Bullying should be made a serious offence. It’s classed as abuse in a relationship- yet it’s ok at work
@JackoBanon1

It's funny how schools and companies think that just letting the bullies and the victims sit in the same room and talk about the issue will solve the problem. Would a judge recommend the same when it comes to a rapist or a abuser in a relationship sitting with his victim in the same room to discuss the problem? Certainly not. That's one of the biggest misconceptions about bullying. Many people who never experienced it think it's harmless. Some even think that the victim brought it to himself because of being or acting in a strange way. And thinking that solving it by simply talking with both sides about it is ignorance in its ultimate form.

I was bullied by nasty bystanders after I was stalked by a young man at work. Since I was a desirable stalking target the women there started to bully me the worst. They pretended I had a loser character and that I was not desirable, and made up stories about me which depict a total loser, of course. At the same time I learned eventually that it is them who are actually those losers.

Workplace bullying is WAY WORSE than sexual harassment. I've heard many people say that. I myself experienced sexual harassment, and it paled in comparison to workplace bullying. Workplace bullying is when one person intentionally and repeatedly targets another specific person, with the aim of making that targeted person look incompetent or to drive the target out. The target usually suffers all the consequences, and the harasser/bully/abuser goes completely unpunished.

I've been through my fair share of bullying at work. What you need to do is find another job and never be too friendly with your future co-workers. It may sound bad but there is a reason you get bullied, and it's normally out of your control. Be distant, cold, avoid staff parties and minimise the amount of face to face interactions with others.

It seems that often bullying behaviour is down to the psychological issues of the bully. Those with narcissistic, sociopathic or sadist tendencies tend to bully as if it's normal. I realised early on at work that bullying reflects the issues of the bully and not those that are bullied. I think this is an important point to make, and for those that are bullied to realise.

I was bullied for years. It started straight away from senior management. Then colleagues attacked me for my work ethic. The organisation was completely toxic and it turned out they were terrified of being exposed. Senior management tried to portray them as a world leader where in fact they were actually committing fraud right across the company. When I eventually presented my evidence to HR they laughed at me, despite evidence of racism, sexism and physical threats/job security threats. Colleagues initially listened but some told others, isolated me even further and sided with management. The only answer is to leave, don’t do what I did and try and fight it. I genuinely feel like most workplaces are dominated by sociopathic narcissists who create cliques destroying the entire organisation yet present themselves as the people who keep the organisation together. This is why most people hate work. They don’t hate the job, they hate the managers.

Having suffered bullying throughout my career. I look back now and see I had one big weakness: 1: Naivety.. I went in to positions assuming I just had to ‘do a good job’ and I would be treated well. This naivety was only compounded by total lack of realistic advice when I asked for it - which was basically that same philosophy. Looking back - I did not assess my surroundings at all. I did not assess the characters of the people, or the power dynamics or the goals of the individuals and what they might be willing to do to achieve those goals. I spent my whole time trying to do a ‘really good job’. In retrospect doing a good job, is way way down the list of what’s important in many organisations. Look at who the people are, look at what their nature is, look at what their career financial plan is. Very very few people will ever care about your best interests. Most displays of help, collaboration etc are ‘performative’. I just wish I had approached the workplace for what it is, a competitive environment, that is very often hostile. And sought training and support with this reality in mind. Looking back I really was a lamb to the slaughter. I believed all the ‘positive speak’ and was duped into sacrificing my time and my career advancement to help others.
@annastone5624
@annastone5624 Жыл бұрын
I will also add, that I am very competent - most of my bullying came from people who saw me as a threat. It was not discrimination. When that wasn’t the issue, it was because I wouldn’t collude with the bullying of others, or allow my boss to pressure me into crossing picket lines. It’s called having principles. Toxic workplaces do not like that.
@JimmyJaxJellyStax
@JimmyJaxJellyStax 9 ай бұрын
Absolutely spot on, this is exactly the case I've had as well. The actual job is minor compared to the social dynamics - any kind of autism, social anxiety, very introverted or what-not basically gets crucified without proper social support and grounding self-abundance and confidence to push back in ways we can. Work "culture" is often a massive roast and not the comedic well-intentioned kind but competitive fire for seeking approval to be advanced up the ladder by superiors. I notice the only ones actually mentally sustaining these dynamics have the sharpest wit about handling them, sometimes a barrage of comebacks is still a very unsustainable insecure position - sometimes pure silence is also the same. The sustainability of the individual (job isn't normally disrupting their sleep) seems to determine the real success of a "job" providing career advancement. This massive dichotomy between what values and principles are merely said and which are actually practiced as well.
@annastone5624
@annastone5624 8 ай бұрын
@JimmyJaxJellyStax Agreed. I do think we are all in a process of learning. When I can name the dynamic, it loses its power over me, once it’s lost its power, all the people like that, don’t seem to come into my life as much anymore. Its the absolute worst when you find out your bully is in cohorts with your boss. Its hard to take any kind of legal action if you have no job. So you just get stuck getting bullied without saying anything about it in order to get your paycheck.

