How to steam up your Aster Berkshire. A small video I put together with some added attempt for humor on how to steam up a large aster locomotive. I have not seen a video like this online, and was bored as tropical storm Isaac went over my house. All filmed with my GoPro Hero2 (explains the tinny microphone) Hope you enjoy it!

The beauty of the engine is only surpassed by the awesomeness of the video. Good demonstration coupled with good information. There can never be enough how to videos for live steam in smaller scales and this is one of the best. Hopefully we can run live steam together some day.

If you want to save some stram, you can do like they do on full size stream engine. Just put the forward/reverse leaver half way between neutral and end position. Usefull when you don't need full power. A great machine and video, by the way. Love the sound when it working hard. Thanks for sharing...

I will be going to diamondhead this year :-D (that is usually the time I get to steam-up with my online friends) - I also run way down here in South Florida every 3rd weekend of the month. (Tradewinds Park North, Coconut Creek, FL)

I think ur test track is curved very sharply. But so is the engine. Therefore, no problem! Suggest to use that thick steam oil to paint the piston rods, cross heads, and guide rails rather than the 3-in-1 oil. Bc. the parts get hot, i usually use 75W-90 or 80W-90 Gear Oil u can buy from eBay for the rest of the moving parts. Thx for the informative video. Not many video does the complete cycle of from the initial steam up, running, refurbishing water (axle pump-bypass adjustments, hand pump usage) stop for re-fuel w blower/fan, and finally to finish w steam down as so to spk. Most just ends w the 1st stage. For ur nxt video, pls get a better camera and lighting(s) w a remote mike too? Sure like 2C this beast on a long track, pulling the freight cars.

@@drx630 Thx 4 ur reply. Hope 2C ur new videos. B sure to keep ur fine narration and zooming close up shots, no boring just run buys though it'll b great 2c those rake of car counts. This Aster BirdShare seems to have large boiler w great steaming capacity. But alas, too expensive unit für mich 2 buy n won't b 4 sale in eBay used as they're only a few made n those men won't let them go until Widowers cash in, end up selling to his surviving men friends. I doubt if Aster w its merger w Accucraft wld make something like this or like their last UP big engines of hi quality. Here is a Black & White old French Fry film giving u the speed, ferocity, and power of a steam engine. Only 3% of the steam can b extracted for mechanical energy vs. 44% for Diesel engine. 97% of the thermal energy of the stm engine is wasted. So u can c how pwrful the stm engn can b. Wonder how back in those dayz, they were able to film such steady moving shots w its frail tape streaming??? The rails spreading out, closing together, ... very fast, can b suggest- ed in our layout buttttooo can't b duplicated. Never seen such ferocious rod motion shots even in today's color DIGITAL videos up close on any of our preserved (strawberry Jam) steam loco. Hope u all enjoy the B & W French Fries below n at ur Loco MonkeyDonkey's. An Aster model version of the old film, Chaperon Nord Pacific Loco was also made in Hersey Chocolate Liver (Livery) color. Sadly, w no TMI shine lovely. Another u kant find in an on-line stores unless u know a fellow live steam hobbyist who has one, but kicked his bucket full of Alcohol. And, B4 the kick, u were much friendlier than his other friends 2 her??? And if u live here in the States, nut (not) many of Amerikaners bought dem chocolates as they r too colloquial, close mindEnd, dink only the Amer's Frenchy Fries r the best, no need to look for Borsch or Perogy's or even knw they exist. OK, nuf said. So here r the ferocious videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLGCdq2Zsbuboqc.html

Great video, enjoyed it very much. I've got an email in to one dealer who claims to still have a Berkshire kit for sale, hope he does so I can get it. Was yours a kit or did you build it? I have an Aster Great Northern S2 an it will go an hour on one tank of alcohol, how long are you getting on the Berk? Thanks.

I started with plastic trains around the christmas tree back in the early 80's - Slowly worked my way up to an engine of this caliber. This is a gauge 1 steam engine by aster, I was basically a dream engine that I somehow figured how to afford it. Your looking at probably one of the finest live steam models of the Berkshire ever produced and I wanted to show how to run it. The price of them is really high but it has a full copper boiler, stainless steel side rods, brass details - its truly an amazing model and I LOVE running it (I really feel spoiled by it.) This engine is no self queen (and why should it - IT WORKS and it pulls like the devil!) I do share this with my good friends, whats the point of having toys and not share them :-D More information about it: www.southernsteamtrains.com/nkp%20berkshire.htm www.southernsteamtrains.com/nkp%20berkshire-parts-1.htm Price wise: 6-8k ..... they made a batch in 2005 and haven't made them since (and totally worth it believe it or not - I can sell it tomorrow online for that) - Call it a bank account that I can truly have fun with!) If you live in South Florida - Ill be at tradewinds park tomorrow running her :-)

its better to run ti manually, there is a lot of adjustment with the bypass valve, blower valve, drain cocks, and throttle, the more weight you pull the less blower needed when moving, its all part of the fun, definitely not a simple go forward or backward engine

these are works of art so they are expensive (brass, copper stainless steel, will last forever if taken care of), the Aster Dealer of USA is www.asterhobbyusa.com/ The current model in stock I believe that is similar to this engine is the www.asterhobbyusa.com/up-fef-3.html - even if he is sold out he might be able to let you know other dealers that might have stock. My engine when it came out was around $6500, I have had this berk for many years and can actually sell it for more than I paid for it, they hold there value, run like champs, really really cool and fun item I can never think of ever selling in my lifetime, I love it. accucraft.com is also another great manufacture of live steam engines.

Don't you have a funnel for the cylinder oil? When you dripped oil on the running board, it really stressed me out. Next time you make a video, I'd really like to see you using a funnel, OK?
