Every time my dog would pull on the leash or walk too far in front of me when off the leash I'd just stop in place or start walking the other way. She'd learn that pulling didn't make anything go faster or that I could disappear if she didn't keep track of me. Then I'd tell her she was being good when walking normally. She walked perfectly off the leash. Even when seeing rabbits, badgers, deers, etc jumping out right in front of her. We never used treats when training.

I’ve tried that many times on my 6 month Weimaraner and it doesnt sync in, I’ve literally walked up and down the same few meters of road for 10mins before and nothing. As soon as we turned back to go the way we meant to be going she’s back into pulling like a freight train. It’s getting frustrating and upsetting now

@superstew79 your corrections aren't punishing enough for the dog to understand, you dog is telling you it's just a minor inconvenience for them. try a prong collar to start making reaching the end of the leash more aversive

@superstew79 if you're not comfortable with a prong collar, try using a head lead. When the dog pulls it pulls their head down and they don't like it. Changed my puppy's pulling in less than a day.

@@superstew79 Try just straight up stopping and standing still. Gotta be suuuuper patient. The second dogo starts pulling, just stop. Try getting a harness instead of a collar as well. Some dogs walk better in a harness. Reward your dog when he/she looks back at you during walks as well. Sound happy when doing so. The more interesting you are to your dog, the more it will pay attention to you and what you're doing. In my own experience, ofc. Many people use treats. I personally never have, but I hear it's efficient.

I’m by far no professional. But I’ve followed ur guides from your perfect puppy course and I must say it’s an absolute amazing piece of work. My dog is far from being perfect but in terms of training. She loose lead walks, stays, sits, breaks and down exactly when I tell her. Took her to a cafe in the weekend for the first time and quiet and enjoyable. Brillliant stuff Owner of a 4 month old Samoyed

Our dog knows the heel command and is really good at it on a walks around our place (forest area). Problems starts in the city or with any distractions (ex people). She is completely not food driven and will refuse the best snack or spit them out if there is something interesting around. She will even ignore toys and sticks. There is no reward that she will choose over distractions :(

Having bought the Puppy Course, when I take my Bernese Mountain Dog to town, he can sniff about and go to the end of the lead. As soon as we get to town, he trots nicely next to me. He sits at the crossings until I tell him to move. Car drivers, always smile when they see him.

BUT - How do you build engagement? We have 9 month old lab, who is so easily distracted and wants to pull to everything. She's great indoors and with treats but outside, she's a rocket.

Make sure they get constant exercise, as of yesterday I’ve been trying to incorporate more exercise in my lab-husky mix 8 month old pup and he was TIREEDDDD yesterday, I noticed that he payed more attention to me when he was tired.

Also, try to work up in steps, first work with her inside with walking down a hallway or an empty bedroom, then move to the back yard, then throw some distractions in the back and then move to the front yard or around the block

Thank you Will. I have adopted a red border collie that has had a very disruptive life since she was a puppy. She pulled a lot at the lead three weeks ago when I first got her. I have used your anti pulling technique and she is almost up to the lose lead stage. Next is to stop her growling at me when she is resting or has something in her mouth. I will find your video where you explain that.

Would like to know how to adapt this to my situation, I have to walk with a stick or a walker and find it very difficult to hold a lure, lead and the stick in my hands. Any suggestions?

I really hope this helps i have a lab i cant walk because hes so aggressive towards other dogs. He attacked another dog and we both got maced. Havent walked him in months. Hes so sad.

We've been working through your perfect canine companion course with 2 rescue Staffies. One has had several years of no training which never really mattered (he's very well mannered but not super obedient) until we got a second rescue, he's 2 and a half years old and was used as a bait dog, would you say there's any difference training a rescue with a hard past? He wouldn't even use the toilet without cowering when he got here with us (but now has a tendency to do excited wee quite a lot which we're struggling to get him to stop). We've got some basics down, he's very good at sitting and will generally wait pretty well, but lots of other things he entirely makes his own mind up about.

Hi, we adopted an abandoned 7 to 8 month Sprocker (had DNA test done) just before Christmas, she is amazing, very loving and very intelligent, she will sit, give paw, knows wait and in the process of achieving down, our problem is typically a spaniel one and that's pulling....I'm going back to basics with getting her to heel "close" on my left as I have watched your video for young puppies. My question is how do I walk her along a road to get to a safe off lead area without her pulling? I can't long lead along a road and I can't drive her anywhere without having to get out and have a lead on to enable us to get somewhere to go off lead, she needs her exercise or she is understandably wired, should I use a harness on those short walks or a figure of 8 maybe so that she doesn't associate the lead with pulling ? She is only 8.6 kg but boy can she pull ! Thank you for any suggestions. Love your videos x

Nice! thank you for all that info. I just have a question. Is it possible to use a harness to teach the dog to walk with you? I adopted a mix of Italian Greyhound, and he is really scared of collars because of previous abuse... Is it possible to teach him only with a harness? He has learned a lot of commands from your videos, but I don't want to stress him out with the collar. Thank you so much!

