First off, I noticed I hit 100 subscribers!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH AAAAAAH!!! I never really intend to make anything grand of my channel and get money doing it, but I really love teaching people how to do stuff, especially stuff there's no tutorials of yet.
So today I wanted to do an in-depth tutorial on how to pattern a fursuit head with tape! I keep seeing so many people glaze over it in their fursuit tutorials, and many fans comment asking about the specifics of patterning. Hopefully I covered all the bases!
If there's something you're still not sure about the pattern making process, just ask away. I'll be answering questions.
If it's questions about the furring process or sewing, save them for the future! I still need to film and upload the furring tutorial ;3

oh my god, i've been binging your tutorials and they're all incredible! but what made me comment is that trick you have with flattening dips -- OH MY GOD, you are a genius! thank you, i've been struggling with pattern dips for years! that aside, all of your tutorials are incredibly helpful and i want to thank you for putting your knowledge out there. and you're a relatively new fursuit maker, i noticed? you've only made a couple suits? your skill is amazing! keep it up, you're really great at what you do. and, again, thank you for all of your tutorials!

I would have said this differently. they totally forgot to go into detail on how to do that other thing!!!" so you know what, i'm making my own tuts to help XD

This is amazing, thank you SO much for explaining darts and dips. I feel like fursuit makers tend to gloss over the patterning aspect because it becomes intuitive over time, but as someone who doesn't know jack about patterning I always get so confused when the entire advice is "duct tape your fursuit, then draw the pattern on and cut it out". This made it so approachable, thank you so much!

:D First off, YES. You have no idea of how many times I have looked for a fursuit head tutorial only for them to just flawlessly draw on markings for the tape. Second, One question! Could I tape all of the head rather than just half? Im not sure if my head is that symmetrical, and I just want this to look at least decent. Also, I uh.. may have used duct tape rather than masking tape, will this still work? Sorry for the long comment, I just am so excited to see such a good maker make tutorials that you can actually learn from! XD

@@lunabat1911 you can tape the whole head if you want to, there are some pros and cons to this however. The pro is that you don’t have to worry about the fact that your head might be asymmetrical and you can spend more time on precision. The con is that it takes twice as long to tape up and cut. Also, it’s perfectly fine if you use duct tape! I remember I was practicing patterning on a practice base and used duct tape, the only thing is, next time you use duct tape, make sure to add plastic wrap underneath so that it won’t remove foam from the head on accident because you never know, you might not have glued something right or put a piece in the right place. (P.S. another good tip is to pin everything before you glue so you can make sure everything is correct!)

Omg thank you and good luck!!!! So if you got a roll of 1/2" foam from Joanns that would be more than enough for both heads and feet. Paws don't need to take foam if you make em like I do! - I mean I could write the steps here, but honestly if you followed my videos it would be a better guide for you! I really can't get too detailed in a comment. - Make the balaclava. Make the bucket head. Cut out the mouth and eye holes. Put the foam shapes on the face and carve. Make eyes at this point. Put follow me eyes in at this step. Put the foam on the feet and carve. Make the patterns for the hands. Tape up the head and feet, then you have the patterns for those. Put the mouth details into the head. Cut out and pre shave all fur pieces. Make claws if any. Sew all fur together. Glue fur onto head and feet. Ladder stitch external features together. Do one final shave. Glue 2d eyes and eyebrows on last. Done!

So basically, my foam base is ever so slightly asymmetrical (it is not even visible the difference is pretty small), and so I was wondering, would it be better to tape both sides instead of one? or will the spongy-ness of the foam give a little bit of leeway? :0

Though ot may be extra work, you could try to do a layer of duct tape on top of the masking to make it stronger, but away from the foam so it doesn't rip. Ive always found masking tape to not stick well to foam. It could just be the type of foam I'm using. But I also find that ductape is too strong and does rip foam. I'll try it out myself and get back to you to see how well it works

Should I use plastic wrap on the foam base? Or just put the tape straight down on it?
@freckledcatcreations
@freckledcatcreations Жыл бұрын
Some people use plastic wrap, but I tried it and found that it doesnt really stick deep into the creases on the foam base, just wants to slide off and it's hard to get a really close accurate tape pattern. the only reason youd use it is to keep sticky duct tape from ripping your foam. masking tape doesn't have that problem.

