Gilmour is absolutely my favorite guitar player. His tone and style are so very full of emotion and passion.

I think one technique he has is to just stop for a bit, just to give you time to think about your life for a while

I used to do a couple of covers of Pink Floyd and they are one of my favorite bands. One "pro tip" if you want to sound like Gilmour. Listen to when he isn't playing. There are a lot of rests in his playing - he doesn't necessarily string all notes together constantly which I think is partially a blues influence. The other tip is "percussiveness". He'll rake into a bend for example. Like a couple of muted strings into a full step bend. Add that to what is in this video and you'll sound a lot like Gilmour.

When imitating the Legendary David Gilmour, one CAN NOT forget to mention the incredibly smooth and strong vibrato he has. One single note with a 1/2 to whole step slow consistent vibrato can be as tasteful as an entire vocabulary of licks.

David Gilmour's magic was never about gadgets and tone, but about thoughtful blues-inspired licks and a very melodic-driven mind. I realized that you are not *really* talking about how to "sound like Dave Gilmour" but rather how to put a couple of boundaries together for improvisation in this style. I have only been playing for 2 months and this single video unlocked an entire new realm of understanding for me. Thanks for another cool video! I’ve been playing for over 40 years. I’m completely self-taught, barring a few times when someone actually showed something new to me. I’ve only begun checking out instructional guitar videos in recent months. I was finally drawn to it by the desire to further explore my love of playing in open tunings, especially Open-G. After carefully weeding through and finding some great players, who really get to the core of what’s going on, I was able to acquire new devises that were instantly added to my musical vocabulary. It’s so invigorating and revitalizing. So, I delved straight into Keith Richards and Rich Robinson, etc. To entertain the tone freak side of me, I went straight to Gilmour. While my playing style already has a fair dose of his style, wherever it’s appropriate, I’ve been checking out a few vids. You do a great job of breaking things down. I've seen a lot of videos on capturing the Gilmour tone, but this one is the best yet, because it captures the Gilmour "approach." I learned more in this video than from all the others I watched on this topic combined.

That double stop is AWESOME!! So many variations you can pull off with it. Used this lesson and was playing outside.... loud. The cops came and actually COMPLIMENTED my playing..... before telling me to turn down a bit. They were pretty cool if you ask me. Just an awesome lesson for Gilmore lovers and trying to sound like him.

Gotta say man, i love your jam track series. Ive been playing forever, pretty technically sound, but always considered improvising my weakest area. Throwing on your jam tracks and just going apl over the neck in pentatonic, or whatever else you have listed, is like the funnest thing, brings me back to when i started, when i first realized i could play along to kirk hammett solos!

When you do the E minor arpeggio with bending to reach another note I've noticed that David sometimes does these double to triple bends that sound very Ghostly but very Floyidy. I'm not sure if you know what I'm talking about but David always freaking does it in his solos and I always love it lol. You sort of did it in that part but I know on his solos he does an extra bend sometimes where he plays the original note then bends it but the third time he bends the note he digs a bit deeper as he eases the bend to the sound of the original note. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but it's one of those very niche nuanced things that are a bit hard to describe lol.

Im 68 and am coming back to my roots-I remember the very first time I heard Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon- Its the only time I actually remember a first time listening experience of any song -I was at a friend's house with my bud's, nice stereo, and it is was so amazing I could not believe my ears-and now I am actually playing David Gilmour licks - all from this fantastic You Tube video- Your the man - and Long Live Rock-n-Roll-pass this great music forward to the younger generation - its timeless.

What I absolutely love about your videos is that you go straight to the point, without wasting time.

Your communication is very clear, concise and well-thought out. I'm sure you are a very good teacher. Well done. Of course some haters will say that you don't quite nail it, or that Gilmour is an unattainable guitar god (which he kinda is), but these techniques are good tools for the tool kit.

That lick from "Mother" is sweet as hell! Like you were sayingt, I tend to find my root on the 2nd string and blast off from there. I guess that would be in the Lydian / Phrygian modes, right? Excellent video!

Hey man, totally loving your videos! I have been following pretty much all of them. In the Maj7 arp. video you commented about that section on Under a Glass Moon from Petrucci/DT, and I would like to say that if you can do any type of breakdown/lesson/anything on some more Petrucci/DT material I would be immensely grateful! I'm sure others here would appreciate it too. I think Most Petrucci solos have something good to take for you guitar playing in general because it is very often conceived with a technical approach of hitting the right notes of the right chord in the right rhythm, if that makes sense. But anyways, thanks a bunch already!

Excellent! My biggest problem with trying to play lead is that I can't string-bend to save my life - I'm lucky if I can bend a note up a semitone. I have a Fender Telecaster so I can't blame the guitar.
