I learned by imitating a lot of different genre artists that I like. It’s helped me with my vocal range a bit although I need to improve on higher pitched notes because a few songs that I like are higher pitched but I don’t wanna make my voice sound like my balls are up in my stomach like Stan smith in the episode of American dad when he joins roger and Hayley’s Russian band 😂😂😂. (I honestly didn’t expect to get this many likes on my comment but I appreciate you guys finding the comparison hilarious.)

@@ryannichols9452 I moved from recording & producing alot of vocals including my own to now coaching focusing on singing.. imo recording yourself 'Imitate' as best you can classic old school genuinely good singers, Elvis, Sinatra Cash, etc etc plus random stuff, & really hearing how you did over and over, is great ear training and develops the nuance for a good voice when you sing your own stuff. I tried so hard to teach a friend how to sing with her real voice. She was always singing in falsetto and sounded really nasal and didn't have any support. I pressured her as hell once and she finally did it and she was shocked lol. Sadly she still wanted to keep singing like she used to even if she sounded so much better singing with her true voice..sigh...

@@flwoed. I'm not an expert, I've just been singing in quires a lot during my early teens and had a great teacher who gave us good techniques, so I'll give you some basic tips on exercises to find your voice and learn to put power into it: Try singing with your talking voice first, it may feel weird ar first but it helps you to not alter your voice into something that could do more harm than good to your voice. Practice repeatedly saying "sss" "t" "shh" "rrrr" or "ffff" sounds or making other sounds that need you to engage your diaphram and hold a hand on your stomach so you can feel the muscles activate. Try to be relaxed in your throat and mouth when you sing and imagine that you're singing to someone standing far away and don't be afraid to articulate and move your mouth a lot to form the sound and let them actually come out. Good posture is also important, stand with lightly bent knees and a comfortably straight back If you're sitting down, sit at the front of the chair so your feet are in full contact with the floor and straight back. I'm sure there are a lot of voice exercises on YT that can help you out even better. Then it's all about training, your vocal cords are attached to muscles that need conditioning to work well. Good luck!

This clip is awesome for finding a good placement to sing from for whatever line you’re starting from. Maybe not for runs, but it helps me a lot when I’m struggling with a certain part of the song. I feel like this is a good “open throat” tip while being less pedantic about it and more down to earth and realistic .

@@RealAngelDust420 Idk, singing itself does have “controls” that have to be learned and mastered. It’s just more of a body awareness thing. It’s still an instrument at the end of the day. It’s just, the “chords, keys, adjustments” aren’t outwardly apparent.

Or INSTEAD: don’t even see it as imitation vs your “true sound”, but see it as a spectrum of tones and methods of delivery. It’s all just tools in a toolbox. Different registers, different resonators, dark vs bright tones, pinched vs open, all of these have their uses. When you practice ‘imitating’ instead see it as identifying what techniques they are using. This video is putting forward the idea that anything but an open tone in a lower register is not natural for you, but that’s wrong. Any sound you are capable of making is natural for you, even a pterodactyl scream. Following this logic, the majority of famous artists out there are singing unnaturally. Getting good means learning new things and doing more than what comes to you to do without training.

Well to be fair, the video is called "How to sing with YOUR natural voice" rather than "How to sing correctly" or smt like that. He's not talking about skills but about basic stuff ofc once you start actual practice and singing there is more than "Natural" or "imitated" voices.

It's not just about pitching. It's about pronunciation. We begin imitating in singing in the same way we begin imitating in speech. Mirror neurons fire and we copy actions. This is how regional accents come into being. When you imitate other singers, you are gonna sound like them, not entirely, but in part. Finding your own voice is simply learning to sing without those influences being so large.

I agree with you and also with the video, in the sense that singing is a process done very naturally, and a lot of what you're looking to achieve is already in your speaking voice, so shouldn't you should learn to feel it first?

I've been singing for years with my acoustic or in bands, and only recently discovered that my 3 octave range starts at C2, which is two tones below the bottom of Bass range. My years of singing Radiohead and City & Colour has now been surpassed with a much deeper, richer voice that sounds much more natural!

The thing is, for those of you who complain that your speaking voice does not sound good so it will not be great either for singing, remember this: 1. You might be the only one thinking that your natural voice is bad, even though others might not. 2. You might be speaking rather incorrectly in a very throaty and tense way, which is why when you apply it to your singing it does not sound good. If your case is the second, learning the correct vocal technique first will help, where later you can just transfer that to your speaking voice (both of them require you to support well with a clear sound). Once you get it, that becomes your natural (but refined) voice that defines you :)

I guess it helps that I don't see myself as much as a singer as I do as a guitarist :D Sure I sang in a choir, so I guess my technique is good, but my reasoning has been that I just have to be good enough to do it. I never really had the need to imitate anyone, just had to deal with the vocal parts when there isn't a singer around...