@freckledcatcreations
@freckledcatcreations 2 жыл бұрын
ooooh very good question. there are still 'normal' seams that are on every suit regardless of markings. it's kind of hard to explain in a youtube comment - you might have to just pull the tape off and see how to flatten it on the fly. look for any areas that are dips and creases and cut there! knowledge of this realy comes with experience of doing it multple times.
@oliviat5891

Hey, I think I need help. How do you make ur patterns so smooth? Whenever I used masking tape, the tape peeled off the head so easily and it wouldnt even stick to the foam. Plus, when I cut the pieces out, they were all wrinkly and scrunched up.
@freckledcatcreations
@freckledcatcreations 3 жыл бұрын
So masking tape DOES stick less to the foam than duct tape does, but I basically just keep laying pieces on top of the peely parts until it can hold on. I do wanna make a refreshed version of this tutorial in the future, so I will absolutely go into detail on this! as for wrinkly and scrunched up tape, I think you're not laying it on the head nice and flat. Don't use huge pieces, use little strips! Have each piece of tape go on flat. when you cut the pieces off, cut the darts and separations to make it all lay flat! I think I showed more tape cutting footage in my How to Fur a Head video, if you wanna go check that out! It starts around 2min 5 seconds.

LOL! I find it easier to shave it before it's all sewn together - like I preshave the individual pieces before sewing them. Then after it's all glued to the base, I give it another once over with the clippers to neaten things up! In the 2nd Kris video you can see the pieces are messily shaved at first, and then I neaten everything up after gluing :3

I still love replying to questions! I absolutely love helping yall learn along with me! So one-color heads are harder, and after a few heads you start learning where seams normally end up due to how all faces are shaped, but I know that's not really helpful if someone is just making a single head for themselves and not doing multiple to get the knowledge. Its hard to really answer that with just words in a youtube comment, but I am pretty sure I filmed me pointing out the seams on the sea otter head I made last summer so that I could hopefully put out a video specifically to answer this question!

My character has stripes along their snout (you can see it in my profile picture). Would each stripes be 2 identical pieces sewn together, or just 1, and if just 1 piece per stripes, how would you go about doing that?
@freckledcatcreations
@freckledcatcreations 2 жыл бұрын
as long as there's no bulges in the tape, you should be able to make the stripes one piece rather than split down the middle! if you only taped half your head, trace the half stripe then flip the stripe over next to the shape you already drew and trace the other half. hard to really show on youtube, if you were in my patron discord I could send you images that illustrate what i mean!

Oh man, I've filmed a more in depth look at how to know where seams are, i REALLY need to edit and upload it. So a lot is due to practice, usually heads have like 3-4 standard seams that have to be there (mainly in the creases/inward dips like between the eyes, the crease between the muzzle and cheek, etc). Some you only know if you need em once you cut the tape off and it doesn't lay flat.

I ALSO hate using plastic wrap on it, it doesnt stick into the crevices and stuff lol. I'm using masking tape! just bought from the dollar tree. Unfortunately yes, you'd need to tape the whole thing. /: thankfully all my comms have been symmetrical so far, but I dread when I have to tape the whole thing!! XD And you're right!! So obviously it's impossible to predict where you'll need to cut all the seams, but there's a couple of places that you always know youll need to cut - the crease of the cheek+muzzle, on the edge of the ears, etc! As you make more heads you'll start remembering where the seams usually end up.

there's always going to be a seam that runs in the crease between the cheek and the nose, and usually separating the cheek from the eyebrow area. of course!! You don't want to have any markings shifted around accidentally. The marks help you tell if you lined things up perfectly.
