Anne Lamott (@AnneLamott) uses honesty, empathy, and humor to write about our world. In her beloved and bestselling books, like Operating Instructions (an account of her son’s first year), Bird by Bird (her classic book on writing), and Help, Thanks, Wow (a celebration of prayer), Lamott delves into what makes us human. She explores the wide experience of life that unites us: birth and death, parenthood and family, faith and doubt, love and loss, forgiveness and hope.
In each of her 19 books, which have sold millions of copies worldwide, Lamott brings her distinctive mix of bracing candor, clarifying insight, and refreshing humor to convert serious subjects like addiction, motherhood, loss, and faith into human truths we can all share. She is the author of several essay collections on faith, including Traveling Mercies, Grace (Eventually), and Plan B, as well as several novels, including Imperfect Birds, Blue Shoe, and Rosie.
Lamott has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship and has taught at UC Davis and writing conferences across the country. She is an inductee of the California Hall of Fame and the subject of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Freida Mock’s documentary Bird by Bird with Annie (1999).
Her most recent book is Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage.
Please enjoy!

I remember reading bird by bird. It helped me push myself to write one shitty blog after another but I eventually stopped writing when I picked up drawing. This podcast makes me want to go back to writing. Not to be a best selling author or anything but at least journaling my thoughts and feelings. It’s comforting to write to myself by myself.

Holy shit! I have probably listened to almost every one of Tim's podcasts... a list of incredible folks and inspiration. And as a recovering addict, and artist myself, this beautiful woman speaks directly into my soul. Simply put, thank you Anne for being you and most importantly, your candor, humility, kindness, and complete vulnerability.

OMG, this woman is so wonderfully and beautifully kooky, I love her so much. She is so wise and funny and comforting and sweet. I love that you can feel that she has really struggled. This is one one the greatest podcasts of all time. Not just the best that Tim has done. The best of all time. For people living a normal life, dealing with issues we can all deal with at any time based on our genetics, parents, life experience, etc, the points on spiritual wd40, pinballing in our mind, birds, dark nights, and everything else they talk about, this was very cathartic and helpful to listen to.

I've been wanting to say this since 20 minutes into the interview, I was going to wait until the end however I have listened to many of Anne Lamont's interviews and by far in this one you are expressing so many beautiful, balls out, soulful, heartfelt, meaningful expressions of honesty that I have yet to resonate with. To say this is one of the best interviews I have ever heard is an understatement. It is so influential. Thank you thank you & bless you not for only who you are but your willingness to share it. ♥️🙏♥️

I remember a long long time ago - I listened to a talk about one of her books... I had found her on the Free Library of Philadelphia's web site. She was so so so very funny and witty. a little informal... she was talking about how much she hated George Bush... ( Which - I didn't really agree with ) But - she is so funny... and very down to earth. She very often speaks in ways that goes straight for my heart - in good ways. I always learn from her. Always.

Yes she is an inspiration; this helped me understand why she’s very pro vaccine as it may help her feel safe but it’s unfortunate she called those who have their reasons for not getting the shot, unreasonable: they are not unreasonable, maybe that was her anxiety talking, she may regret saying that, hopefully, cause she is much better than that!

For me, the inner critic is easily silenced by remember ‘the voice of God is silent’ (generally speaking in the Bible) and like Tolstoy says the kingdom of God is within you. So inner voices that are truly your own are mostly of not always not speaking to you in a voice kind of way. That is an ‘interject’- a past bully. A narcissist. I immediately separate it out- ask Scooby Doo style- who are you??!! I demand it. The voice always slinks away like the evil it is. ❤
