How To Stop Hitting Behind The Golf Ball (SIMPLE FIX!)

This is how to stop hitting behind the golf ball...
First, I want to explain why you're hitting behind the golf ball, what you need to do to correct it, and then how you can practice it with a couple simple feedback drills.
In terms of hitting behind the ball, let's first define what we want to do, and then we'll talk about the things you can do to stop that from happening, and I'll give you some drills to do.
Now, I'm going to pull a simple alignment rod. Now, we're on a mat here, on which an alignment rod here will work fine. If you're on the grass, you can spray-paint a line or just have a line as a reference. A piece of tape or something like that would work fine.
I'm going to put this alignment rod straight in line with the golf ball on the ground. (Watch the video to see what I mean.) So, the point is, when we're hitting too far behind the ball, that compromises our contact, compression, and distance that the golf ball goes.
We want to fix that. If I were to take a normal setup here, if we watch good golfers, their club will come down, will strike the ball first, and hit the ground second.
So, if I remove this golf ball, and that's the line where it normally is on, what we want to be able to train to do is have the club head hit in front of the line where our golf ball would be. That's the first piece of this. So, when someone would come in to train this in person, if we have solidness of contact issues, I will put a line on the ground, we'll set up as if the golf ball's right on it, and we'll start with little short swings, just chip length, and get you getting that club head to hit the ground in front of it. Watch the video to see the rest!

Hey Eric. Just wanted to say thanks. I had been having trouble hitting behind the ball. I knew all about keeping centered but was still having problems. But thanks to you all is well. One place I didn't check was rotation thru impact. I hit it far and have fast hips but I wasn't turning thru completely. Thanks man, huge improvement. Love your site. Mark

Very nice simplification of risk involved in shifting axis to right versus keeping it more neutral. For those of us that don’t get to play very often, simplicity is the key factor, best to keep the axis in the middle versus shifting to the right...less chance for mistakes, such as hitting behind the ball or hitting it thin. Really good explanation. Thanks very much!

There are hundreds of things that can result in a fat shot. There’s no easy fix. It’s about practice and development of hand eye coordination. In other words being able to deliver the club face to intended point while not thinking about what body parts are doing while you are swinging 100 miles an hour.

I agree about no quick fix. As a high handicapper I am always seeking a fix all drill. Practice doesn't work unless you know what you are doing wrong. I give you one example. Try keeping a soccer ball in the air using just feet and head. I guarantee unless you have great balance and coordination you won't be keeping it up for long. Golf is a very difficult game unless you have never tried it

Great video. I struggle with keeping relaxed and making solid contact on chip shots. With feet close together and more room for error using the bounce it’s going to help. With the practice I’ve done thus far it is a change to have to aim left of target. I have looked but haven’t been successful in finding a good video that shows down the line hit and contact. Would appreciate that with any future videos of Eric with Mary’s excellent recording skills. Thanks again for moving me toward better chipping and away from hitting thin low double bogey creating bullets across the green. Those are the worst.

Shaft has little to do with fat or thin shots. First, your shaft should be appropriate for your swing speed. Second, you should use the shaft that feels best for you. Unless you are trying for your tour card, I don't think it's necessary to go through the expense of a professional fitting and subsequent experimentation. Pros have the time and money for such. And there is nothing wrong if you downswing is steep (actually that should be a plus) providing the other fundamentals are sound. And most important, make sure your having fun.

I wish he had explained the how to of weight shift, which is vital, and I give him credit for that point. But "rotation" is double edged. First, rotation can only assist a good swing; it doesn't make one. And it is dangerously double edged, in that if overdone, it can cause horrific over the top shots, and worse yet, the dreaded shank. Am I allowed to say the word "shank" publicly?

Fun Fact: It is allmost impossible to hit it fat if your swingthought is working "to the target" instead of "to the ground" (here a point behind the ball), just saying :D Learn from the Matrix's Oracle: "There is no ball!(spoon)" You are mentioning, that you want your students to repeat it 4-5 times without stopping. THAT is why your fix works, as the students get a realization of what the club WILL do in an uncontrolled situation (like their golf swing) and how to let it work properly to not loose balance and create a lot of speed. If you learn that, you won't ask for more consistancy

@linderbru
@linderbru 5 жыл бұрын
This teacher makes the subject a little more complicated than it really is. Although his fundamentals are correct, (with the exception of the rotation), I don't feel they are in the best order. The problem with rotation is, that if you start the swing with a rotation, it increases the chance of a mishit (of all sorts). Also, the all important weight shift how-to-do is not explained for the beginner, or high handicapper. Also, he totally avoids the most important functions of a good swing, and that is the swing rhythm and keeping the head down..

Thats in correct....I have hundreds of examples of players focusing on their body motions and playing better...both beginners and major winners

I don't believe that major winners with all different types of swings and body motions, focus on their body. They focus on the task of hitting the ball with the select club a certain distance and direction. It's hand eye coordination, that controls the swing and the body movement. It does not work backwards. There are many studies that prove this blame the body parts idea as false. Just curios. What major winners are you referring to? People get in trouble when they try to learn somebodies else swing, This is pretty much impossible. I know many people who went to golf instructions to fix a particular problem and came out over all much worse.

Mil Sneler If you ALREADY have learned the movement then you don't need to think about body motions. Think about anything you know how to do....brush your teeth for example. Ever think about those body motions? Of course not, your brain knows it. Automatic. Now how about playing the guitar? What if you have never played? Can you just not think and play? Or when learning must someone think about their body motions to play? THEN after thousands of hours of practice MAYBE they can think less and less. The idea that you can do that right away for people who make "in correct" swings and dont get good results can just not think about body motions is just in correct.

Playing guitar is a wrong example. Swinging a club is a natural motion, just like walking.

Studies don't lie. Focusing on body parts does not work. Golf is the worst taught sport in the whole world. There is nothing like it.

Annoying that the text covers the ball. It's a waste because you can't see what this guy is teaching

This is terribly frustrating to watch. If a player is hitting behind the ball, he’s very likely casting the club. None of these drills address that problem. Instead, they encourage the player to hold the club off longer, leaving them less time to square the face up by impact.

Another Dodo bird golf instructor making things difficult. Good grip. Good setup. Left shoulder higher than right. Head behind the ball. Butt end of the iron ahead of the ball at setup. Swing, keeping your head behind the ball and make sure that, at impact, your head is still behind the ball and the butt end of the club is ahead of the ball. Simple. Forget the garbage this guy is spewing.

james63925 Just the opposite. If you keep your head behind the ball throughout the backswing and into impact your hips will turn automatically. You won't even have to think about it. Punch in any tour pro's swing here on KZfaq and look at it from a side view. Head will be significantly behind ball at impact and if they are striking an iron the butt of their shaft will be leaning ahead of the ball at impact. (that lowers the loft of the iron and compresses the ball better and encourages ball first contact- low point of the divot should be in front of the ball). With a driver, of course, the shaft will be about even with the ball at impact. (because they want to strike the ball slightly on the upswing with a driver. Good luck and avoid these hack golf pros confusing advice..

How about straightness of arms and not grounding club at address (anyone)? These factors have been significant to me.

@@carlcampbell6827 Try what I said to do and then try (if you can even remember) everything that he is telling you to do. See what works best. These guys are all about drills and telling you what to do but not telling exactly how to do it. Simply keeping your head behind the ball with the setup I suggested will accomplish the weight transfer and ball first contact that his vid is trying to accomplish and is a lot easier to understand. He'll have you taking multiple lessons. That's his goal.
