Well timed video - just about to work on my red osiers (grown from native seeds) - pretty revved up after watching your work!! I've been experimenting with several species - mostly clip'n'grow since I keep missing the window for wiring lol! I personally love them, though each species has its quirks. I have found large cuts are pretty slow to heal, and whorls of branches will cause inverse taper. The wild wetland types take really well to hard prunes and root work, though they can be thirsty. They also bloom when pretty young, but you have to stop pruning mid summer for bud development. Cornus mas doesn't grow near as fast in my hands, but the promise of tiny flowers and edible fruit keeps me plodding along. Sadly, I killed all my large-flowered C. kousa😞

I often wondered if those thin roots on rhododendrons, azaleas or citrus trees are actually feeder roots or if they are just thin. There are plants that have lots of seemingly identical roots, and I was hesitant to cut them off. That is a nice tree, by the way. I love your videos
@susanbossert6833

Some plants have fibrous roots instead of thick roots and a tap root. Rhoddies, azalea and dogwood have fibrous roots. Orange trees have a more fibrous root system, while lemons have a tap root.
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 5 ай бұрын
That profusion of roots is clearly why this is such a vigorous and hard to kill plant. 😁

This is very topical for me. I have a Cornus Kousa that is over wintering outside, waiting for a first styling. I'm pretty pumped to start working with it, but I thought I would airlayer the top before cutting it back. Does anyone have experience airlayering Cornus? Any advice would be appreciated!
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 5 ай бұрын
This was my first experience with Cornus. I would expect the air layer very readily - I know that cuttings root very easily.

Jason (and anyone else who wants to comment), I sometimes hear comments about NOT working on both roots and branches at the same time - too much of a shock for the tree etc. What do you think about that? Obviously, you have no such concerns for this Cornus, but is that always true? Appreciate that if the tree is not healthy you may not do either and certainly not both, but a healthy tree at the right time of year...? @KennetDeBondt @XaviersBonsaiRetreat @Others?
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 5 ай бұрын
There is a lot of advice about what to do when with trees. A lot of it is about ensuring the maximum health of the tree. But in truth you can repot or work the foliage and structure at different times of year. It might not kill the tree, but won’t be the optimal time for doing those tasks. For a first styling of a nursery plant like this I would be less concerned, particularly with a healthy plant. But I would not recommend doing major pruning and root work at the same time for a more refined or developed tree.
@TregearBPM

@@TheBonsaiGarden Thanks. All generalizations are false etc., however - only subject healthy trees to potentially stressful events, avoid weather extremes, and if the tree is 2 days old take the risk, if 200 years old, maybe not so much.

My only critique is you have a lot of branches coming from a whorl at the first branch line. This is already causing reverse taper.

Thanks Andrew. Unfortunately I didn’t check the camera was squarely focussed when I filmed that short bit, and so had to make use of the footage as is. The process is the same aa in my previous video Bonsai For Free where I pot up a collected silver birch tree. Hope that helps 🙏
