The first hip flexor stretch you showed using the stairs is genius. Can't wait to try it. I've had 3 (L4 -L5 and S1 fusion, nerve decompression) back surgeries, both knees replaced, 3 fusion surgeries on my right foot, and 2 fusion surgeries on my left foot. I also have peripheral neuropathy in both my feet (Guillian Barre Syndrome from flu shot) and lipedema that affects me from my waist to my knees. My muscles have atrophied due to medications and lack of use in the last 13 years. I'm a hot mess, but I'm not dead and I'm trying to find a starting place. No matter how I try to explain ALL my issues as a whole to physical therapist's they can only treat one body part at a time. I fell a while ago in an alley and could not get up by myself it's demoralizing, embarrassing and frightening. "Help I've fallen and I can't get up" is NOT going to be my life's motto.😊

The short answer, as to why I am looking to work on my hip flexors, is my chiropractor said it would assist with the hip pain (not a high level) I am suffering, from sleeping. So, perfect timing. I also have to go back & watch your other hip exercises, for more tips. The long answer is I have been working on my deep Asian squat, as I was developing what I believed to be peripheral neuropathy (I spoke to a doctor, & all he said was, do you think you are getting diabetes 🤨). Increased numbness & tingling, in both intensity & duration. And, I had noticed my feet were very cold, last winter (I live in the Southern hemisphere). I put all this down to circulatory issues; either the sympathetic, the parasympathetic, or the nervous system. As I have also had major lower calf/Achilles problems, like strains & tears, for over 15 years. So, for the last 2.5-odd months I have improved my squat ability from not getting my knees much past 90 degrees (I have has lifelong knee issues, including 5x RH patella dislocations. The last was a long time ago, now (my knees are now stronger than when I was 25: over 35 years ago). Afraid it runs on our family. My old man had 3 knees replaced (no, he didn't have three legs 😁) And, issues with my left knee, from decades of subconscious favouritism, as well), to a full squat for about 4-4.5 minutes. I can get back up, with a slight push off the ground. The knees still hurt a bit, but do recover quickly. So, a significant improvement. I usually rest my lower back against a chair, to reduce the stress, on my lower back. Works a treat. I have noticed a real reduction in both the numbness, & tingling. Also, the white toenails have gone back to a light pinkess hue. I think the increased ankle mobility is also helpful when I am at work. Hopefully, if also aids my balance (which is another reason I began this regime, as my I fell & broke a rib, after my foot spanned a raised footpath, & I tripped, last December). I really believe the calf areas are more supple, too. One final point, I am nearly able to get to a full pike position (in a sitting position, with my legs straight out, on the ground), with my forehead touching my knees. Not quite; but nearly. Not bad for a 60+. Thanks for all your help, Matt. It is greatly appreciated. Without your videos I may not have worked the above out 👍👍👍

I have recently developed what I think is plantar fasciitis and saw your video on stretching hip flexors to help with PF. I have tried all the other things and found quick relief from stretching my hip flexors and thighs. Thank you! The PF isn't gone yet but it's better. Along with that I now have a little pain on the outside back of my ankle so not sure if my stretching or limping maybe causing soreness there but I do have hope that the PF isn't going to last for months like most of my friends have experienced.

Great video, I needed this. I keep going backwards with low back pain while working on the hip flexors. Tech question for you: What is this magical tracker you're using for your camera? Seems to work really well.

Thank you Matt for this video. Its one thing to know what to do but learning what not to do is so important because it really highlights how to do the hip stretches effectively without hurting our backs. Slow is safe for sure! You give people the reassurance that going slow at first will get us where we need to be healthwise. You are the best.

Had a hip replacement on R 12 years ago, it's pretty good. VERY sedentary job for past 14 years, started walking and rapidly went into what I think is hip impingement on L. I get STUCK when I try to rise from a sit to stand, agonizing pain on interior pelvic cup and trocanter. Sometimes have to painfully get to floor on hands and knees and rock, maneuver of that point. Never see this described or what might best help it. Using all your exercises, ortho consult made. Any recommendations for the next 6 weeks? 12 hour shifts at hospital, floor maneuver is embarrassing and alarming to others!

I'm interested in this because although I did ballet and am fairly flexible, I have had constant lower back pain all my life and now have developed 2 other problems. 1. When lifting left foot in the shower to wash it, no pain till I put it down again, then so bad makes me want to cry. Lasts about 2 minutes. 2. Right thigh goes completely numb when I'm standing. Have to crouch down and it eventually goes away. Matt can you help?

I suffer from chronic shin splints and feet issues, and always suspected that the hips played an important part. Question: Should I be concerned that both my hips sound like a haunted house on Halloween, (they creak, moan and groan), when I do this exercise?
