In this short video, you'll see the basic steps for how I speed paint miniatures for roleplaying games, like DnD Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and other tabletop RPGs. The same painting flow works for painting miniatures for board games, too. The key tips for faster miniature painting are to use a simple color palette, 5 colors or less, and painting with the largest brush you feel comfortable with.
The total time to paint this miniature is just under 20 minutes.
For most of my tabletop quality painting where I want to finish a lot of models quickly, I'll use a point round size #2 brush or bigger. Remember to avoid using a wet palette if you can, since you won't need to do much thinning or blending while speed painting.
After you finish base coating the model, you'll want to apply a liberal amount of wash to pull up the details (or darken the shadows). This enhances the contrast which is important for a decent paint job no matter the quality standard.
The best wash you can use are the premade ones by Citadel or Army Painter. In most cases, I'll wash with undiluted Agrax Earthshade or a similar dark brown wash. This pulls up all the details nicely and doesn't shift color hues too much.
If you want, you could finish a model after this wash step. But, for a bit more "pop" off the table, I suggest painting a few minor details and adding some highlights to restore some of the color that the washing step may have muted. Finalize your paint job with 1-3 coats of matte varnish.
