This is one of the many reasons i love the railpro system. Automatic speed matched and each loco in the train talks to one another. Honestly to me the best dcc system ever made

Hi Roy, Just a suggestion... you should buy a locomotive (different road name), set that to exactly how you want it, then match all your UP engines to it. That way you will be able to run your UP engines in any consist. Then put the other engine away and only use it when you are going to speed match. Dan

Roy, that was another nice video on the steps you took to speed match and while anything takes time to do right, you made it look good, thanks. I think (GE) good enough for matching a pair of loco/s that stay together and once loaded down with cars will run perfect.

i have a couple easy questions. Do you need to speed match in the reverse direction also? Why did you decide to speed match to the speed of the faster loco? Why not the use slower locomotive as your reference speed? Do you only match specific pairs of locos, or do you match all your locomotives to each other? Love, love, love the realism of the locomotive pairs rolling through the town and canyon. The action shots on your layout are beautiful.

Great video Roy. Good way to speed match too and a very informative how to do video as well. It's my least favourite job but it has to be done. I use a loadable speed table as Atlas locos donot speed match well as to much variation with the motors. And it allows me to you use cv 65 and 95 forward and reverse trim. Otherwise my atlas would all run as single locomotives.

Roy, Just how quick and easy was that? A nice place to start for those who are thinking about speed matching their own loco's. When you start to speed match the rest of the fleet is it possible to start with those speed values that you already have or do you have to start fresh with every set? Anyway, well done, Cheers, Chris Perry.

I don't know if you only ever intend to run your loco's in their matched pairs, but what we do (a friend & I) we have two control loco's, a mainline loco & a switcher (because obviously they run at different speeds), which should be the best running loco's you have in your fleet, and then we speed match every other loco to the relevant control loco. That way if you ever want to swap loco's about or go mad like we did the other week and run a ten power unit consist, all the loco's will run pretty much at the same speed without any issues...

Roy, this was an easier approach than I have seen others go through. I hope this method stands the test of time. I hope you'll share if down the road you find that the three speeds you've matched isn't fine enough for your entire fleet to work together.

I assume that matched pairs will drift apart over time and that matching all engines to a single reference will have all engines drifting apart randomly. This would be due to different rates of wear or build up of dirt on wheels, different rates of wear in motor bushes, lead engine working harder to overcome air resistance, etc. Are these all very small factors that combine to become significant or do they remain insignificant?

Very nice. Kind of the same question as others but the middle speed. It seems the faster was too fast at middle speed so why not adjust that down? Or was it just easier to concentrate on on Locomotive?

Great video / tutorial. Thank you so much for simplifying the process. I know you said you didn't want this to be about JMRI, but I noticed that you seem to be able to jump between programming the CVs and then running the locos. I am running Decoder Pro 4.6-R81496DC and have been reluctant to upgrade (Ain't broke = don't fix it). I have to restart my Decoder Pro each time, switching command back & forth between program mode with PR3 and then changing the Zephyr Xtra. It didn't seem as thought you were having to do that. Or, is it as simple that you use "Programming on the main" that I once was told was dangerous? What release do you run? You can always just say I should defer this to the JMRI community & I'll understand. Thx again for all the info you share.

I heard that the newest DCC systems have a M.U.(Multi-Unit)auto-adjust built into them.Now how true this is,I don't know.

Hey Roy just wanted to pass on Another Great Video I did see when your 5475 was going through the Turnout it was losing power and @ one point it looked like it was dragging 5330 but video play back can make it Hard to tell I know when some of my KATO'S my D.C.Engines go across the KATO Turnouts they Tend to Loose for a fraction of second power or the Lights flick and that's after cleaning the Turnouts, Cleaning the Wheels on my Engines and cleaning the Track I'm kind of wondering if A person would Direct wire there Trucks to the Frame of the Engine you have less cutting out.. Another thing I did on my SD70ACE's & my SD70AH Spirit I pulled the Trucks made sure they where Free of Foreign Material's then I Lubed the Dog Bone lightly going into the Truck Tower and into the Counter Balancer's with Labells 106 white Grease I lubed with 108 on the Motor Shafts) Using the white Grease I've seen less ( JITTERING ) from my Engines I believe it puts a slight bit of Resistance on the Engine's Drivetrain my 70ACes Always seemed to jitter And Now they Run smoother than my other Engines Roy you might try that on One or 2 of Aces see if see any Difference.. I also Done this Lube on my SD40-2 and that Engine Runs like it on carpet of Air but I think I need to Replace its light Board because it still has a light blinking issue especially at Low Speeds..

For me I will want to run the trains according to the prototypical max speeds of them. So some may rum 60MPH, others 100MPH and so on. In the end I want to make consists randomly. Then running them not in speed steps but setting the speeds in MPH. I assume this should be possible and according to those who designed the DCC CV stuff and firmware on decoders.

So you change the settings while on the program track, and then move to the circle to test? Do you have to select the loco over and over again on JMRI? Or can you leave it on the screen and just put the loco back on the program track?

Roy I'm gonna tell you I'm still having a lot of trouble understanding JRMI but also I have not gotten to any point of even trying it. In time I hope to get there

A little different method than I've seen before. But this one is successful for you and you've not been successful with methods others have used. So my conclusion is, differing methods work for different people. The key is to keep experimenting until you find success. Now Roy, when are you going to run two locos on the lead and and a DPU on the rear? (The devil made me say ask.)

If manufacturers were a little smarter, we wouldn't have to do this. And its MUCH WORSE for us non-DCC runners. The biggest issue is the inability to back-drive mechanisms due to high gear ratios and worm gears. I have one steam engine with an overrunning clutch, which runs well with anything from Athearn Hustlers on down.