I’m not sure if it’s the case in US law but in U.K. law we can take employers to court for constructive dismissal if your bully is in cohorts with your boss. Regardless of a company’s policy they aren’t above the law and would lose in a tribunal and be forced to review their policy.
@custossecretus5737
@custossecretus5737 Жыл бұрын
@David the problem is proving it, managers have access to the evidence you need and it will go missing. Often the punishment for raising a bullying issue is worse than the punishment for bullying because management don’t want to acknowledge that bullying is taking place on their watch, because they would have to do something about it and they don’t have the training to deal with it. But they know how to deal with those who speak out and so punish the victim.
@daviddoyle2085

@@custossecretus5737 that’s why you need to join a union. I was speaking with a colleague and we are now going to record stuff so there’s no getting out of it. They did a background check on those in charge of us and the corruption goes right up to government. I can’t give too much information on that without giving away where I work but let’s say my boss is very much connected with their feet well and truly under the table. It was all kinds ... being called weird everyday because my accent didn't fit with the elites' accent of my boss, being told everyday that if I don't take on more and more workload, they couldn't afford me, sexual harassment, calumny, being shouted at, talked down to, and so much more. There was no way I could file a complaint because I'd have ended up without a job. I always ended up having to leave, only to find other bullies in the new workplaces. Eventually, it affected my mental health so badly that I'm now agrophobic, afraid of my own shadow, with severe PTSD and anxiety issues. When your pay cheque is a necessity that you and your family depends on, to have to suffer such cruelty in the workplace must be the worst of crimes. They are total fakes too, let me tell you, I found everyone knows at that workplace exactly what kind of losers they are. They cheat at work, while actually pretending to have normal family lives, they just make you sick. The behavior of such men and women that harass me has gone to the point where they just pick the biggest loser and tell stories as if I am like that person. And I hate using the word loser, because they use stories about people who have had really nasty things happen to them. A sane intelligent person will never ever even get into the positions they get into. A sane intelligent person also knows very well that he or she deserves way better in life than to have such fake friends or heaven forbid hook up with one of them. They are lame, aggressive, and the life path they are on is not my life path, I have completely different goals and my life path is totally different from theirs. They go so far to aggressively get into my way at work, they all work together, they make up the nasties loser stories about me all day long. They just enjoy hurting people.

It is difficult to explain to loved ones that you have experienced abuse at the workplace. You simply suffer it in yourself and get sick. Psychological and physical recovery lasts from 2 years to 6 years in my case. People around me make fun of me because I'm unemployed, but they don't know the reason for my dismissal is the violence I experienced from swearing by my colleagues, throwing things at me, they gave me more work, they denied me breaks and food, they left me overtime while they others went home, I was so exhausted, I had injuries from overwork as well as mental breakdown from harsh words, I can't describe to you the evil I saw and experienced what people are willing to do for a little money.

