Ben takes take you step by step through the process of sharpening the gouge in the first part of this four part series that includes the gouge, the flat chisel, the skew chisel, and the spindle gouge. The gouge is the main starting chisel for green woodwork, used for roughing out and removing material. Putting a sharp edge on this tool will help achieve best results when turning.
In this series Ben uses a Tormek T4 Bushcraft Edition Grinder, Japanese Combination Waterstones, Japanese Slip Stones, Paddle Strop, the Orford Carving Tool Sharpening Set, Tormek paste and Camelia Oil. He also offers you options if you cannot access a Grinder (including Diamond Stones or Regrinding services). Ben then shows you the basic use of each chisel for turning on a lathe.

Honing is very satisfying to my ears when i do it. & then i love hearing the slight noise we get when we use very sharp to0ls on our w0od projects. I do not have them to0ls you have but i always manage to get a nice edge on each of them.

Thank you, Ben for showing how you sharpen your pole lathe chisels. I would have liked to see a comparison of turning before and after sharpening to get a comparison of what to expect. The Setup you have is quite advanced, someone starting out or on a limited budget will hardly be able to justify buying a Tormek. You mention bench stones as an alternative, but not how that would be done. It looks like the final demonstration was with a different chisel than the one you actually sharpened, though I suppose it doesn't make a big difference when both are sharpened the same way. I'm looking forward to watching the other parts of the series.

Can you suggest which Tormick grinder to purchase?

No problem well I had a T7 super grind for about 20 years but the new T8 is amazing. If you can afford the larger grinder the larger diameter wheel is a an advantage but if not the the T4 will be great just a little slower at removing larger amounts of steel. Hope that helps cheers Ben

Great video, what is the difference between wood turning and carving chisel gouges? you touched on this in your video. I ordered some A.Iles chisels, for simple texturing of wooden trays, but two of the three I ordered are long and heavy 300mm/11.3/4" in total. They were under wood carving section but I feel those should be used for carving a real size bear rather than small tea tray. Can you advise? Thanks

Hi Lucy no problem well often if they are for woodcarving they are often geared up for hitting with a mallet. You might want to get what they call palm carving tools they are more hand held type of tools for your finer carving. Hope that helps. cheers Ben

1. Chisels are flat, gouges are curved. There's no such thing as a chisel gouge. 2. Wood turning tools typically have much longer handles than woodcarving tools. The longer handles provide leverage against the item being carved on the lathe. 3. Iles woodcarving tools are known for being particularly long - but the handles are normal length. Compare yours to Iles woodturning tools, you'll see the handles are much longer.

Can anyone suggest why my effort left me with a rounded end? (I mean rounded off where it should be square at the end).

I should imagine if you have ground off the square corner of your gouge it mean you and pivoting the chisel left and right on the wheel and not keeping the edge square to the wheel at all times. Personally I do this on purpose and don’t like the sharp corners on the gouge for turning. But if you do what them for carving ensure you keep the edge of the tool parallel or square to the surface of the wheel. Hope that helps cheers Ben
