[1] Hispanics being targeted: This is a well-documented strategy among MLMs/pyramid-shaped schemes. See companies like Herbalife.

[1.1] If you’re interested in more of the specifics on this exploitation, I highly recommend BETTING ON ZERO. Catch it here if you have Netflix. www.netflix.com/title/80108609
[2] Survivorship Bias is the well-known fallacy that if you find yourself successful, you may falsely start believing that anyone can be equally successful, neglecting everyone who tried just as hard and didn't achieve the same things. This runs RAMPANT in pyramid selling. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivo...
[3] Only 3/1000 make any money in pyramid schemes after the costs of doing business are added in. Based on analyzing 350 MLMs.
See Dr. Jon Taylor's brilliant work here:
www.ftc.gov/sites/default/fil...
[4] Regulatory Capture
Something that didn't make it into the video explicitly but is worth mentioning. If you find yourself scratching your head, HOW ARE THESE THINGS STILL LEGAL?!, you should look no further than our lovely Federal Trade Commission who has been lobbied to for years and has kept never seriously acted on pyramid schemes except to slap them on the wrist. MLMs own an impressive amount of political power, EX: Amway has DIRECT ties to three (bush sr, clinton, bush jr) of the last 5 sitting presidents.

Q&A:
Are you actually talking about MLMs the entire time?
Yes. MLMs and product-driven pyramid schemes are basically a distinction without a difference. And the word "multi-level marketing is a bit misleading which is why I avoided it. It's using terminology that was invented to obfuscate what is actually going on. The old word for MLMs was "pyramid selling." You can imagine why that was abandoned. Even now, the word "multilevel marketing" is being distanced from, the new new word is "direct selling". Look at the lobbying group Direct Selling Association who is heavily funded by MLMs. I couldn't find the words Multi-Level Marketing anywhere on the website. All this to say, don't let other people control the language of the discussion, otherwise you've lost half the battle. See my previous video on Industry Funded Research, where the gambling lobbying group calls themselves the National Center of Responsible "GAMING". It's the same trick being played.
www.dsa.org/
Why does the video get so dark?
MLMs have an extremely predatory side to them that I wanted to explore. If you got upset or frustrated in this video, that is probably indicative that you having a working heart.

Fun fact he actually sold his book rights when he went bankrupt. He then wrote Dionysus and claimed his previous books were relgious doctrines of his new relgion. He could now legally use all materials from all his books without actually paying to get the rights back or repaying the money he got for selling them in the first place. He was much more of an evil genius than most give him credit for. I read his old sci fi books. They are mediocre at best. Scientology is by far his masterpiece.

@@CoffeeBreaks I've known people who were involved with a couple of companies that employ MLM but which also sold legit products (one was 'premium' ganoderma extract coffee, the other is health products). The first one a *friend bought their *starter kit but he never made an attempt to actually sell them which is why he stopped (although it seemed like if he did he could've made something or covered at least most of the costs) whereas the other my mom did and she actually mostly sold products and people were repeat customers. Can a legit business employ MLM tactics as well? Does it work to their benefit as much as a pyramid scheme?

The Dunning-Kreuger effect is the phenomenon where people who know very little about something tend to think they understand everything about it. The more you actually learn about a subject, the lower your percieved understanding is in total because at that point you understand how much more there is that you dont know. I saw a job offer at my local community college for this business called cutco that sold knives except you had to buy the “starter package” in order to begin selling the knives, when i showed up i knew there was something fishy. I decided to quit because all my effort was going into building clients for a business that ultimately isn’t mine. After i watched this video I’m positive that they are a pyramid scheme. Awareness should be spread.
@chairmanofrussia
@chairmanofrussia 5 жыл бұрын
Nah, cutco emphasizes sales and the products are well made. You also don’t have to buy the package anymore they give it to you for free. But if you fail to make a sale over a period of time, you either have to give the kit back or pay for it. It’s sales oriented, not recruit oriented.

I got a mail from Vector Marketing claiming I can make 20 dollars an hour. Found out they were partners with Cutco. Out of curiosity, I submitted an application (under my spam email) and they returned with an address for the supposed "interview". I punched the addressed into Google maps and I was given an intersection with a liquor store and sketchy motel. No formal business buildings around. I did some more poking around at Cutco and there were many people on KZfaq sharing their experiences (mostly negative). Cutco even had placed ads before those videos attempting to discredit them

Cutco and Vector Marketing is definitely not a scam in and of itself. I worked there straight out of high school and made money without ever having to buy a starter kit. Their problem is that it is HIGHLY sales based. There is no actual central culture or structure. If you sell enough, you basically can open up your own branch. Unfortunately, a lot of people use that as an excuse and means to thus create a scam-like operation. I'd definitely sell Cutco again if I wanted to do sales. Those knives are fucking amazing. My grandmother legit has one she bought decades ago and it's still the best knife in her kitchen. Everyone I sold knives too truly loves the product. I really wish they'd just start a traditional company instead of letting every psychopath who happens to be good at selling open up their own branch.

One thing is that lots of people who go to the seminars and buy products never TAKE ACTION. Most of the people get revved up at the seminar or webinar and buy the product only to throw it in the back of their closet and never open the course. Over 90% of books that are sold in bookstores never get read. One guru told me that he had been selling a course for 5 years and had sold several thousand of copies and one day a student called him and asked where Chapter 8 was. The guru realized that the printer never printed out the chapter and he had been selling it for 5 years before anyone ever read his work. If a student never takes action then he will never succeed. Most people are creatures of habit. They get up and go to work and when they get home they don't want to study or do the work but instead want to watch TV or play a video game. I can tell you that action is the most critical part of making money or any business. If a lifeguard saw someone drowning and just sat there in his seat then the job isn't going to get done and the swimmer will drown. If an ER doctor just stood there as someone was going into cardiac arrest then the patient will die because he didn't take action. If firemen show up at a fire and they all stand around talking about it the the structure is going to burn down. In all jobs including being an Entrepreneur you have to take action. Knowledge without action is a waste. Ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice.
