I’m reconfiguring the track just west of Echo Canyon on my N-scale model railroad. I want to show you what I’m doing. And I want to tell you WHY I’m doing it. I’d like to tell you about the change, because you may be thinking of making similar changes on your layout.

The trackplan changes make a lot of sense! I think it will make that section look less 'messy' as well. Looking forward to seeing the finished layout.

Always more fun when you can watch trains run and 2 at once is ever better. Watching many model railroaders make many changes sometimes bothers me when I think they have the perfect set up but I think this makes great sense on your railroad. I have enjoyed watching it grow and change over the years. I hope you are feeling okay and wish you the best with everything you are dealing with. Thank you Roy.

I don't think you'll be sorry with this new arrangement. I'm glad I have the foresight in my track design to add in a continuous run connection for when I just want to run a train without it spending half the run in the "underground" portion of my layout!

Good point, Ken! That's what helices and staging often do: they keep our trains running "underground" half of the time. ...Roy

Nothing wrong with change Roy providing it is specifically to achieve an improvement to the layout. I have had to completely rewire my layout and so far it5 has taken me nearly a year. As my layout id DC I have had to use a lot of wire even though I have in places been able to reduce it, so I think I am around 2 miles so far. Goodness knows why we consider this hobby to be fun. At my age with failing eyesight, the shakes and severe body movement issues no way can this be fun...BUT...at the end of the day it sure will be. Good health to all. Cheers, Bob

Thanks for your comment, Mark. I hear you. Daryl and I are both modeling the UP Evanston Sub. But there are two differences: First, he has more than 10 times the amount of space for his layout than I have. And second, he started his layout this past fall and is making enormous progress. By contrast, I started in 2014 and am making very, very slow progress. LOL! ...Roy

Some very interesting changes! Back when I started building layouts I got too rigid in my thinking; I wasn't interested in changing existing tracks. Mow I have "liberated" myself and have taken the attitude "I built it, I can unbuild it and start again" :-) It opens up a lot more possibilities.

Hello, my friend! Thanks for your comment. I look forward to "re-integrating" the western end of Echo Canyon back into my scenery. When I do, I will certainly share it with you in a future video. The "unexpected rise" you mentioned really isn't as much of a rise as it appears to be. I put a level on the tracks, and there's no perceptible rise until after the tracks cross Echo Creek, at which point there is a slight rise. The Woodland Scenics inclines and existing scenery create the illusion of a rise in Echo Canyon. But, until I get to work on the scenery there, I'm continuing to run my trains to make sure that I'm happy with the new track configuration. And I'm working on a video about a re-configuration of the track in the White Mountain/eastern helix area of my layout. Again, thanks for your comment. ...Roy

I started using the WS foam inclines years ago and love them. They can't create inclines with a 1/2% grade, but I've never seen the big benefits of a 2.5 percent grade over a 2 or 3 percent grade. The foam inclines have the advantages of mathematic simplicity and guaranteeing a precise, uniformly continuous grades.

Hi Roy, Interesting update to your layout. I must admit I'm a little confused on how you're going to connect the new track work to your Western Helix track, so I'm looking forward to your next video. Now I'll need you to sit down for a moment as my OCD is kicking in 🤣😂🤣 You're running your trains backwards aka wrong main track😂 Generally most railroads try to keep the engineer (who sits on the right side of the locomotive) on the outside of double track, to be able to view the line side signals. Yes there are excepts and many segments of double track are now bi-directional signaled, but it remains common to see train movement where the engineers are to the outside, not the inside. OK I feel better now 🤣 You know Roy this is just good natured fun on my part and Rule #1 always applies😊 Thanks for sharing this video Roy and I'm looking forward to your next layout update video. Cheers, Rich S.

Thanks, Rich. I appreciate your comment. You're right: trains normally run on the right-hand side of double-track mainlines. But they run on the left-hand through Echo Canyon and beyond to Ogden, because the right-hand track crosses over the left-hand track at the west end of the Curvo tunnels near the east end of Echo Canyon, and it thus becomes left-hand running between Curvo and Ogden. Have a great day, my friend. ...Roy

I have learned. I'll be running trains on my new layout to see if it works like I planned before I add scenery. I will be using grades this time, I haven't done that in 30 years. No more than 2 %.

Hi! Roy, A nice development. I'll never get finished as I don't put in the hours. I enjoy railfanning, even on my loop and had a steam train, Stanier Black 5, 4-6-0 pulling 9 mk1 coaches for fun recently. Pleased to see you looking on good form. Regards Stephen.

Im in the process of tearing out a section with two turnouts involved. I wasn't getting 100% operation on this area with all my stock. Can't have it. Im actually switching over to Peco 80 due to my off the wall layout design. Its all fun and I feed off KZfaq Modelers.

I have reconfigured track a few times to improve the performance of equipment and to improve switching possibilities. You are right that operating for a while shows shortcomings. I’m not as good at foreseeing how things will work. In theory they make sense. In practice not so much. Hopefully people will see that you can make these changes and should in some cases. You’ve done a spectacular job so far. I enjoy this very much. Job well done Roy!

Thanks so much for your comment, Michael. I really appreciate it. Sometimes we get caught up in the idea that we've created a perfect track plan that will never need to be changed. Only after running trains on our layouts for a while do we discover changes that will greatly improve our track plans. ...Roy

That wasa good change basically doing a double track. Hi started to do a dbl track tri-ovale with a single line at the back, but realized bit after making it a dbl track ment simpler opps - run two trains in either direction was a 👍👍👍 change !

You have the same Desres with your layout as I do (I don't have a layout) yet) but N scale looks like the appropriate size for the space I woud have for a layout the only issue i have with N scale would be finding the types of Locomotives I would want to run (Iconic Canadian Steam) in N Scale. So we will see how the future comes and if I can stop living vicariously and actually have a layout at some point (Also if anyone knows of anyone making Iconic Canadian Steam Locomotives in N Scale do point me in their direction as I would be glad to see this)

Good Evening Roy! My question for You this time is not about layouts, structures, scenery or anything like that! It's kind of difficult for me to ask! Here it is:. How would You deal with friends, and even family members who MAY criticize You for preferring this hobby, that I also like, because some of them think that I'm are too old for playing with model trains? Moreover in Latin countries like maybe Panama and the Dominican Republic, where I'm from, that may not even accept that someone with our age have a preference for this hobby? Best wishes for You! RR

Hi Robert! It certainly can be upsetting when friends and family have no interest in, or even mock your interest in, model railroading. Of course, your hobbies are none of their business. But what can you do in the meantime? Well, for one thing, you can pursue and enjoy the hobby alone. Since coming back to the hobby in 2014, I have always believed that I was the only model railroader here in Panama where I live. Recently, though, I have been contacted about the hobby by two different people who live here in Panama. Neither of them has a layout yet, and I still haven't met either of them in person but you can be sure that I eventually will. I try to travel to Pennsylvania each year, and I hang out with tons of model railroad friends there. There are no train clubs, stores, or shows here in Panama, but I include all of those kinds of things in my travel itineraries, and I get to spend time with other model railroaders in these places. And then there's your model railroad friends online, in videos and especially in live streams. My KZfaq analytics tell me that a vast majority of my viewers are older, retired men, just like me, but certainly not all of them. No, Robert, build your empire, and model railroad friends will find you. In the meantime, just enjoy the hobby and please stay in contact. Your friend in the hobby, Roy
