Learn how to sketch various types of buildings and architecture in ink and watercolour with this series of 7 lessons and sketches. In this second lesson, I sketch an old, rustic doorway with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen and a cheap set of watercolour paints.
-----
MATERIALS I USED FOR ALL 7 SKETCHES
1. A spiralbound watercolour pad (A4 / American letter size). Cold-pressed (NOT) surface.
2. A travel set of 10 student watercolour pans: lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, Prussian blue, ultramarine blue, sap green, viridian green, yellow ochre, burnt sienna. I use a cheap set by Aquafine that I got from Amazon but any brand will do. Student quality is fine for sketching.
3. A watercolour pen brush. I use a couple of brands during the 7 sketches but I recommend Pentel over all others.
4. A black fine liner pen. I use a Sakura Pigma Micron pen with a 0.5 nib. Again, any brand is fine and a 0.5 nib is just a medium-sized nib.

Hope you enjoy the next sketch in this series. As ever, use the comments below to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer as soon as possible. The next sketch (Santorini in Greece) will be added next week (probably Wednesday).

the blue in your painting is so much cooler than that killer mediterranean blue. it creates a much more sombre mood.

I absolutely love this, it works for me in watercolour, I also love the way you don’t use £100 brushes and weird colours, and you are very relaxed, it has given me the inspiration to take up my brushes again 😁

Great to hear your voice Bob. Congratulations on building your empire. I was a pioneer of the late IDrawandPaint. You are still my hero for teaching me watercolors. I have actually won awards for my paintings and I invented a travel palette. It's been a long time since all that. Cheers

Good sketch, I would have roughed this sketch in pencil first then inked it. You also could got the mesh texture by scratching it in with a cocktail stick or some suchlike. Very nice though.

How do you get proportions so accurate so quickly?
@PhilDaviesArtist
@PhilDaviesArtist 4 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the lesson yet? I talk about this in the sketching out bit. An easy way to get a good proportion of a rectangle is to look at the diagonal angle between two of the corners. No matter how big or how small you draw the rectangle, the angle of the diagonal will stay the same.
@blue9946
@blue9946 4 жыл бұрын
@@PhilDaviesArtist I just watched the lesson. I still find it really difficult to get them right though, even with the enveloping method and the measuring angles/lengths. Is this just something that comes over time? Could you also do a lesson on mixing/choosing colours? I think this would be helpful. Thank you
