This one is epic... Advanced plane landing techniques and Camera Setup! It demonstrates several Landing and Takeoff techniques in different conditions (the wind wasn't exactly smooth during these flights!).
We also take a look at my aircraft camera setup with twin camera and audio recording. There was an hour of video - from each camera!
If you are enjoying my videos maybe you'd consider buying me a coffee at www.paypal.me/CrayonBoxAdvent...
00:00 Intro
02:32 So the first thing we are going to do is a normal takeoff.
02:37 Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 lines up runway 12 and holds for the technam.
02:54 Maryborough traffic Technam 8006 crosses runway 12 Maryborough traffic.
Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 lines up rolls runway 12 for a circuit Maryborough traffic. Here we go.
05:57 So this is a normal kind of an approach. And we check that there is nothing incoming on runway 12, we try and visualise where the Technam is.
06:08 Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 turns short final runway 12 touch n go Maryborough.
06:38 So here we are we're on descent 500 feet per minute aiming for the threshhold of runway 12.
07:39 Soft field approach this time. So we've just done a feely normal takeoff there, and climbing out at 800 feet per minute. Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 is airborne runway 12 turning crosswind for another circuit runway 12 Maryborough traffic.
09:10 Ok we are going to full stop this time because we are going to do a nice short abrupt landing. What we are going to do is we've got to come in nice and low. We've got to hold that crosswind upwind turn.
10:10 So now I can demonstrate a short field takeoff. Now a short field takeoff is basically we want to make sure we get airborne and all the weight off the wheels as soon as we can, which means we hold the wing forward, we give it full power with the brakes on, and with the brakes on once the power has come up, we release the brakes so we a going. We'll be airborne very quickly, before the bituman runway especially with this headwind. Ok so short field or soft field takeoff here we go.
12:54 Maryborough traffic microight 6257 turns base runway 12 touch n go Maryborough.
Alright we are on base turning over the dump which is always dirty and we are going to do a turbulent landing. Now this means we come in quite quickly ok so we are going to maintain some power on.
13:14 Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 turning short final runway 12 touch n go Maryborough.
Shall we try a crosswind? I'm not confident but we will give it a go.
So normally we come in we've got to - I'll have to check the crosswind actually. Let's just turn around.
14:52 Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 is turning crosswind runway 12 Maryborough.
15:00 Alright so we are going to do a landing on runway 17. Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 is downwind runway 17 for a touchngo Maryborough traffic.
20:27 We're going to land long this time allowing for that crosswind and the rotor off the trees again but we're going to dive in this time. We're going to do a 2-stroke microlight type engine out fail safety arrival as if we had no power, but we're maintaining inertia speed to avoid problems with turbulence and gusting as we always fly then ... so here we go. Maryborough microlight 6257 is finals runway 17 touchngo Maryborough.
22:27 The last thing I want to demonstrate is 'S' turns on final. Maryborough traffic microlight 6257 is turning crosswind runway 17 for another circuit Maryborough. This time we'll be using runway 12 Maryborough traffic.
22:41 Ok so we're coming around we're at 700, we'll just drop a bit. Now we're on crosswind for 12 now, we have arrived at the 12 crosswind. We're looking at the windsock, the windsock is straight down.
26:38 Alright we're ready for our afternoon flight, and some of you have been asking how I set up my cameras.

Did my first formal Trike training today for a power endorsement from Hang Gliders. I bought an Airborne V-Lite, had an exhausting day doing circuits at Lake MacQuarie Newcastle. They tell me the V-Lite is easy and much more like my hang glider. God I hope so, trike flying is hard... Thanks for sharing this I hope it helps tomorrow?

