How to Shoot and process star trail photos

Күн бұрынLearn how to properly shoot and process star trail photographs using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. In this video I will discuss all of the required gear that you will need to produce high quality astro photographs. (Gear links below) I will then give a detailed explanation on how to program your intervalometer. Then I will discuss the camera settings that you will need in order to achieve a proper exposure for the night sky with and without a moon. Next, I will explain how to obtain proper focus in the dark and how to find the north star without an app. Lastly I will demonstrate some post processing techniques using Lightroom and Photoshop so you can get the most out of your shots.

-------------------------------------------- STARTRAIL SHOOTING CHECKLIST. --------------------------------------------
• Plug in your intervalometer before mounting your camera on the tripod.
• Make sure your shooting in RAW
• Make sure your battery is 100% charged.
• Make sure there is enough room on your memory card to shoot for your planned duration of time.
• Remove all PL and ND filters
• Set lens to manual focus
• Turn image stabilization off on lens and in camera if equipped
• Turn of "Long Exposure Noise Reduction" AKA Long Expo NR
• Check your camera mode: Bulb for startrils and Manual for focusing and pinpoints
• Set the White Balance to your preference. I often shoot tungsten for no moon and 4,200 for full moon.
• Program your intervalometer
• Focus on a bright star
• Enjoy the night sky!

Awesome video, I've been wanting to do a star trail shot for quite some time. Question on the light painting shots. What were the exposure settings for those shots, and did you go back to auto focus, or adjust your focus onto what you were light painting?

Hi there, I’m currently traveling so I do not have access to that particular set of images. But I can tell you that I typically will lower the ISO and often times close the Aperture a bit as long as I can get enough light for a hood exposure. My exposure time is typical 20-30 seconds which gives me a bit of time to move around. The images I. The video were light painted with a flash set to full power I believe. I usually use a night flashlight though. Changing the focus or even the Aperture can present some dark halo problems. Especially the changing of focus since the elements in the lens shift. If you change focus you will very likely get dark halos when combining the shots. It’s not the end of the world if you have pretty good Photoshop skills, but it requires some pretty intense masking techniques and duplicating the image a number of times. That being said, I often times do focus on my foreground and deal with the editing mess later on, but be prepared for some post processing work. As long as you’re far enough from your subject like I was in that video, you don’t really need to worry about it but if you’re close, you might need to focus on the subject and the star separately
