what you can still be gaining from it

Which miniDSP model would you recommend to use only for a single subwoofer? Would the standard work or would I need the HD version?

Hi...I just saw this video and was wondering if you could possibly help me with my situation. I have a dedicated HT room with 2 existing subs ( Paradigm PDR12 and PDR10 ). I recently bought a SVS PB-1000 and was hoping to be able to integrate it to the 2 PDR's. I have the miniDSP 2X4HD. Will it help and how do I do it? I'm a bit of a noob so would appreciate your help. I know these are mismatched subs but was really hoping I could make it work.

Yes thanks for sharing your video. I have the non HD version one of mini DSP 2x4. my plugin is 2x4 advanced. I only use it for my two ported subs and the plugin looks identical to yours but I have mine high lighted on the top, the routing area. So one in and two out as a mono signal. Now low pass I have that set at 25 HZ and high 80 HZ. the meters are set at -10 to keep away from the red to avoid distortion. Can you put the low number on the high pass or low pass ? I hear the drivers going but not enough . When I default back on my AVRS Crossover at the sub out I really feel them . I am doing something wrong. My drivers were bought seperatly so I have a external amp running them with the cabinet I have them in.

Those xover settings will cut out all the bass from 25 - 80 HZ.

@@JilesMcCoy Yes Hi so the drivers frequency response is 19 to 1000 Hz Should I up the low pass higher than 25 to 80 Hz and highpass at a higher no? and bypass the low cutoff and keep the high cutoff enabled ? sincere Andrew

@@404010ful usually you will use the low pass filter in your avr. Commonly people cross over at 80ish. So a low pass at 80 to knock out the highs. Then if you have ported boxes you would do a high pass filter at 18/19/20 ish.

@@404010ful the high pass filter is just to protect ported boxes under port tuning. So set that somewhere at the port tuning frequency. The low pass filter will be handled by your avr or processor.

how to determine the right filter? I see GSG has a recommendation, but isn't that driver dependent? they have a 12db recommendation but why not 24 particularly at these sub 20hrz frequencies?

The filter depends on the tuning of the enclosure... so you should match to that.

As for the slope you want to retain as much response as possible but still protect the woofer from damage. 24 would sacrifice more low end without any additional effective protection.
