I must admit that I did not expect this kind of video by a fashion influencer, and this approach you have embraced is really admirable. Influencers have a great impact on people lives, habits and feelings, and the message you convey with this video is quite disruptive nowadays and shows a lot of responsibility. my compliments, I hope you will continue this way.

I work in a cashmere shop and the amount of people who don’t know how to hand wash is amazing! Please help me out and do the video 🙏🏼 Hand washing is always the better way to care for cashmere, unless it has a leather/suede/fur trim 👍🏻

I think the difficult part for me is if it is just one or two items I need to hand wash then that’s fine, but if I hand wash most of my jumpers it would be too much for me, I don’t have the time and strength to do all that.

Love buying second hand! I found a Dolce and Gabbana mens suit for $50! The pants fit my waist perfectly. I took it to the tailors, had the pants hemmed and the arms taken in. Fits me great now!

What I find interesting about shopping second hand is that I am less concerned with the brand. If it fits and I can tell the quality is there I am more likely to buy it than on brand name alone. Brand does influence my purchase if I know that brand has a history of quality. I was in a second hand shop and unfamiliar with a brand but the quality was there and I loved a coat so I bought it. In all, I bought 5 coats and the total was less than the price of one Zara coat. I did a bit of research when I got home and discovered the coat I loved retailed for €650. All it needed was a simple tack of the cord detail on one of the sleeves. It literally took me less than 5 minutes. It is good as new and I cannot wait to wear it!

Loved this video, especially points 4 and 5 . I use the look books that the retailers include in their emails as inspiration, then go to shop my closet. Went to charity shop and found an amazing caramel long coat (think MaxMara) $31:00 dollars lining was beautiful all buttons on,no smell AMAZING! Wear it with caramel trousers, roll neck, boots and it makes we feel like I spent a million bucks! Clothing can be so emotional, it should always make you feel like you won the lottery! Winning

Hi Emma, I am creating my wardrobe out of second hand clothing mostly. With my budget I would never buy so much good quality coats, blazers, skirts, sweaters made of wool, cashmere, silk, leather. Outwear costs $14-20, and original price is $200-600. I just love that!

You really encouraged me to dive in secondhand shopping, I must admit it’s surprisingly great! Being a germaphobe I always struggled to pull the trigger and go for it. Fortunately you made me realise you can actually find amazing quality pieces, even brand new ones, with tags still attached, on secondhand websites! I’ve always been conscious when it comes to sustainability and never over purchased; choosing quality over quantity has been my mantra ever since but this is another step into an even more eco friendly lifestyle! Thank you so much!!!

If I see something I like, I keep it on a wish list and wait until it goes on sale. Most of the time I forget about it, but if I still love it weeks later, I get it far cheaper. Also a better way to shop the sales, as I get things I thought about while they were full price instead of being caught up in the sale frenzy. That’s my main tip!

Great tips & smart common sense! I'm French & have used some for years: "shopping" in my wardrobe (my style is much like yours) including #firsthandvintage handbags, got incredible Ebay deals including a perfect Le Tanneur tan leather handbag for 15 euros (great French brand!), a stunning Cartier gold-ring A5 leather planner, amazing vintage leather Filofaxes (excellent quality, unlike new ones). For online shopping, I also do the 'add item in your cart but wait a day before making the decision' trick. Finally I prefer buying from local shops whenever possible, which allows me to touch, feel and try on items whenever possible and because I hate having to return items online, it is such a waste ecologically speaking. Esp. on Amazon many of the items are destroyed and not resold!

