what is the difference between this and XTR-143 270?

Both of these awnings have the same features and benefits. The difference is the amount of coverage you get between the two. The XTR-143 will provide more coverage than the XTR-71.

So would the XT not be the same thing if you didn’t drop the legs?? Thanks.

The XT awning requires you to use the legs for support.The bracket provided with the XT awning isn't designed to hold the weight of the awning like the XTR brackets are.

When should you deploy the legs what’s too much wind to keep it free standing?

If you notice the awning catching wind from underneath, we'd recommend dropping the legs and pinning it to the ground with the included guy lines and stakes.
