Saw another video on doing this that was much more involved in building a jig. You win the the board straightening contest.

That jig would be great if you want to use it a lot and to also do tapers. This is great when you need a couple of times or have really long boards.

Never thought of doing it this way! Good method. I usually clamp a long level to it and use it as a guide for my circ saw, then I run the cut edge against the fence on a table saw

We all have our methods! Yours is one I would use on site where I maybe don't have a table saw handy
@creepyunclephil
@creepyunclephil Жыл бұрын
@@HouseImprovements I'm a GC and I've been doing a lot of framing lately so I ditched my table saw for the circ saw just because I'm pretty good at keeping it straight and it's not so damn heavy and awkward to lug around. But for finish stuff, a table saw is a must.

Another similar tip is to use your twisted boards for jack/cripple studs and blocking. Since these are cut to shorter lengths the twist is less severe, and they generally don't fall on the drywall seams.
@creepyunclephil

That is what I always do, too! And also when you leave the job, always lay down your lumber in a neat stack in a dry place, and weigh it down with whatever heavy stuff you got on hand. If I have to store PT wood outside for longer than overnight, I also clamp the stack together with ratchet straps. Takes extra time, but I'd rather do that than come back to 50% crowned boards the next morning.

Right on. That's exactly what I do with twisted/warped lumber. Especially with deck framing that is going to get composite deck boards. ANY deviation between joists (12" centers) will show so I use a similar technique as he's demonstrating here to flatten any joist with a crown

Instead of a piece of plywood, would one of those PVC trim boards also be straight enough?
@HouseImprovements

They are usually a little too flexible so they may not be straight.

Look up the URX insert and any shooting glasses that they fit (like Wiley X). Look for glasses that are "military grade" or Z87 compliant.

The only problem with that is you lose some of the width of the board. A 2x4 will no longer be 3 1/2 inches.

True. The only time I’ve needed to do this in a real world application was to true up rough-sawn oak prior to making stair treads and risers. In that case I took it to a local cabinet shop and I think they charged like .50 or maybe .75 a cut to run through their big boy joiner :D
@_derpderp

However I could see needing the trick when building your own box or cabinet or shelf where the 2x are hidden but you need them true but nominal dimensions are moot

@TravisTerrell

@@sundogaudio851 You use it for any task that requires a board of narrower width! If one cuts down e.g. a 1x6 into a 1x4, then of course it can't be used as a 1x6 anymore, but it is a perfectly good 1x4. And if a craftsman can't find a use for a use for a board on a future project, then it's time to sell the table saw! 😆
