This is an in-depth guide I made on how to re-shim your worn R200 Viscous LSD out of your Nissan Silvia or Skyline. With only a small cost to purchase some shims and some patience this is a great option for enthusiasts who want to drift on a budget.
The shims can be ordered through your Nissan parts dealer or from a few online stores.
The Nissan parts numbers for the shims are:
0.80mm = 3842440F60
0.85mm = 3842440F62
0.90mm = 3842440F63
1.01mm = 3842440F67
1.05mm = 3842440F68
1.10mm = 3842440F70
1.20mm = 3842440F73
1.30mm = 3842440F76
1.40mm = 3842440F80
1.49mm = 3842440F83
I hope this helps :) -Joe Yates

If your having trouble putting it back in, you can put the casing on a press and light enough pressure on other axis will open it enough to slide in the diff assembly

If you need any help, shoot me a message. Nismo are like the best for street for a 2 way as well so you have a great one already then. It would be interesting to know what diff ratio you are running, it will be printed on the crown wheel/ring gear 🙂

Great video! I have seen numerous posts and videos suggesting that the extra shim washer go on the other side of the VLSD unit (closer to the ring gear). Have you tried that? Do you reckon it matters which side it goes on? I have followed your instructions for my '88 Nissan Z31 VLSD but wonder if I should move the shim to the other side before reassembling...
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters too much which side it goes on but good rule of thumb is to replace the existing one in the same location but with more thickness. Or if the shim is in good condition you can add 1 x smaller one as an extra. I replaced mine with slightly thicker ones and then added an extra for good measure. Sorry about the late reply, hope you got it sorted in the end 🙂✌

@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the splines on the stub axles are a different count, so they won't mate and fit together. You would need an r33 gtst long nose ABS diff with 5 bolt stub axles and driveshafts to match.

What is the reason for new shimms? Will it lock up better after installing new ones?
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 3 жыл бұрын
The new shims replaced 1x badly worn out shim. Also adding another in adds to increase how much the l.s.d is locked. Every viscous r200 lsd is different, you may need one thicker, and or an extra shim. I have 3 x in mine. Depends on what's already there and how much the shims have worn. Its sometimes a little trial and error. I added in one extra shim and replaced the worn shim with one a little thicker. You can get the shims in different thickness sizes. Hope this helps :)

I did as you at 1:50, the axle came ou/looset but not all the way. The Last bit of haft Still stuck in the diff
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 3 жыл бұрын
Try carefully hitting it harder, they are usually stuck in pretty hard. If it's come out a bit, you're nearly there. The only risk now is maybe breaking the circuit that it's catching on. Usually the c clip is fine and you can reuse although workshop manuals usually say to replace it. Try hitting it harder at different points on the stub axle flange. You're nearly there! Hope that helps.

If mine has a bit of in and out movement on one side of the stub axles. What does that mean? Or what can I do to fix it?
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 3 жыл бұрын
A little bit is ok, this is normal from what I am aware. There will be a little bit of movement until the C clip stops the stub axle/shaft from coming out. Nothing to be too concerned about unless of course you can pull it right out!

It's fine man. Once the hub nut is fastened at the hub/brake disk, the driveshaft won't move much at all at the diff. Mine was also like this. I'd consider this to be normal.

Hey mate, what’s the max amount of shim you can run/fit? (In millimetres)
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 2 жыл бұрын
I've not tried more than 1.2mm approx. Id say about maximum 2mm extra thickness. That will be locked hard. It's a bit of trial and error, I've had great sucess just adding 1mm of extra.
@Jahoo89
@Jahoo89 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, how many of each shim? or is your description what you actually used?
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how worn the original ones in your diff are, also I'd say replace them if they look badly worn with the same thickness then add about 1mm of shim. It's something you kind of have to experiment with. Increasing the current total thickness will increase tightness, I'd say increase the thickness by about 1mm, so add 1mm of shim or thereabouts. What I did in the video is exactly what I did and it lasted a long time, many drift events.

Does this work for 350z vlsds ?
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 3 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine the principal will be the same. The part numbers for the shims might be different. However you could try replacing the oil if its been in there a while with some high quality VLSD oil to hopefully restore its binding/locking up abilities. Other than that, from what I gather alot of people who own them for drifting will weld the centre together. This depends essentially on what your needs are for the diff. Hope this helps somewhat. The Nissan Fast online catalogue might help in regard to the part numbers for the shims :)

Hey Doug, The shim sizes and Nissan parts numbers are below. I added x 1 extra shim and replaced the worn shim which was about 0.75mm with another new shim.) The size I used was the 1.01mm shim x 2. Hope this helps :) 0.80mm = 3842440F60 0.85mm = 3842440F62 0.90mm = 3842440F63 1.01mm = 3842440F67 1.05mm = 3842440F68 1.10mm = 3842440F70 1.20mm = 3842440F73 1.30mm = 3842440F76 1.40mm = 3842440F80 1.49mm = 3842440F83

What was the point of re shimming the diff again?
@JoeYates77
@JoeYates77 3 жыл бұрын
To make the centre essentially locked without welding it. This diff I installed is an R33 R200 with stronger 5 bolt flanges and driveshafts. It originally has a Viscous Coupling Type (VLSD) centre which has a shim either side of the internal coupling and works off friction by movement of the shims against the coupling. When the oil heats up from movement it binds. Shimming the diff centre by adding an extra shim or replacing the worn shims effectively locks it and or makes it tight. Its essentially a cheaper alternative to sourcing and installing a mechanical clutch type LSD. How locked you want it is up to how thick and how many shims you install. Usually you might just say, remove the worn shims and replace them adding one extra. It's a great option if you don't want to weld the centre but main key point is that it's a budget/cheaper option compared to say a good mechanical clutch type LSD centre. Hope this helps :)