I up graded my de bobbler to yours and what a game changer !!!!!! it's even great on jog bottoms / sweatshirts besides the normal jumpers . my best ebay buys are my 100% leather fossil bags are worth 4/6 times new to what i buy and as i look after them and after time i might sell one or two and then buy another style & often will buy the dust bags (with adding these i get more money ) . Also if i see something in store i will then look around online , i saw a lovely scarf in Joules and so looked around and got it £10 cheaper and still brand new online :) x

I used to love buying vintage when I was younger and worked in central London but kind of got out of the habit when I moved to Devon but with Vestiaire I found a pretty much brand new Chloe camel coat that was probably around £1500 originally for about £200 and it's so beautiful. Love the tips Emma - so true about being influenced to buy things that aren't really you and that don't really work with your own style. I could kick myself for some of the times I have done this. I suppose it's all experience to help you figure out your own style but I think these questions and being real with yourself is such a good way to avoid the mistakes. When I worked for Harper's Bazaar id often go to sample sales and buy things that were so statement and not very me. Some of them I still like but actually now I'd probably never buy half of those things I just got caught up in amazing designer pieces at such reduced prices! Thanks for the vid Emma! Great advice as always. I feel I need like a pocket version of you to carry with me in my bag when I'm shopping to help me make my shopping choices! 😂 Xx

Amina a yes they really are now. They didn’t used to be so expensive in my experience but I do find all vintage to be quite pricey now. Good morning Emma girl 💖. What a down to earth common sense video! The tip on filling your basket and then walking away for a day works wonders. I actually started to do that a few months ago. Much to my surprise, after leaving it for a day or two I get emails from the brand asking me if I forgot something and offered me a discount code for up to 20%off! Of course when the thrill of filling my basket subsided I found I really could live without the items that were in the basket 😂. I would love to see a video on caring for your clothes. Maybe we all can share little tips and tricks 😉. Since I have now completed my wardrobe basics, I will be shopping second hand designer. My husband recommended these sites to me but I wasn't sure how legit they were. Since I've seen you use the sights I feel more confident making those purchases.

I have always liked watching you but so many times what you showed was so far above my budget I skipped lately. Then I saw this heading and I am so glad that you have embraced both second-hand in general, and thrifting on a low budget. Except for underpinnings and shoes, 80% of my wardrobe is thrifted at very low cost, and none of it is of low quality. The other 20% are organic fabric found on sale. The only man-made fibers are in coat linings. (I tried taking them out and ruined a few nice linen jackets.)

Buying secondhand is one of my favorite things to do! Especially when shopping for designer/investment pieces. I’m still in university, but I don’t want to compromise quality when it comes to my clothes and I’ve found that searching for quality investment wardrobe pieces (i.e. wool coats, a trench coat, cashmere, leather goods, etc!) is so fun! I bought a brand new Aquascutum trench for $75 last month and it’s my favorite coat the moment.

Some very good mindful tips, it’s great your being such an advocate for this, I think it’s especially important for younger people that might not be inclined to shop second hand to see how beneficial it can be. I also think there is an equivalent to comfort eating when it comes to buying things to make yourself feel better. Sometimes if you’re upset and want to treat yourself you’ll make that purchase to try and cheer yourself up but probably don’t really need it so it’s a waste. Ive definitely been guilty of that before!

Great video! I love second hand shopping. With your inspiration I purchased a BEAUTIFUL Chanel classic double flap medium large black lamb skin leather handbag. It is from 1987 is in amazing condition and has the gold plated hardware and I prefer the lambskin quality from vintage. I looked for 2 years to find the exact size, quality and price. I love it and appreciate it more because of the history and having to really search out for what I really wanted. I also purchase many clothing items second hand and find it fun to find special treasures to build a perfect wardrobe that suites my style.

I suck at #5-Sell to Buy. Tried taking things to local consignment shop-they didn’t want past season things as that’s not what was selling. But that’s when I do my clear out,,,so was disappointed and felt like a waste of time. For now, it’s easier to send things to family or charity shops though that’s not funding new purchases 😏. Making a Pinterest style board is a fun way to get inspiration especially when you are stumped for making a fresh outfit with your current pieces. Great video, Emma!

