How To Shoot Like Elias Pettersson
Here's what shooting coaches don't teach you. This new shot is possible with new sticks. It's not surprise the the younger players in the league shoot this way. And it's possible to learn at any age. Elias Pettersson is a shining example of a player who has taken the Slingshot to the extreme. And we can learn more from what he DOESN'T do than what he does do.

Love this video! I'm no fan of the weight transfer / push down technique. I teach my kids It's all about speed, pulling the top hand and pushing the bottom hand, but the top hand pulls up and out then whips back in toward the body using you stick like a lever as the bottom hand pushes forward. Focusing on the hands needing to be away from the body takes away from the dynamics of the shot, but having a few drills where kids shoot with their hands out is a bit of a reset practice for me. Often when I get shooting I focus on pulling with the top hand and rotating...but I often lose the right timing to use my stick as a lever...from a static position with your hands out and just pulling back on your top hand (using the stick like a lever) is such an easy way to move the blade of your stick really fast.

This looks a little like he’s taken some inspiration from floorball, a sport that is quite big in Sweden and Finland. It’s sort of like floor hockey but with a very light ball instead of a puck and the sticks are extremely light

I've played hockey my hole life and I understand what grabbing the stick in different areas does to a variety of shot styles. Gretzky was shooting similar to Pettersson back in the day with wooden sticks that still flex enough to make that shot style work. Weight transferring is how the body gets energy to the stick so its able to move the puck faster. Rotating the hips is doing just that. It's basic physics. The composite more flexible sticks help but all players have them now but Pettersson is just smarter, he will get a shot off faster without much weight transfer or the need for a ton of speed when in front of the net. Holding the stick higher is gives him less power but faster release and it's the hockey sense and quicker release that give him the edge. He still does a lot of slap shots and there is a lot of weight transfer in that shot.

Interesting video. Im a shooting instructor myself and i agree and disagree with some points. I completely agree with the wight transfer vs say hip rotation. so important to have your hips end up facing your target. I do think weight transfer is in effect but not as much as it has been made out to be. The thing I do kinda disagree with is the whole "Not getting the hands up and out in front of the body" I feel this is huge for that quick release and minimal weight transfer. If you don't get the hands up and out you will have a harder time cracking that top hand back to get that fast release no? Some of your examples do have him with that upper hand tucked in be I feel like those sots were more one timer style shots using more the weight and the momentum of the puck to load the stick. Regardless Elias Pettersson has one unquiet shooting style! defiantly using the technology to his advantage! the guy weights like 165lbs uses an 85 flex stick and can still bang out 99.4MPH slap shots! love the vides! keep them coming!

Not that I am a shooting coach or a science whiz, but I'd assume that within this shooting technique having hands in closer will let your torso (assuming your core and rotational strength is stronger than your arms) do more work pulling the butt-end of the stick backwards with you and letting your bottom hand guide the middle kick point forward also aiming where you would prefer your shot to go. Having your hands out would only be creating more work for yourself and making your shot more inefficient?
@BenYorkeMrHardtail
@BenYorkeMrHardtail 5 жыл бұрын
@@twogoobs2043 In terms of having the hands in tighter and using your core and rotational strength to shoot I think is a great way to get power out of your shot. But in terms of quick release I find having your hands up and out allows you to put yourself in a better shooting position quicker because your able to move around the puck and with todays sticks and technology you can use very quick and short movements with the top hand to release the puck hard and quick. In todays hockey where time and space is minimal I find this to work great. I still think he gets his hands out. Go to 3:29 of the video right where he says "DONT" get your hands up. go frame by frame on that shot. top hand comes up and out and there in minimal body rotation. this makes it quite hard to read where he is going to put the puck. but on a side note you can see on this shot what he was saying about weight transfer is true! meaning it's not as much of a factor as it's been made out to be. Im by no means saying he's wrong about Elias shooting style. In the end its comes down to a time and place to use a certain style of shot. There is hundreds of ways to shot the puck. And hundreds of scenarios to use different shooting styles.

The main thing thing here is ergodicity. Meaning that there is path dependence of the hands. Coaches often state that you must have your hands out and that's that. And then I see poor players skating around with their hands out all day, wondering why their shot and other mechanics sick. Your hands move up and away from the body during most shots - but there is a timing to do. So hands up and away isn't the rule. But it is often demonstrated.

I don't know shit about hockey but logically holding hands closer together and spin them around each other should make the movement quicker and if the hands are higher up it gives the stick better length to flex and generate power along with speed... I suppose.

@benbrousseau5160
@benbrousseau5160 5 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb is your flex should be half of your body weight. I don't know how long you've been playing hockey or if you're just getting started but you might want to go for a higher or lower flex depending on your playing style and where you shoot from. A stick with a lower flex will require less effort to flex and thus get power however will not offer as much power as a higher flex stick which will require more effort to flex but will result more oomph in your shot(Your shot should be stronger). If you're someone who takes big slap shots and has time to wind up for heavy wrist shots i would recommend going to a flex that is a bit higher than half of your weight but if you like to get close to the net and go right through other players you might want a lower flex stick as you will have little to no time to wind up.

This is not a new way of shooting, he is shooting with his hips open to the net or goal line where as the classic slap shot and wrister use a closed hip formation, parallel to the side boards. This shot is analogous to the "Off Foot" or "Back Foot" "Snapper" developed in the late 80's and 90's. Down wards pressure is generated by having the puck back and in tight to the body, near or behind the back foot. And by dropping the shoulder, the pressure is applied later in the range of motion and is timed with the weight transfer to the inside or "back foot". These combined forces initiate the fulcrum lever action of the stick and hands. The end result is a shot with a shorter applied impulse than the classic wrister or slap shot. Peterson has adopted this style of shooting efficiency because the stick flexion is generated by body weight rather than the strength of his upper body. But of more importance, shooting with "Open Hips" allows the shooter to face the net through the whole shot sequence, allowing the shooter to analyze the goaltenders movements and pick and opening or to make a shot pass to a player in the slot. There's no doubt that modern stick design has enhanced and developed this shooting style. I remember when I was a kid, only a few guys had the strength for a hard top shelf shot but now days there all snipers.

Dangerous comments about not getting top hand out, that is the biggest deficiency youth players have in regards to puck handling and shooting. Top hand mobility is a pre-requisite to so many things, it’s the “walk” between crawling and running. I understand you’re tying to be unique but please consider the youth players and coaches when making these statements is all.
@Train2point0
@Train2point0 5 жыл бұрын
No. I'm not trying to be unique. Just correct. Unfortunately, you're not.
4 жыл бұрын
Well I think you have to admit that Videos & related analysis not always tell‘s the truth. Or otherwise put what you derive from it. This shooting style is definitely special but in this sequence he is also dragging a bit the puck to not reveal if he is preparing to shoot or intending to pass. This definitely works. But as a „general rule“ top mobility is still extremely important to all quick release type of shots. As is arm movement to stride / acceleration.

Why do North Americans need these silly names for things? “SPINORAMAAAA” in this video “we call this the power tunnel” 🤔
@jasonrekker4328
@jasonrekker4328 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you're criticizing. "Spinorama" is supposed to be a bit silly, with the "orama" suffix being ironic in its overemphasis. It's meant to be a bit playful. "Power tunnel" I have never heard of but is just a way to refer to a particular set of body positions in a common language that avoids having to explain it every time. Sometimes the terms use exagerrated or memorable terminology in order to make them more memorable. A more cynical interpretation might be that they are invented to help sports scientists market their craft.
