OH, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! My puppies are Tibetan Mastiffs, and they do not care about balls, toys, or treats! All training classes, online or live, are based on an excited jumpy puppy who needs to be calmed down. I need magic most of the time for my girls to go out:)) I am so happy I finally found you!

I smiled and laughed the whole video. Sooo wholesome. I have a lab who thinks nothing trumps other dogs (we're starting to have consistantly good passes with people), sooo she comes when she wants to. I'm gonna try out these techniques! Thank you.

I've been training my lab puppy with her meal kibble and 99% of the time recalling to just her name and "let's go" (deliberately not using "come"). At 7 months, she started becoming more independent off leash, delaying her recall and needing multiple calls, so I switched to cheap hot dogs and dropped her meals by 1/2c. Began the Beckman discipline - "come" means pronto run in and sit in front close enough I can grab her collar. The hot dogs def got her attention! Back to 100% recall off leash, even when after our cat 😁

Food or toys as praise works well. As you have shown though, if a dog is not food or toy driven, praise can make a big impact.

We have a Danish Spitz, he's a little bundle of love, energy and affection. He was terrible, food or play weren't any help so we bought a slip lead and followed exactly as you did with Kendrick in the walking and this recall video. Love and praise won the day and he's gone from a nightmare to on the lead and never any recall to being a joy.

Yet another wonderfully constructed training session by Will Atherton. These videos filled as they are with unending green meadows, quite beautiful hedges --and an overcast or a lightly clouded sky overhead, complete with that modulated middle-England accent, always make me yearn for Old Blighty where I spent a large part of my youth.

Love your content 🙏🏻 you are helping massively with the 3.5 year old collie I just took on. He has had zero training and is as collies are…….. wired and needs his pack leader to be present. He doesn’t respond to food or toys so I have been using praise like you are in this video, however my praise is a dumbed down version because I am self conscious. As I was chuckling at you praising on this vid I realised if a big dude like you can do it for the dog then what am I scared of. You just helped again so thank you 🙏🏻

I really appreciate that you do videos with dogs who don't respond to food rewards too. As an owner of a batsh*t crazy border collie who literally spits treats on the ground in front of me just to show me that she won't be working for something so lame, I can't stress enough how frustrating training is when you have nothing to motivate your dog with and everyone keeps saying the same thing - the one that doesn't work. There's basically zero content on youtube on how to train a dog with anything else than food and I tried and failed with four different professional dog trainers, because they were clueless when she spat that treat and looked up like 'what else you got, huh?!' It was so funny to see their faces tho, I must admit. Thank you, really great stuff you're putting out there!
@alexhuerta681

Oh my goodness, my border collie also spits out her treats too! I call her a menace to society or a tornado. 😂 When she’s hyper focused on a ball or toy, she refuses to take any food. She only does this when we’re outside so it’s been super hard training her recall. She’s extremely toy motivated so she does amazing on a long lead and playing fetch, but the second I have her off leash, she gets more excited about random strangers throwing her ball than recognizing I’m more than happy to throw it for her. I might have to try out this whistle thing though and fingers crossed it works!

I recently adopted a 3 year old beagle-mix who loves tracking and baying when he catches a deer’s scent. He runs away tracking the scent off into the woods and it’s almost impossible to get him to come back when I call his name. He comes when I call his name at home around the house, but seems to forget it when he catches a scent outside so I know he’s really just doing what a beagle loves doing. I don’t want him to get hurt or hurt anything else so I’m excited to work with him and the whistle to see if we can improve his recall. Thank you for your expertise and for the help!

@@willathertoncaninetraining I have an imported 7 month old Thai ridgeback weirdly she is not food orientated at all, The Problem I'm finding is she is very high energy the only way I can burn that energy off then start training is if she is let off leash in an enclosed feild, I walk this dog for up to 2 hours she still will have energy so leaving her loose to run is the way which then creates the terrible recall issue she has, She just runs off in the feild to anyone and any dog its becoming very anoying now! 😡 Any suggestions?

I value Will's training video's, one thing I wish he could incorporate into these training scenarios is to actually include working the dog in real day to day environments. For example a walk through the neighborhood which would of course include distractions of other dogs on walks barking, cars, people walking by, etc...

Now add one, or rather subtract, motivation. My rescue adult Chow X is not food or toy motivated, nor is he particularly interested in pleasing me, but he does care if I get mad. The only way I have been successful in training is blocking him from doing what he wants. ie learned to sit by blocking him from leaving the car until he sat. All I have been able to manage with him is heel, come, sit, and stay; come is dependent on distraction attraction. Got him to stop biting by getting mad and giving him a time out in a separate room., that only took two times for him to change behavior.

Great video Will. Thanks for all you do. Been doing long line stuff with my 16mnth staff bitch. Her recall is great until she sees another dog. She's not aggressive in the slightest but her approach is far too full on. When stationary I can get her to leave anything as we do a lot of flirt pole and bite work but when we are moving the closest I can get to ppl is about 15ft in a verbal heal before she bolts. I'm thinking an e collar might be better for this type of thing?

Hey will, hope all is well, I have a 8 month old male boxer who has been a pleasure to train, I put as much work in as I possibly can and have reaped the rewards. I purchased your puppy starter pack and have worked from but of that not all but many. We are now at a stage where I’m walking him off lead past other dogs where we are using heel command but he’s forever edging forward to try and make a bold for it. I have a prong collar but am reluctant to use it as he’s done so well but this is something I am struggling to implement. Do you think it would be a good idea to put him back on a long line with the prong collar? When we do meet other dogs I have tried the recall back with praise then let him go again but that seems to be forgotten for him and he’s completely obsessed with trying to play with other dogs. I walk away from him and call him and it’s a 50/50 chance he will come (depending on how long with been out for etc how many other dogs we’ve met) Any advice would be much appreciated. Kind regards Luke.

Thank you. What about a dog that has great non-distracted recall, but rubbish distracted recall. Our system works when there's no distractions so we're not sure how to do the distracted recall. He is 18 months old and intact.

Exactly same issue. Great at this when there’s nothing around but as soon as there’s another dog, it’s tunnel vision and there’s only one thought “I must go over and say hello”
