Why is it so important?
Before you install your truck and transmission
watch this instructional video we took at Forsyth Technical College in Winston Salem NC, with longtime NASCAR engine builder Brian Hambly.
The engine in the video is a SBC Small Block Chevy, but the process is the same for any engine you may be working on.

Thank you for making this video. This is something that needs to be checked any time a new bearing/bushing is installed or even when installing a different transmission of the same type. The input shaft length could vary ever so slightly from trans to trans because of production tolerances. This is one reason I love your channel so much!

Ran into this when I built my 67 ss 396 4 speed chevelle. Was just a kid and had an aftermarket scatter shield. Got a vibration in the driveline after a couple months of driving. Noticed that I could change the vibration by releasing and engaging the clutch. Pulled it apart and found the trans input was barely in the pilot bushing and was "flopping around" . New pilot to the correct depth and was all good. Been 50 years ago.

Well, I just learned something important that I absolutely did not know. I'll need to re-watch this video a few times and do some reading before I install the flywheel and new clutch assembly on that beautiful engine you built for me, Allan. The last thing I want is to screw this up and make a mess of the engine. Thanks a ton for this video.

That’s the hard way to do it. When my trans & engine are out like yours are, I do a test fit with modeling clay and no bearing.

AG, some people seem to have a lot of trouble with building engines or other mechanical parts like the trans. bushings in the crankshaft. Some people just don't know much about stick shift transmissions, clutches etc...

Something tells me some people find trouble where they build the short block first, than go looking for a transmission? I think I might like this bushing installed before balancing.

I doubt that a pretty much concentric bushing in the center of that shaft would have any measurable effect on the balance of the engine.

@@jeffreydurham5342 Its a fair observation as far as location of mass goes, but I would want to know - bushing mass effectively acts as part of the crank once installed. Mainly, my thinking was if it gets pressed in after initial mock up/measurements then depth is easier to contol & set. As a bonus, less chance of mushrooming and nobody's wailing on a crank with a shop hammer, and thrust bearings don't begin life with an insult.

@@flinch622 so you're going to put the crankshaft in the block, and measure how far the pilot bushing needs to be by assembling the transmission and bellhousing together and measuring before balancing?

Good reminder to check your input shaft to bush/bearing clearance, but not the best explanation of how to measure and less than ideal execution. Anyway, I think we can all learn something from this.

Why is the installer not using a bushing driver? Kind of shade tree for a shop to be doing.

I thought it was sketch that he was hitting that input shaft with a hammer, kinda dangerous in my opinion. I would have been good with smacking it in with an appropriately sized socket!

Manual, a pilot bearing is not required for an automatic transmission. AG
