Michele, one reason your drawing videos are so popular is you tell the truth while other teachers keep these little secrets to themselves, at least in my part of US. Had many drawing classes and this was never taught in any of them,neither in school or professional setting. May God richly bless you for teaching all the skills needed for drawing and painting.

A few things: In my humble opinion,pencil drawing is one of the most challenging,even more so than watercolor,which is ,at least,perceived as the most challenging. But that balance of black and white,and the many greys in between,it is indeed tricky! I’m so glad that you mentioned the cotton bud(Qtip)! Not only can you remove some of the cotton,to make a finer,yet still soft blending tool,but the sick(depending on the brand) is a tiny rolled paper blender! Sharpen it ,and you’ve got the tiniest rolled paper blender,just fantastic! The pencil blender,the one that you weren’t sure what it’s made of,I think that it’s linoleum,I could be wrong,but I’ve done my share of linoleum cut prints,and it has the same feel. Thank you for these videos,I just turned 52,and I am happy to still be learning 😊

I thought the pencil grading information was useful :) I learned about shading a long time ago, exactly as Michele teaches. Tip: powdered graphite sold as a key lock lubricant in your local hardware store is a fun way to make a huge mess! Use the powder as an additive to your drawing and burnish it in with the tools of your choice. Don’t forget to let the powder get all over your clothes and on your face. It shows how dedicated you are :)

I found your channel through searches for drawing techniques, but I am inspired to retry watercolor. I have tried it in the past, and I was always disappointed, but by watching your videos, I have seen that I was making all those beginner mistakes you talk about. Now that I've seen your videos, I'm going to try it again! Thank you so much for everything you do. You are very much appreciated! I watch every video you release. ~ Lisa

For blending, I use a self-made blending stump by rolling up a piece of scrap paper. A problem is that the tip goes blunt so I have to snip it off and and roll it up again, but at least it's cheap. On occasion, I use a 2H pencil for very light or wispy parts of a drawing.

Thank you for making this video. I learned a few techniques I wasn't aware of and one tool I had I didn't know what it was for...the one with the tip made of rubber or silicone . Also going to remove my pencil other than the H, as I do find that one leaves a very light mark that at times I find useful. I'm going to go check your other videos to see if you've done one on drawing eyes.

Such a helpful video Michele! I have had a set of graphite pencils, but I have not tried them because I didn't know what to do with them. Thank you so much. I did have one question though. Does the Derwent Blending pencil actually lay down graphite or does it just smudge around the graphite you have already on the paper? Can that pencil be used on colored pencil drawings with the same effect? I guess that's two questions!

I love to draw and shade, and am always looking at ways to improve as well as play with the materials. In the paper comparison at the beginning of the video, you talked about sketch paper, printer paper, and the 3 kinds of watercolor paper. Where does "Mixed Media" paper fall into this list? I use a lot of mixed media paper for lots of reasons, including price and the weight balance between sketch paper and watercolor paper. I like to add color, but usually do not do a really wet wash.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Жыл бұрын
Hard to say as mixed media paper varies greatly, some of it can have quite a strong fake texture, but take it as you find it, if you like the results then all is good!

One point- the camera focus in the video is quite soft/blurry. After taking a peek to compare against a couple of your previous videos, it seems to be just on this video. Not sure what the problem is- subject too close to the lens, lens is dirty, AF is bad in the camera you are using. Just thought I would mention it. Thanks again for the video.
