Funniest thing is when I look back and realize how many times natives either didn't notice or didn't care enough to point out my mistakes. I'm not confident by any stretch of the imagination, but a co-worker claimed I didn't even have an accent. When we hang out she almost never speaks English, if I don't understand her she'll repeat it or rephrase it but always in spanish. It's a huge ego boost, but I still just can't get myself to completely relax.

She's a real one. Take her out to dinner bro. Not everyone is so willing, but also your Spanish may be better than you think it is. Just keep it up and consider these things and let it flow.

The shame of being Latina and not being fluent held me back so many years. When I decided that was no longer serving me, I noticed my fluency jumped. The funny thing is, I realized I knew more than I thought I did. I was exposed to a lot of comprehensible input just growing up in a family of native Spanish speakers, but because of the discrimination they faced coming to this country, they did not make it a point to teach us the language. Still, there are some words and phrases that I've always used in Spanish that I've taught my kids. I just had to stop being so timid and uncomfortable with speaking outside of my home. Ricky, you're advice about just having a conversation with people, as simple as it sounds, really does take you to the next level. I enjoy your videos and the energy you bring. You did one where you broke down Bad Bunny's lyrics that was really cool because I'm a fan of his. I know you spoke of having a course coming out, I would be interested in that especially if you have a Caribbean Spanish twist with it.

Please keep me posted on how your progress too! The shame of not being fluent and a primarily Latina woman has held me back to the point where I don't want to try. I felt the native speakers were less forgiving about it as oppose to someone from a different race who is learning the language

Oh man, I’m so glad I found this video when I did!! My goal is to speak Spanish without switching to English, and its like I can’t make myself relax. I was speaking with someone earlier this month, and he told me I sound really tense when I speak. It’s frustrating, because I know what to say, bubt it doesn’t come out!! Your right though, no one is judging me, well except me and my brain. 😂

Me encantan tus tips, ¡muchas gracias señor! Todo es un proceso. Saludos, y amor.

I have studied for a year so far, and I feel like I do not know anything , I listen to shows in Spanish and I can tell when most words begin and end now, Its not just all blended, I am lucky to understand 2 words out of 10, when reading I can maybe go 3-4 out of 10 words, ... , I know I'm making progress from week to week but its very slow, I am finding out a language is much bigger than I thought , I will never quit , I guess that is what matters.

That’s exactly how I feel. Couldn’t believe how big a project I had taken on. Little suggestion... I learnt a lot from a story in Spanish in B1 level. Spanish got all the basic vocabulary and structures from it. I studied it and listened to each part maybe 40 /50 times then I took off. Try learning from some dialogues in basic everyday topics even write your own Simple language to start

One of the things I realized to learn a language was that I had to get over myself. Drop the ego and realize there is no way to be perfect and I’m going to make mistakes and I shouldn’t be embarrassed about it.

So, I gave an interview on public radio in SPanish. My Spanish is lower intermediate. All of the four ladies (native speakers of Spanish) that were participating in the interview understood what I meant and only corrected me (in the most subtle ways) if what I said was super wrong. It was super fun and I loved it. They were interested in my journey towards learning their language. This is kinda a brag (for myself) but mostly it's to say that making mistakes is fine.

I live in a part of the world where there is basically 0 interaction with Spanish speaking people. So naturally my speaking and communicating abilities are quite low. The most I used my Spanish was while working at a hotel but then I got real nervous a lot of the time and still reverted to English. Over the years I've become a bit more confident but still there's a long road ahead of me. Espero que algun dia voy a hablar mas tranquilamente pero ahora estoy muy feliz que entiendo este lenguaje tan bella.

I am a Bulgarian, born in 1986. Back in the day it was not so common for everyone to learn English. But as both my parents spoke English, used it for work and have been abroad so it was natural for me to learn it at some point, however: My first WHY was that I wanted to understand the cartoons on the Cartoon Network! As funny as that sounds it was a big enough "why" for me. I was about 7-8 years old (1st or second grade in school) and being only a few years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and Communism new TV channels and cable TV were entering in Bulgaria but most of the foreign ones were not translated and had no subtitles. And I remember around the same time I knew enough vocabulary and grammar to read, write, speak and understand a bit of English, however I have not yet really spoken it to anyone other than my tutor. So me and my mom were on Oxford Street in London and we went to this amazing cafe where they had some freshly made sweets and cakes. I asked my mother for one piece and she said to me: "You can get anything you want but you have to order it yourself" She gave me the money and sat down and I was left staring at the display of amazing cakes. I was a bit shy but my desire for cake was stronger lol. I remember going to the counter and after I ordered the man behind it smiled and asked me something and after that we had some nice conversation and I remember that he was from Poland. I don't remember if the cake was good but I was so happy with the overall experience and as you can see by the length of this comment - I like to express myself lol. So Bilingue Blogs is right! Find your why and practice speaking in low risk situations. Do you really care what a random stranger thinks about your Spanish? I am starting to learn Spanish now and one of my reasons why is that for the past 3-4 years I have been dancing Salsa (LA & Cuban) and Bachata and I go to international dance festivals and I want to dive deeper into the Latin American culture, understand the lyrics of the songs (I do not know if that is such a good idea for some songs lol) and I would like to one day travel to Miami, Cuba, The Dominican Republic and other Spanish Speaking Countries and living in Bulgaria and being part of the EU Spain itself is close. And when I travel to a place I want to live in and feel the actual culture of the place - not just the English Speaking Tourist Traps. Wish you success in your Spanish learning!