Have you tried a Halti or Gentle Leader? That allows you to control the head of your dog and keep them beside you. A harness puts the dog ahead of you and may be difficult to teach the heel.🤷🏻‍♀️.

You can absolutely use a harness although you may find the dog is still a bit nervous with this going on. Many dogs are anxious of the item going over their head (collar or harness). If so, try desensitising the dog to the collar, I’m sure Will has some great videos on desensitisation

We've just taken on another rescue lab whose previous owners had to give up due to the extreme pulling on the leash, I mean this dog put the owner in hospital with back and shoulder injuries. After watching your video on how to stop a dog pulling on the lead, after four tries using your tips, he's just about walking OK on a loose lead. However, if he sees people or other dogs when I'm out with him, he goes ballistic... barking, rearing up on his hind legs, pulling on the lead... I watched one of your vids yesterday on how to distract him, and I've tried distracting him using ssshhhing (us that even a word), but nothing is changing yet.. we have another rescue lab and I darent take them out together just yet! Any tips would be greatly appreciated..

I struggle with this. Have an 8 Month Female Doberman Pinscher that is as strong as a Clydesdale and trying to "directd" her is difficult when she can overpower you. How can you do this and not be dependant on "treats"?

See Will's other videos where he doesn't use treats. Give your heel command, and as soon as your dog steps out of heel position, start walking in the other direction. Do not cushion her hitting the end of the leash if she continues. Make lots of turns to your heel side before she can get in front of you.

It doesn't matter, whatever works for you both. They don't understand language as language, it's just sounds we're basically barking at them, they learn by repetitive sound = action/reward.

Do you have any videos on dogs with anxiety around cats? My dog randomly started having anxiety around one of my cats and then became aggressive toward my cat to the point where I had to find a temporary home for my cat till I can figure this out. Its all completely random 😭

I wouldn't bring him anywhere near other dogs until you can get a good heel (without luring) in an area without distractions. Then work with dogs far away, making lots of turns so he can't fixate on them.

What do you do if your dog just won't stop? And I don't mean pulling I mean doesn't stop at all. This dog is on the go 24hrs a day, we have been playing with her, giving her puzzles, ice blocks, kongs, walks even hikes and she still does not chill out ever. She's a pyrenean mountain dog, 11 months old and every dog trainer we've hired just takes our money and says nothing useful, usually get "oh my collie" or " my lab" she's not a people pleasin dog, she is lovely and she's so lush but we are pulling our hair out trying to get her to chill. Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated.

I have a 7 month old Frenchie. I've followed all your instructions to do this and he's been great on a slip lead, as soon as I go back to using his harness and lead and he starts pulling again. Does that mean I will only be able to walk him on a slip lead?

Your dog is one of the few breeds who should not be walked on a slip leash due to the very short respiration system.

@@dan_kay he tells you to put the leash high up behind their ears for that reason. It's never caused my dog any breathing issues and I wouldn't do it if it did.

Don't use a harness. It encourages pulling. It was designed for dogs to pull.

There's many different ways to tackle this. Make the event a non event. Instead of going inside the park. Walk around the entire park for the walk. Do this for 2 weeks and ur pup will learn we don't go in the park. On the walks, walk different ways around the park and don't always walk on the same side of the road. Cross the road at different points and walk back up and down the same road for example. The dogs pulling because they know what will happen. Remove that knowing and that is one less thing to fight. If they pulls then u stop. Its that simple. Its LONG but it doesn't require any leash pulls etc. U might not even get to the end of the street but trust me you and your dog will be exhausted. And then do the luring excursises to strengthen the understanding of what u want. They get rewarded for walking next to you. They get nothing trying to pull. Ensure your dog still gets social time as well. Many variables I have left out but hopefully some of these things can help

It’s for the people who missed the others. Ha It’s also the number one problem I see as a UPS driver. I’ve even offered to show people this technique and they refused each time. Pride I guess. It’s funny though. My pitty rescue is so obsessed with marking and lunging at people/dogs even after more than a year I still have to do this several times each walk.

Maybe there are new people who haven't seen the previous video, maybe some need a refresher and don't want to spend a lot of time looking for previous videos. The lesson is the same-yes, but is so valuable repeating.
