Join Dan Mink, The Rhinestone Roper and World Champion Gun Spinner, as he teaches HOW TO SPIN GUNS. We have all seen the Hollywood Cowboys and Cowgirls who could take their 45 Caliber Single-Six Revolvers and make them seem both weightless and graceful. Now you too can learn to handle your Wheel Gun like a true Wild West Pistolero.

Older folks like gun spinning because they're reminded of the old West. Younger folks like it because of Revolver Ocelot. No matter the age or reason, gun spinning will always remain the coolest thing.

I’ve started gun spinning about two years ago. My uncle was a Reenactor before he passed. Once I found his old peacemaker and hat I took up the mantle. Unfortunately it’s been rather difficult to find resources other then riflemen reruns and old movies. I am so glad to have found this channel to give me more guidance in carrying on his legacy. In those two years I’ve grown to get my own pair of matching engraved revolvers, a double rig I’ve built out of his old rig and my grandfathers old rig, then lastly I’ve learned all the foundation of spins and now growing on to more “fancy” tricks. These videos are such a great help

Those are the newer guys but still great. When they were young they watched Tom Mix, Sunset Carson, and a host of others. I watched their old movies as reruns on early TV, along with Flash Gordon, Cisco Kid, Hoppy, Gene and Roy. My dad was a master grade shooter and as youth was Texas cowboy and ranch/ farm hand. Dead eye with pistol or rifle into 50's. Under his and later Dustinguished Experts ( one of whom wrote the 1911 .45 manual) i became one too. Safety first.

I started doing as a kid with a Co2 BB revolver that was a copy of the Colt Python. Then I got myself a Reck 8560 22lr single action revolver. It's essentially a Heritage Rough Rider 22 revolver, but this one is older, imported into the US in 1969 from West Germany. Hell, I spin my Glocks too. I never spin loaded guns though. The hardest part for me is spinning it forward because my fingers get in the way. I usually go a half forward spin, into the fingers to reverse direction to a rear spin. Then a full forward spin and cock the hammer as the gun comes to rest aimed forward. It's fun to do.

I think the old west cowboys started to spin their Colts when they got bored during cattle drives. I personally think it’s reallly fun to watch someone spin their Colts if they are exceptionally fast. I think the key is start slow and perfect the spin and then gradually increase the speed slowly. It’ll take at least 6 months or longer to really good at it.

Just got done watching another Clint Eaatwood movie, and was inspired to hop on KZfaq and find a gun spinning tutorial movie. I have always wanted to do this. Clearly when you are first starting, the gun is gonna be getting dropped all over the place. Any suggestions on how to get started without damaging your gun, your flooring, etc? Maybe a really thick rug? :)
@rhinestoneropers9204
@rhinestoneropers9204 Жыл бұрын
HI Captain, Great question! Even on a think rug, the gun seems to hit hard. Over the bed is good only for small tricks. The gun will tumble into the wall and headboard, or back into your knees. If you put the mattress on the floor, the gun will use it as a spring board to launch across the room. The most vulnerable part of the gun is the grips. They will break very easily. So if you have purchased fancy grips, practice with the old ones. Sometimes broken grips can be epoxied back together and will last a while longer. The 3rd best place to practice is outdoors on the grass, with the ground a little moist. This will still fill your barrel with mud, but your gun will not get hurt. The 2nd best place is over grass with a thin carpet over the grass. This makes footing a slight problem but it is great for the gun. The best place is next to the hay stack where the ground is covered with a few inches of old hay. This is very cushioned and will not be hard to move your feet on. I think that a heavy layer of grass clippings would work also. I spin rugers and although I've broken a lot of grips, I've never actually damaged a gun, maybe scratched it up some. Obviously, I have spent time spinning indoors but it's my least favorite place. Outdoors in the winter is no picnic but I'd rather fight the cold than hear my precious pistols hit the floor, or the ceiling. Thanks for the question. Have fun.

HI John, When I decided to get good, I practiced for an hour, 4 days a week. Now I hit it once or twice a week for as long as my hands last. It's good to practice a variety of tricks. That way when your hands get tired, you can move on to a different trick and use different muscles. The important thing is to wear them exactly the same way every time you perform and practice. If your belt is not on the same notch or if the belt is off to one side or if it is lower or higher, it can affect whether you can spin the guns back into the holster. If wearing your rig will help you discover the best position to wear it for performance, then it is good to wear it a lot. If you can't wear it for an extended period in the same way you do for performance then you are not gaining much. Another reason that wearing it is good, is that short, frequent practices are good. If you are wearing the rig it will be easy to draw a gun and give it a spin or toss for just a few minutes then put it away and go back to what you were doing. Short practices allow you to actually practice more without fatigue. Practicing with fatigued muscles can promote bad habits. Although sometimes it's necessary. Let me know how it's going. Dan

I practiced my spinning by spinning scissors first. Maybe i just have a natural talent for spinning, but i started off spinning scissors way back in grade school, and i suppose that helped a bit.

@rhinestoneropers9204 . Have been wearing my rig around the place and it has really helped . It is a lot .more comfortable and is more natural. Like you suggested I can draw and spin for a few minutes then carry on and do it again. Thanks for the advice . I am working on spinningI it back into the holster.

I can't do a front spin to save my life. If I try to keep my non trigger fingers straight, the gun flies off. If I try to increase the crook in my knuckle to hold the gun on, it draws my other fingers back in or slams the inside of my hand near the pinky. Can't seem to get the momentum to keep it going. I can reverse spin all day, but I feel like the front spin adds a lot to the presentation. Thinking about at what point do you accept the limitations of your hands and work around it, or to just keep practicing. This makes these videos even more impressive because this stuff ain't easy, but it looks like second nature to him. And practicing can definitely be painful.

Yes practicing gun spinning is painful and sometimes bloody. You might look at my video called Hand Prep. I would advise not accepting limitations while practicing. When it's time to perform, then you work around and accept limitations. Good Luck

I worked out a front spin with my middle finger and will continue to practice thanks for the tip. And yes, I'm using your hand prep techniques but my injuries have been more around my head, shoulder and especially feet. Not a good idea to practice in sandals or bare feet lol. @@rhinestoneropers9204

I tried doing this with my two Colt SAA's 5 1/2 in barrels over the bed so if I drop them it won't hurt them for it's a soft landing but I didn't practice enough to get good at it for I guess it's kind of impractical for me to do and I don't want to keep it up over hard surfaces to potentially damage my valuable Colts !!!

Hey! When I spin the revolver, my fingers begin to bend and press against the outside of the hand. At first I didn't pay attention to this, but then I noticed that almost everyone is spinning the revolver with extended and straight fingers. Is flexion of the fingers normal, or should this habit be removed? P.S Sorry for my bad English
@rhinestoneropers9204
@rhinestoneropers9204 2 жыл бұрын
I know of only one very good gun spinner, a female, who spins with bent fingers. She also spins with her middle finger and not her index finger. I spin with straight fingers and I believe most good spinners also spin straight. Especially if you are new to spinning, I would advise straightening your fingers. I does take some getting used to and requires that you build strength in those muscles. This is just entertainment so there are no rules. Whatever works best for you is your style. You might even find that you can use bent fingers for some tricks and straight for others. I am interested in hearing about your journey in changing your style. Making changes can be difficult. Please let me know how it goes and what decisions you come up with. Dan