I think something that helps is to not focus on your accent/every single word and to focus on what you want to say/the emotion associated with what you're saying like if someone speaks in perfect English with a monotone and has nothing interesting to say, you're not necessarily going to want to talk to them someone with broken English who says interesting things with enthusiasm is a lot more appealing I smile and move my hands and vary my stress and intonation and I think that helps :3

Rickie, this was great. I studied Spanish for 2 years in high school in the mid-70's. I didn't use it very much at all until 1989 when I took a job in a clinic that cared for "trabajadores migrantes." This was in Indiana. As I worked alongside colleagues who were native speakers--some Cubana, Puerto Ricana, Mexicana, Tex-Mex, and others, I began to pick back up some of my Spanish from school. I'd give an instruction to a patient at times, though, and they'd go to the reception desk and ask, "Do I have to do what she said?" And I'd be like, "What did I say???" LOL. I moved up in this workplace to become a Nurse Practitioner for Women's Health. I learned to do a medical history and physical exam, and much of the needed teaching without an interpreter. I'd ask one of the native speakers to double check that I hadn't confused them too much. But heaven help me if they wanted to discuss the weather! (Just as well there aren't many Spanish speakers in England where I live now. Weather is the favourite topic of the British people!) So now I have just one friend at church who is a native speaker and who is now a Spanish teacher. I hope to learn more from her once the lockdowns are over. Meanwhile, I enjoy trying to understand what you're saying when you speak Spanish. Why am I working so hard to try to become more fluent?? Good question! I'm 62 years old now, and it just feels like something that I left dangling and never finished. I would probably benefit more from learning Romanian, French, German, or Urdu. I live near a multi-cultural city. Pues, es todo para ahora. Muchas gracias. Tus videos son graciosos. (I hope that means fun or something like that. LOL)

You really highlighted well some of the fears of (primarily) English-speakers who attempt to speak a foreign language. For myself, overcoming that fear of making a mistake is always a struggle. But like this video highlights expertly, true language process begins when we are humble enough to accept mistakes, learn from them, and move on. That 3rd skit about "grammar Nazi" was really hilarious but true about perfection-centered language learners; they do not want to lose face. But in my experience, I enjoyed a vacation a few years ago in Portugal when I stopped caring how many mistakes I made and rolled with it.

I only speak Spanish with my patients, but it's because I will likely never see them again 😂😂 so I don't care if I embarrass myself. However, I refuse to speak with my coworkers. They try to talk to me in Spanish, but I panic and freeze.

Ive been speaking spanish for 2 1\2 years and I used to be nervous about mistakes so bad. Until i went to work and spoke with some older domincan women in spanish and they told i speak very well. I was so hung up about the subjunctive until i realized even native speakers don't use correctly. Also another tip to other learners you can simplify your spanish and still be understood. Remember its all about effective communication not complex sentences. I once forgot the word zapatería so i said "voy a la tienda de zapatos" and my puerto rican friend understood me just fine.

Hace Sol! Oh déjame quitar esa chaqueta entonces...Clarrro! I used to have the same fears speaking until one day I stopped thinking too hard and caught myself “flowing” in spanish with native speakers. Being fluent is not so much being correct word for word but mostly that you are understood in a conversation...

So I moved to Madrid about 3 months ago, and kind of similarly I only really feel confident talking to people who know I'm from the United States and not a native speaker. Where as I'm honestly still afraid to have random conversations or for example speak up and ask for help at random places because I feel like I would be "exposed" as not being a native speaker. Slowly I'm realizing nobody cares half as much as I do lol but still part of the process, but reminding myself that I'm here for a reason and to capitalize on any situation is something I need to do more of!
