Today I am sowing more seeds; Sweet Williams are hardy perennials that are often treated as biennials. Sow in the summer or autumn for strong plants that produce masses of flowers the following season.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

I have some of these in Florida and they are very hardy and can grow very dense which is great for keeping the weeds out.

Fantastic! I love them for the coverage and weed prevention too. You're so lucky that they're hardy for you. I find mine self-seed quite readily so I always have some in the garden. The little seedlings come through our winters quite well.

We were having some critters who were destroying our trees, eating the insulation in the cars and using our lawn for their toilet. (Moose, squirrels, and dogs.) We tried a product that keeps them away. It is Wolf urine. Sometimes listed as Predictor Pee. It was a great warning to unwanted animals; it worked like a charm. I doubt if you would ever see another deer munching on your garden. (Here in Alaska Moose are a problem).

Oh, that sounds interesting. I've seen something that says it's tiger urine here int he garden centres and I have asked Richard to use our boundary as a bathroom but he just laughed at me!

first time I've come across you gal, Can you tell me how far apart you'd put them if grown in rows and the distance between each row , because when mine are big enough I'm putting them up my allotment, thank you for the videos 👍
@cottoverdi

Hi there, I plant mine about 20cm apart but not in rows because I just plant them in my borders. It's best to follow the packet directions - they are usually pretty accurate. Good luck with yours.

Thank you Annette. My friend is doing a green and white garden and the Alba would be a great addition. Neither of us have a green house or a cold frame. When do you recommend we plant them. As they have to be grown in pots. Thank you as always for your great videos.

Hi Penelope, the Alba would be a lovely idea - also, before they bloom, they have the most wonderful fluffy green tips. If you don't have anywhere to overwinter them and you want to sow seeds, then I would sow them now into the pots, just like you would in a garden bed. Keep them hydrated (but not overly wet) until they germinate and then they will hopefully be strong and big enough to make it through the winter with no protection. There are hardy perennials/biennials so they are pretty robust as long as they are not super tiny during a tough winter. Good luck 😁

Hello, I live in Egypt and I have William Sweet seeds. I want to know when it blooms when planted with seeds. Can I take the seeds from the flower after they wilt and replant them? Sorry for not being able to translate the explanation in the video. 🌹
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi 3 ай бұрын
Hi Ella, Sweet William will bloom about 110 days from sowing the seeds, BUT, they need a period of COLD in order to initiate blooms. So, if the seed is sown during warm weather, then they will create lots of leafy growth the first year and only flower the following year. I hope this clarifies for you. Good Luck. 😊🌱

Mine have flowered and are dying I’ve taken some seeds can you tell me what to do with the rest they are very tall and some are leaning over the side thank you
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, if they've finished flowering, then definitely deadhead them - I'd cut them down quite low to a leaf node, and they may well flower again for you this year if your season is long enough.

There are series that are flowering without vernalisation. The „amazon“ and „Sweet“-series for example.

Can you sow them in spring to plant out before or after your last frost date? Thanks
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi there, I've never sown them in spring (always too many other things on the list) but anytime from June onwards would be fine in my area. They will be wonderful big and healthy plants for the next year.
@vikd8244
@vikd8244 Жыл бұрын
You can sow them really early inside( january or february) and plant them out 6-8 weeks before your last frost. Dont forget to harden them off properly :)

Which month is better to sow sweet Williams?
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy, Yes, I think if you live in UK, it will be too late to sow them this year. They really need to be sown in the summer months, probably latest August, so that they are big enough plants to make it through the cold spells during winter. Make a note in you diary for next year and have a go. Hopefully you will be able to find some plants in a local garden centre in the spring. 🌸💚

Hardy annual?
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Yes, these are hardy but they are really biennials so it's best if you can sow them now so that they have a chance to flower next year. If not, sow them in the spring and then plant them out after the last frost and you may get a flower or 2 that season but the following year, they will be stupendous!