I was bullied at work as a young worker just starting out in the 1980's. I'm still cut up inside that I let him get away with so much, and that I can't find him to get some legal justice. I was called names, shouted at, grabbed physically, given arduous tasks that weren't my responsibility,etc. The boss and owner of the business, just did nothing. I eventually left to get away from it all, but realised I couldn't get away from the anger and long term effects. Now that I'm physically fit and better able to stand my ground, I just wish I could find this bloke and just, I don't know, make damn well aware that it wasn't ok. It was a long time ago, but it sticks in your memory.

I get it, but you really have to let it go. Just know that you will never put up with it again, it was a lesson learned. At the start of my career I wasn’t really good and confident in my work thats why my self worth was hitting rock bottom. I didn’t realize that I was being bullied at that workplace because I wasn’t aware of workplace bullying. A colleague used to put my efforts down infront of seniors and at times I couldn’t say anything. I didn’t realize that colleague was intentionally targeting me because there was a time when my performance got better and CEO started praising me and that colleague couldn’t tolerate that. I could see that on her face. Some people can never see others flourishing. I believe that whenever someone targets you like this its mostly out of jealousy factor.

I’ve put myself out there and they don’t want to talk to me because I set boundaries with all them. I don’t chase people if you don’t talk to me, I don’t want to open up to you. I deal with passive aggressive people all day, people are not who they say they are fr. I don’t talk about anything personal and i made up some excuse to explain why. Life is too short to tolerate bullies - don't hope it will just get better without action - it won't. Talking about real major league dark-triad vampires, void of peace within obviously, feeding on others to sustain. A slave to codependence of leeching the energy of others. There's too many opportunities to sell your soul in a toxic longterm situation that is pure numbness and depersonalization of memory come the end of life. Certainly not the highlight and yet extremely costly of your life time. Be bold, speak what you need to speak, but especially live how you really need to live to making a living - sleeping well at night, arranging the situation to better fit your longterm wellbeing. Always map it out, hone in, sharpen best you can, what you need.

I'm from Canada. What is your advice? Same here being bullied, mobbed, gaslighting, harassed at the hospital for over 12 years. I've happened to be the top worker for 38 years and have never been suspended. These bullies are jealous and miserable people. Union, manager, HR and the police are all totally useless. Bullies are lazy bums and stupid managers are scared of the bullies. They say about me I'm crazy, I drink, I'm a stalker all bs defamation of character. The biggest mistake since they removed disciplinary measures. They should arrest the bullies and fire the manager. Action speaks louder than nasty words. It destroyed my reputation. I will never quit to make these lazy bums ever win. If I decide to transfer to another hospital and may start gaslighting, smearing and bullying me once again, I don't know all the new managers etc. like in every department like now. So best to not change hospitals. I will never let bullies try to control me from quitting. Just don't react and not try to defend yourself which will only go back and forth making me look even more guilty. Action always speaks louder than words. Just best ignore them and find another easier target. Never let these low life lazy coward bums ever win.

It started with one dominant senior figure in my workplace, who of course was close to management. He wouldn't ever bully me to my face, it was all done through the rumor mill. He spread untrue rumors about me, tried to turn people against me with lies, pointed out minor flaws (such as not being sociable when tired... who is?) to those who liked me, etc. It got to the point where he lied to the manager that I can't do my job after supervising me, I'd been there for 4 years and did my job well. The manager said he was surprised but it was probably best if I was dismissed, 'regretfully' saying I just didn't fit in anymore. I was casual so couldn't do anything about it. On my way out the bully gave me a farewell card in front of everyone. I was a shadow of myself when I left and was actually quite relieved to see the back of the place, had it been now I would have outed him as a bully on my way out. I'm still working out how it's affected my mental health, but I think the best way to deal with a bully is to laugh at them. Just laugh and don't show them that it hurts. Also, stand up for yourself and out them, to their face. But most of all don't take it seriously, literally laugh at them because they're genuinely quite sad people. These are things I will do if it happens to me again.

