This is a how to video on the carpenter's apprenticeship math exam. Print the link to the test:

Try and do the problems and then watch me go over the problem. I don't do all of them, but a few of the key problems. I teach math and woodshop and was a building contractor before I taught. Some of my favorite tools: www.amazon.com/shop/colfaxmath

@26:18 😂 😂 😂 None of the carpentry/construction work that I’ve done ever used most of these. Everyone I’ve seen keeps it simple. I don’t have any formal training so was curious about this stuff. It’s bringing me back to H.S. math. Though I’m quite good in math, I don’t use more than the basics so I forgot some of these things. Good refreshing every once in a while. 😀

I really don't know how relevant this is. I took the test back in 96. Basic high school math. Now here's the important part. Once we were in class everybody used a calculator. Except me. I slowed the whole class down. Wrote everything out on paper. So I made sure I learned it. Never helped me in the field. Everything is pre-built. Do you really think that you are going to get to use your brains on a union job today. Only speed matters. You will use this a little. But unless you are a special talent and being groomed for success. You will never get to cut stairs or rafters. However, I do believe that all of this is important to know. And there is a need to eliminate people who don't want to be or shouldn't be there.

I am a finish contractor and this type of test is merely showing your ability to learn and think quick! I use a const pro calculator for brd ft, ln ft, sq ft, volumes and add subtract often in my head to configure total ln in cabinetry! And so on! However make no mistake in order to be successful you must use basic math constantly & consistently correct!

I’ve always had a thing for building projects and sheds and dog houses. I’ve been working for a contractor who has good reputation here in Monterey County CA. But I’ve only been doing concrete work. If carpentry is what you really want to do get a job with a high quality contractor. You might have to sacrifice a higher wage for more learning. The good builders out there have alot to offer and in no time at all you can start doing side jobs to add income.

Multiplying is a lot easier than adding. You multiply across the top and across the bottom. You can reduce first or afterwards. The numerator would be 3x5x1 equals 15 and on the bottom 126. So the answer is 15/126 but can be reduced because 3 goes into both to give you the reduced fraction 5/42