Captain CRAYONBOX Man I have loads of ideas. I am just getting into this and the selection of good videos is surprisingly sparse. I liked yours because it covered a lot of different landing scenarios and that was insight that i don’t have yet, so it was very interesting. For me (and I am sure a load of other people) radio usage is another subject that is new and slightly concerning to get our heads around. When to use it, what to say etc. Again very little content online, does not need to be a radio course just a bit of insight from one who knows. Take the fear out of it kind of thing. Lastly Navigation. You have done some great trips so a little detail on what you did to plan them and navigate enroute would again be very interesting. I like the whole ‘Stig’ mystique thing you have done, very clever and interesting. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the delivery of your new toy. Thanks Neil

@TheOzflyer
@TheOzflyer 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Mackinnon Hi Andy, the training syllabus here is 25 hours with 5 of those being solo, of course it can vary depending on the ability of the student. The first lesson effects of controls, followed by the next few lessons of straight and level, climbing, descending turns, stalls, then circuits working towards first solo. After circuits and first solo in the circuit done, back out to do some emergencies, unusual attitudes, then first area solo. Now preparing for flight test, once completed you can fly within 25nm, after 5 hours you can get your passenger endorsement. Then you can work towards your x-country endorsement, which is 10 hours. That’s it pretty much, there’s a few exams to complete along the way, and that’s generally how it’s done here in Australia.

Really informative, CB. You mentioned stalling at one point. How does the trike stall compared to a 'normal' fixed wing? Drop a wing, just develop a high sink rate, or ???
@CrayonboxAviationAdventures
@CrayonboxAviationAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Chris Ross Hi Chris. The stall is quite sedate in a trike. Due to wash out near wing tips, the wing continues to fly with high aoa (angle of attack), but if you push it too far or the wind shifts direction, the wing can begin a high rate of descent in stall and this would not be good close to the ground. Hope that helps. Trikes are relatively safe aircraft to fly though, as long as you stay within the envelope 😉

Great video. How did you manage a zoom on the Tecnam before takeoff.Also as an idea many of us are not so interested in the view and don't need music.But what would be good is a closer view of the instruments. So we could monitor heights speeds turns and sink rates.Thanks

Peter Casey Hi Peter. Thanks for the feedback. As you may see from more recent videos I have now sold that aircraft and have a new one. How would instruments digitally represented work for you? It may be too difficult to actually film the real ones but I will give it some thought. Cheers, CB.

The compass is a Silva 70UN. I got some plastic tube/pipe and velcro it to the front tube of the trike. I put some fluffy velcro on the compass leg to hold it snug in the pipe. Make sure you get the right hemisphere! Like this one www.transair.co.uk/sp+Compasses-Silva-70UN-Compass-For-Sport-Flying+8905

Trikes are cheaper than Gyros - but are getting quite expensive these days. They glide quite well, about 500fpm descent at 55kts. Watch my recent 10,000 feet videos for the details.

Steering is Bass-Ackwards on these Machines--Push Bar Left to Go Right and Push Bar Right to Go Left, I guess eventually it would be second nature--Very few Instructors talk about Stalling these Machines and how to get out of a Stall...
@CrayonboxAviationAdventures
@CrayonboxAviationAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
randy beard Do you or have you flown a trike? Yes, second nature, but think of turning or pitching as moving your body where you want to go, same as hanggliding. Stalls are mostly benign these days, mostly a mushy decent due to the wing washout. They normally wont drop a wing.

@125brat 2 жыл бұрын
The flexwing works by weight-shift and as you move the bar you effectively unbalance the wing and billow-shift causes a difference in lift which generates the turn. The easiest way to describe the controls is to simulate it when driving a car. Instead of holding the steering wheel at the top, hold it at the bottom. Now when you want to turn left, you push the wheel to the right and vice versa. Pushing the bar out causes more drag and slows you down, whilst pulling the bar towards you reduces drag and increases your speed. Stalling is fairly benign except in some older machines and is more of a mush with a bit of buffet. If done properly, no height is lost in a stall. Accelerated or whip stalls are a no-no as they can cause a tumble and break-up of the trike 😬

You're wearing a 3/4 face shield on there you need to get a full face shield cuz it's too much air going by and it picks a lot it distorts your voice considerably so get yourself a complete face mask that you put on there or to close down to become a full one ! Because the three-quarter one does not work you hear too much wind distortion like I said !
