The bit at 8:28 about using the same device and adjusting the sidechain amount independently is mind blowing. Awesome video.

Just a follow up to this based on some comments I had elsewhere! - There are other means of getting the kick out to side chain inputs, but I like the Send 8 method as I can run any other kicks in my project to it at any point (so if I have a different kick in the verse for example, I can still use all my existing SC routing) - I didn't do a very good job of demonstrating it in this vid but the phase-cancelling sidechainer *will* follow any kick pattern. I just so happened to be using a 4 on the floor beat here, but when used with a gate output you can of course use any kick pattern you like - If you want to follow kicks from a VST or instrument without gate output and don't want to program the MIDI in manually, you can do the following; - Put your VST into a combinator - Put a Thor in the combinator (shift drag to prevent audio connections) - Disable OSC and filter - Route MIDI Gate to CV out 1 - In Combinator programmer, limit note range of Thor to wherever your kick is - Then hook up the gate (CV out 1) to the input of the sidechainer as in this video - I have also included a button to enable basic 4 on the floor auto pumping in the combinator, just using a Drumsequencer Player. You could fill the 8 patterns with different SC patterns and automate them!

Awesome. Thank you. This method seems way more precise and adaptable. You have a real gift for clearly and cleanly presenting this type of stuff. Subbed.

I guess Reason Studio is the most convinient DAW for educators of sound engineering to literally be able to show how to do wiring stuff between different devices as they are in a real music studio with analogue gear.

The need to use, and possibly even chain spiders all the time for this kind purpose, is the one most "outdated feeling"-thing in Reason. :)
@PaulOrtiz
@PaulOrtiz Жыл бұрын
Yeah I have long wished that we could use a modifier or a long press or something to open up a built in splitter (kind of like how Voltage Modular works). That said, there'd still maybe be times where I'd want to use Spider. But agree, it'd be nice not to have to!
@janis679

@@PaulOrtiz I think @reasonstudios should have made a decision to add a Live/Bitwig-type of solution for sidechaining-inputs in devices. Fully internal invisible trigger from chosen device, just the dropdown menu and no restrictions / need for building any unnecessary spidernests. You could still also use it the Reason-way, for more advanced stuff etc. 🙂

If anyone wants to know THE absolute quickest, easiest way to use a high pass filter side chain detecter for the reason master bus compressor, here's how to do it, with zero audio degradation quality or any potential issues that the control room out method has. Put the master stereo imager as the first thing in your master bus FX inserts. This will NOT affect the sound in any way other than trigger the master compressor, as you will soon see. Insert the rack master bus plugin next, instead of using the one on the mixing board. Algorithm is identical plus you get wet/dry, huge bonus there. If you have been inserting plugins as normal from the left browser or right click and browse insert, they should have auto cabled. Leave the cabling as it, like a normal FX chain. Press tab and on the back of the stereo imager you will see a secondary out and a slider, make SURE it is set to hi band. Take that secondary hi band output into the sidechain input of the master bus compressor. Leave everything at default in the imager plugin, press the sidechain button on the front of the compressor, now the crossover dial on the stereo imager will act as a high pass detection trigger for the master bus compressor. It works flawlessly and is SO easy and you get that delicious wet/dry knob that you don't get on the master buss comp on the main mixer. You can add as many effects as you like in the master bus insert chain, before or after the stereo imager/master bus compressor combo, just like you normally would, and just keep the stereo imager connected normally in the chain so audio can pass through to other effects. You see, it won't affect the main audio at all as the secondary out takes over, and all that out is doing is acting as a frequency detector for the compressor. This can work for any compressor by the way with a side chain input, if that compressor does not have an internal EQ sidechain of its own already. It just works, and really, really well. The master bus compressor sounds amazing now on hard transient material, with gain reduction no longer dominated by the kick drum. In trance I usually have it anywhere from 250 to 400hz, but, as with anything, YMMV. Hope this helped, as it's much more convoluted setting it up with the master compressor on the mixer, and then you have to do a second convoluted setup to add a wet/dry as well. I know it looks neat on the mixing desk, but it's just not worth it when the rack plugin is more flexible and easier to use.

The inverted audio signal sidechain trick is cool. Did you found a solution, when you are using audio latency causing effects or instruments? Delay compensation is currently pretty limited in Reason 12. CV and MIDI will currently not be compensated.

I hate to ask this since you have done so much with this tutorial already and it really is fantastic, but is there any way you can show us a way to do this without the sweeper? basically using one of the synths envelope generators instead. Maybe Europa since it has a similar visual representation? The reason i ask is I'm using Reason Lite and can't really justify paying for plus or upgrading at this time.

2:08 This method is using the Dynamics section on the Channel Strip to control the amount of ducking applied. But how can that work if you're already using the Dynamics section on the Channel Strip for, well, the dynamics of that channel? What do you do then?

Then you put a compressor or gate in the rack. But it's true, I like to reserve the whole mixer for well, mixing and fine tuning. Everything else I dump in the rack.

If your making 4 4 rhythm s you can use the free plugin in in the reason store called PUMP. however any beats that doesn't fall under that sidechaining needs more freedom. Beautifully described here. However long winded. I say this because it implies that your template starts with drums. As opposed to starting from anywhere else melody harmony samples etc. This side chain issue i. The reason workflow has in my own process made me abandon the technique altogether. Yet i still, especially after going on a fourtet binge think about using and look for ways of making it seamless in workflow. Luckily there are good secrets here and a concise description. As i also use ableton. It is dead easy in ableton. Help me help reason make this as easy as it should be. In all reality even though we work in the box. It would be faster side chaining in hardware. Which i thought software would eliminate. Just thought. Happy shredding. Reason gang. Lol

@TikTokOwnsU 0 seconds ago lol ableton users always show up still trying to cope with the gnarly UI. it may be easier in ableton but do you have the same amount of control as method 2?

It's a flow state type thing. A painter might want to stretch their canvas and frame it before they start painting. Or just start painting. Creative flow vs an engineering mindset. I feel you. I just don't side chain in reason . There are many other ways to create this effect. Reason since 2.5. Gang gang. It's also a live thing. Using reason in a live context like a modular rack. The least devices the better in my experience. I've yet to see many if any do live sets with reason as I'm describing. To busy to start a KZfaq channel myself but I might. Stay up.
