Buying beer ingredients in bulk can make your brew day a much more inexpensive affair, and having ingredients on-hand means you whip up a beer whenever you want, no planning required. But how best to store your grains, hops, and yeast? Martin has what amounts to a mini homebrew store in his basement - here’s what he uses and the science behind it.

Yes, as someone that over builds his starters to "save a pint for next time" (easier and cleaner than washing yeast imo ), I would definitely be interested in a yeast freezing video. And by the looks of the comments, there are many brewers interested as well. And last but not least, thank you so much for all the information, entertainment and ideas that you have given us all out here in homebrew land. Keep up the good work. 👍 👏🍺

I buy in bulk but I don't brew as often as you so I divide my grain into 2 or 3lb bags and vacuum seal them and then store them in cheap plastic bins. Keeps things out and keeps the grain fresh.

Please do an equipment storage version of this? How do you store your hoses, fermenters, Kegging parts? How do you put away your counter flow chiller? I believe these steps go along away to making brew days easier, with easier cleaning and set up, having equipment last longer and avoiding bad beers Please also give me a shout out when you make this: John Coram, South Africa

Nice video Martin. You are the exception, I would think, since you brew for video purposes. I only store one base malt at a time, usually Pilsner or Basic 2 Row Pale. I can get the entire bag into 2 - 6gal buckets with Gamma lids. I try to focus my recipes around the malts. In the warmer months I usually have Pilsner malt on hand for summer pilsners/lagers and 2 Row on hand for fall/winter ales. I only buy specialty malts when needed since there is no better price for smaller quantities. Cheers!

I would love an episode that shows the fastest and most efficient way of cleaning your equipment. I feel I have a pretty good process for the actual brewing but find myself cleaning everything in the shower more often than not… These has to be some better way. Been thinking of using a enlarged version of a keg-washer for the brewhouse and feementation buckets.

I do have a couple of vittles vaults, food grade buckets and other pet food bins. But I make heavy use of my vacuum sealer. Speciality grains of 3 pounds or less and all my hops, and even opened dry yeast. I want my hops to last years not 6 months. I have a label maker too, but painters tape and a sharpie is more convenient.

Holy guacamole, I thought I had way too many hops. I have about 40 different varieties but generally only ever use about 10. As for specialty grains, I usually vacuum seal those and keep them in a dark cupboard. Next use, I cut them at the seal, take out what I need and re-seal them. The same goes for hops btw. Those large containers Martin uses, cost about 90 Aussie bucks in Costco, so they really aren't cheap. I 35l pails from Bunnings and keep what doesn't fit in their bags inside a large lidded tub and use them first. In-between malts like Munich and Vienna, I keep in a 20l pail. Enough for 10kg.

I have had nothing but problems with gamma lids that I question their airtight claim. I don't use them for storage but for brewing, and both with the 2 gallon and 5 gallon lids when I know I have an active fermentation with lots of gas production I have found it a real challenge to get the lid to actually seal airtight and see bubbles in the airlock again. This level of air-tightness might not be needed for storage, but I am looking for a replacement bucket lid for brewing that will seal more reliably.

I freeze my yeast, it would be nice if you can show us some tips and tricks about that. I remember you did a video about this on the old channel, so if you think that video covers the entire topic it is pointless to make another video, but if you can show us something more it will be very interesting 👀🍺

I always make a starter and save a sample, half a pint in a pint mason jar. When it's time to brew again, 24 hr 1 liter starter with 50g DME, and save a half pint in the sanitized jar. No big song and dance with slants or yeast washing, just pitch it in before chucking the rest in the wort. Multiple generations, they bounce right back even 6+ mo later. I have only ever lost one culture involuntarily, it developed a pellicle. Oh well, good opportunity to try a new strain!

I would love to see more on storing an reusing yeast. It's $10 a packet for liquid. So for most of my brews, it's 20% of the cost. When you did the homebrew challenge for all the beer styles, did you do a lot of experimenting? I know beer styles can have such a huge range on things like malt bill, hops, etc. Did you make multiples of the batches to find the best recipe?

I've got some uncrushed mixed malts from a beer kit lying around a friend of mine gave me, and they have been sitting on the shelf for probably to five years (not entirely dark, not daylight-bright, slightly below average room temperature) in a sealed plastic bag and now I wonder if they are worth the effort of trying to brew with them. The malt would cost around 20 EUR today, so it's not nothing and way more than the electricity I'd have to put in. I'm still torn.

I've been freezing yeast for the past year or so and it's absolutely fantastic. I mainly do it with yeast that I might have a harder time getting my hands on later like yeasts my LHBS doesn't stock, yeast harvested from commercial beers and so on. I rarely do this with yeast I use on a regular basis as most of that is readily, and cheaply, available at my LHBS and as such I don't feel freezing, making a starter and pitching is worth the effort for those. My process for freezing might differ a bit from others as I almost always decide if I'm going to freeze a yeast or not before the brew day. If I plan to freeze it I make a yeast starter a few days before, allow it to ferment, crash it and decant from it. I then take about half the yeast and either make another starter to pitch into the beer I'm brewing or just pitch it directly. I then dilute the remaining yeast with some water, add glycerol and freeze it in 2-4 25 or 50ml vials.