Useful and thoughtful tips as always, Emma. I've been shopping my closet this year and come to realise that I have most of the things I'll ever need. In the past I've bought very similar items to something I already have. It's so easy to get carried away. Regarding selling stuff, I'd say that's a brilliant idea, but don't just give damaged, ratty stuff to charity. At least donate some nice things, too, or they won't benefit very much.

Hi Emma I agree, amazing tips on leaving the items on your basket when shopping! Definitely worked on me few times already ! Can’t wait for your wardrobe care vid. Also wondering any tips on how do you wear and wash your blazers please? I always dry clean them but feel so guilty for wearing my blazer once and hesitate to dry clean them right away (because I simply don’t wanna wear it in rows) but then I ended up having few pieces hanging on the rail lol

Fantastic video, Emma! Love your style and content, and you are certainly an inspiration:) Very simple and „no brainer“ tips which each one of us can easily put to life. It will be great if you can share some further tips on how to sell items online (e.g. eBay) to ensure items really ultimately sell. Thank you ❤️

Brilliant tips Emma. Fantastic video as always. I've definitely made some of those mistakes in the past too. Now I love my secondhand finds. Recently purchased a brown cashmere sweater for £4.50.... Just needed a careful handwash and a bit of debobbling to make it look like new. Bargain 👍💖👌

I think unless you are a) very lucky, and b) looking at a small local charity (hospices are good) with one outlet only, in an affluent area, you are not going to get anything marvellous in a High St charity shop any longer. Apart from the fact the volunteers get first dibs on stuff, they know as well as we do that anything with a significant resale value can be sold elsewhere for a far better price. CRUK and Oxfam certainly sell on eBay. Sadly the High St outlets tend to be full of OAPs and parents looking for something cheap. And we can learn from men, too - if it’s good they will wear it to death. Look at the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales.

My problem with e-bay is many vendors will not let you return things that don't fit, and since you don't get to try it, it's hard to know if it will be right.

Hi Emma. I really, really want to buy secondhand but I feel I'm not knowledgable enough on the subject. I always worry about sizes, returns, dupes, reputable websites, etc. I live in a small town where our choices of secondhand stores are extremely limited. Thank you for sharing. I love your videos. Have a wonderful week.

Really great video, Emma! Thanks for keeping us all thinking about being more conscious! I also really recommend clothes swaps; I've been to two in my local town. You take clothes you no longer love, but which are in great condition, and then go 'shopping' for new to you clothes, taking up to the same number of items as you've brought. So you pay nothing, but fulfill that new to me feeling. No smelly clothes, a lovely evening out with friends and some great new clothes.

I definitely need to be more open minded when it comes to second handed... I’ve always been concerned about bed bugs, etc 🤦🏻‍♀️. But my daughter LOVES going to second handed stores (she actually went today and got great stuff, and I’m like: ‘wait!! We have to wash all that before even going to your room!!!’ 😂. Anyways, will give it try!! Btw, Lydia Elise Millen mentioned you on her video about this topic 👍🏻

Some wise words, Emma! I agree with all you said, and have managed to sell quite a lot recently via eBay following a big wardrobe cull - I have used some of the cash to buy a couple of items from there and a new pair of boots that I felt I needed. I really hate buying new, and always try to find things second hand, but hopefully some people will continue buying new, good quality clothing, so that the rest of us can acquire them later!

My go to for clothes and shoes is Ebay, my most recent bargain was a pair of Chloe shoe boots with a knitted cuff, I bought them for £39 they were originally £774 💕 One of my favourite things to do is to polish my shoes and boots....I always look at other people's shoes and boots, the difference a goid polish makes is incredible 🥰

Hi Emma, all good points, and thanks for the reality check that most of us have budgets, of which clothes and accessories are a small portion. The world is full of beautiful clothes/shoes/bags, most of which we don’t need, but if we’re careful with our choices, we can add a few gems each season. I’d like to also suggest buying on sale - this might work better for basics rather than statement pieces which sell out quickly, but I use it to buy better quality basics like Eileen Fisher which are 😬 at full price but like high street on sale.
