I used part of three pairs of recycled jeans for this bag, with approx. 40" x 13" lining fabric. Add pockets and closures if you like!Fabric slashing is a fun way to add texture to your projects, this technique can also be used for home dec projects like cushion covers.
I'll also give you some ideas an inspiration for recycled denim and cork projects, there will be more tutorials to follow!
The yellow fabric is from The Craft Cotton Company.

Great tutorial Debbie. I bought two pairs of denims from the Heart Foundation and made bags so win win on both counts with the money going to charity. One I made using fabric scraps so it ended up a patchwork effect. I then cut off one of the pockets to make a feature on one side. Love recycling 🤗🤗

I think I'll give this a go, looks SO clever, yet so easy to achieve! I thought at first you had individually sewn on layers of suspended diamonds within empty squares... Like the criss cross sandwiches made for rag quilts, i thought it was mini ones of those stitched within square apertures! 😂 But, i will cut my layers and THEN attach my background fabric layer i think, cos i just know I'll end up cutting through the whole lot knowing me! I'll use a seam ripper, cos i dropped my fabric scissors nose tip down on the floor, and whilst still sharp, the end points do not nip into fabric anymore as they are not tightly overlapping! So they're useless for "snipping" accurately, they cut fine down the length of the blades, but not 1" at the ends! So seam ripper it'll be! 😘😘😘

I don’t know what the proper name for this is but I call it peek a boo quilting. You can clip the points of the triangles off gradually from the centre for a different effect. Possibilities are endless.

Hi Debbie. Thanks for the great bag project. Something that could make it easier to cut the squares up with would be to remove the backing denim before sewing, pin other layers and puncture the center of each square with an awl. Then you can now cut into each square when sewn, the three top layers all at once. Cheers.

Hi Debbie, I really liked the book cover you showed (made by Lesley Tawton). I was wondering if this might be made into a future tutorial, as I think that it would make a great gift. I have just started to sew and think this would be a good beginner project. I also love the idea that I can use what fabrics I have to hand. Many thanks for your tutorials they have really helped and encourage me. 💜🌸🙂

I made this bag on the weekend. I had so much fun, it took me quite a while as I added a recessed zipper & an open pocket & zipper pocket to the lining. Just in time for the Christmas Party at my dealers. The theme for the day is to bring something you have repurposed, so Thank you Debbie it was the perfect project for me. Do you have a web site where I can upload my bag photo?

Hello Debbie if we make this bag in complete cotton fabric will the cuts not make the fabric fray a lot ?? Also will it be strong enough to make with a cotton fabric ?
@debbieshore
@debbieshore 4 жыл бұрын
Cutting fabric on the bias means it doesn't fray, it just goes fluffy, and for a cotton bag I'd use a stabiliser, maybe fusible fleece to strengthen it and give it a bit of form.

Do you think this would work just as well with felted wool???
@debbieshore
@debbieshore 4 жыл бұрын
Felt wouldn't fray, but it would work if you cut the cross into different sizes to expose the layers...
