Teaching your dog recall and to come when they are called is so important as a dog or puppy can find themselves in dangerous situations so to stop them from being in them we need to be able to call them back to keep them safe and away from danger. Achieving perfect recall is a challenge but worth putting the training in so that your dog can be trusted off leash.

I love your videos. You are so good to the dogs that you train. I hope you take care of yourself. You seem out of breath all the time. Do not take this as an insult because it is far from what it is. It is selfish because I want you to keep giving good advice to stupid dog owners. Have fun.

LOVE this Will!! Just started your advanced canine training and behaviour course and I am absolutely loving it!! Zak George has been doing something similar on his channel with taking rescues in to foster, but I have to say the dog you have chosen couldn't have been more perfect and in need of an opportunity like this. Please keep the brilliant content and training coming! 😊

Hiya Will mate!!! I LOVED this video and the one on "biting". I watched carefully and didn't realise that holding your arms out was a natural call to the dog to come to you. I have a 1 year old rescue Malinois blend and he was "Come-ing" about half the time and mostly when he heard the "treat" bag ruffling. I'm trying this technique now and wow what a difference! THANK YOU MATE!!! Cheers

I am faaaaarrrr from an expert, but from what I’ve seen in his videos, he would not have the dog off leash until it has learned to really focus on you more. In a previous vid, he had a dog in a really really long leash so that the dog felt it was free to run around, and worked in recall while that dog was restrained in that way. That way the dog could be brought back if it decides to ignore his command. And then once recall is better, maybe then work more off leash?
@vincentpopovski9435

Just like any behavior in dog training, you have to build it with exercises first. Always low distraction areas like inside, then move to your yard, driveway, park at a far distance from things etc. Exercises that are great for building recall are: runaway recall, food throw recall, restrained recall, call off and call away. Dog should never be off leash unless the recall is solid and IMO you have properly conditioned the electronic collar. Because no matter how solid that recall is, no matter how long you’ve been practicing, there will be a point in time where your dog decides not to listen when they’re fully off leash and if you have no way to communicate with that dog then it could be life threatening. When you are building the recall always keep the dog on a long line that way if they fail to recall you can use some long line directional pressure to direct them back to you. Hope that helps

Awesome video. I got a 5 month old bitch Shepweiler from a farm 5 weeks ago and was told by a 1 to 1 trainer that she would need a behaviourist. Whilst I agree the separation anxiety still needs to be addressed, watching your videos and with some perseverance (7 cats are too), she's already starting to become an amazing pup. Long way to go for sure, but baby steps. :)

Hi Will, here in the Netherlands trainers are really focused on NOT using a slip collar at any cost and I see you using them quite often. Here they are all about rewarding the positive behavior and ignoring the negative or distracting the dog i.a. when they tend to pull on the leash when coming across another dog. What is your take on this?

Both of my dogs did so good because I use some deaf dog training even though they aren’t deaf. They just don’t listen I think it’s because I talk to them too much? I need my GS to come, stop barking when I tell her to stop, and here. I got an ECollar for her own safety don’t want to use the E part unless she’s bolting and not coming when I recall her.

My pup is the same when I’m outdoors, what I usually do which works for my pup is to wait for him to stop sniffing - as they look up before they wander off (so he’s not distracted) then call him over. May not work for every dog but I’ve found recall is better when I call my pup when he’s not busy sniffing, toileting or otherwise distracted
@juliea3903

Try using a long line when you’re out of your garden until that recall is 100%. If your pup is distracted, the double tap like Will used in this video would get his attention

Just got a puppy and running through all of your videos at the moment. What treats do you use for training? I’m trying to find a treat that our puppy LOVES that is low calorie. So far she seems to just be ok with the treats we’ve been using but loses interest after we run through training for more than 5-10 min

I’m no expert but if it helps we found that keeping sessions much shorter worked well when our guy was a puppy. Their concentration levels are so much smaller so we kept it really fun and engaging in shorter bursts

Some trainers use the dog’s food as treats. I’ve been trying that with my dog (half a cup over the course of a few hours) and he enjoys it. This way you can keep their drive without worrying about calories! Late reply but hope this helps

@@dorotadonigiewicz1876 I *was* quite concerned regarding why he never made a sound, and as his adopter said he does not bark. However, when I questioned her some more I found out that it was a language misunderstanding, and he certainly CAN bark - as I found out later when I left him home alone when I went to the store. He was quite vocal :) Thank you for your help!
