When programming late model BMWs like F and G Chassis, you'll want to prepare the vehicle before beginning, to prevent a programming failure.
Let's run through a few tips to help ensure a successful service, every time.
Starting with the battery. You'll want to use a vehicle power supply or maintainer rated to BMW specifications of at least 100 amps and capable of supplying 14.2 volts, unless otherwise noted in the service information for the vehicle you are working on.
Even before connecting the power supply to maintain the vehicle electrical system, we suggest charging the battery for 30 minutes before programming, and entering power supply mode.
BMW has specially designed connections for charging and jump starting, be sure to connect your power supply here. Locations will vary depending on year and model.
Once you've connected to the DLC, the vehicle needs to be placed & stay in diagnosis mode.
Begin by buckling the driver side seat belt.
Open the driver door and close the door latch.
These steps prevent the vehicle from going to sleep.
Route your diagnostic cables through the door opening - not through the window, in case the window cycles during programming.
On F Chassis models, press the Start Stop button twice within one second to enter diagnosis mode.
On G Chassis models, press the Start Stop button three times in under a second to enter diagnosis mode.
Remove any media from the vehicle; CDs, DVDs or USB connected devices.
Turn OFF unnecessary components like the radio and headlights.
HVAC can remain on, set blower speed to low.
Check that the front seat areas are free from obstructions, in case the seats calibrate during programming.
Once the vehicle is in diagnosis mode and has been prepared, initiate your diagnostic tool connection and program as needed.