I work in a company in Belfast , why I didn't leave before thing went wrong. Many years of redundancy and other companies going through the same the sector I worked in had no jobs I could move to and I was the financial provider for my wife and children. After years of verbal abuse and poor working conditions and multiple mental health breakdowns I am unemployed from a career I loved from a company that could not even honour the contract they agreed which is not a surprise because when they were reducing wages by 10 percent they were taking delivery of their new cars and holidaying on the other side of the world . When you have a breakdown because of working conditions and issues, what help can you get . Maybe the labour relations agency. Think again because that won't happen. What about the law society , well there is no provision if you contacted them to provide you help even though you pointed out the reasons.... so you are on your own . The issue is you are going through a mental breakdown and have possibly tried to hurt yourself and the company you work for doesn't care because even though you have been part of the organisation for many years you are a nothing to them . Why didn't I leave, I wish I could go back and leave so I am not this person

I’ve been subjected to bullying in nearly all work places I’ve been to. I am dyslexic and I often find it hard to voice myself properly. In my current position I get a lid of misandrist comments made towards me if I do something they don’t like or doesn’t look good to them, I get belittled, I’ve had people throw me under the bus saying they’ve asked me to do something and they haven’t. My job when I was in supported living I was attacked and my boss stitched me up and fired me to cover up I got attacked and there were no risk assessments and no extra support for workers when the client should of had two workers on shift at any given time and he tried to get into my room when I was sleeping to sexually assault me. I’ve been subjected to religious discrimination because my boss didn’t like me going to church on a Sunday. I have a bad back from that job because they wanted me to store salt in a very small room and the ceiling height was about up to your chest. I’ve found work life extremely hard and I can’t give up because I’m the bread winner. I have a joint mortgage and a son with learning disabilities.

@@rebeccawills8697 it’s difficult as there aren’t many decent jobs that show up in my area, certainly ones I’m qualified to do. We have the HSE which oversees government legislation. The job where the salt room is I lost because that boss stitched me up when I got into engineering and said I could carry on during weekends but then employed someone else behind my back. I had no union at the time so it’s now difficult to prove as it was quite a few years ago now. My current job I’m just keeping records of everything I hear. I have ears in the place so I know when things have been said that probably shouldn’t of been. I’m in a union so will take them to court if they try anything. They don’t realise how much I’ve got on them. Bullying is insidious and as this video says can be difficult to pin down. Most of us want to give others the benefit of the doubt but when something feels off your instincts are normally spot-on, and it's rarely anything to do with your performance but with not being part of the gang, or because dominant toxic personalities within the workplace hierarchy have decided to make life difficult for you. Any form of difference - and it doesn't need to be a protected legal characteristic - can make you a target if it's the wrong kind of difference. I've never worked in an office where there hasn't been some form of favouritism and privilege being awarded for being part of the in-crowd.

There’s a lady at my job that’s really mean. First I thought it was all just in my head but I see they wasn’t the case. Then I thought “Hmm maybe I’m too sensitive?” Now I realized that also isn’t the case. I’m new at this job (this is my third week) and recently moved back to my home a little over three weeks ago. I noticed this woman looking at me with pure hatred. I didn’t know her (like I said, I’m new), haven’t done anything to her. This obviously made me uncomfortable. So I told myself, “I’m going to stay away from her and just do my work” Sadly they’ve started to assign me to work in the same area with…yup, you guess it, her. 😕 I completed all of my work and my manager asked me to go downstairs and help her with hers. Of course, I didn’t want to help out someone who’s been giving me that look and making me feel uncomfortable but I went anyway, because I had a job to do. As soon as I asked her if she needed help (I had to interact with her to get the labels from her so I could help her finish her side). She gave me that same look again then blew up at me shouting “GO OVER THERE AND HELP HIM!” Not wanting to argue, I helped the other guy. She let this other girl (who’s also pretty mean) help her, which is fine, but kind of confirm there is a problem here. She also always seems to want me to mess up so she can say something. She’ll tell me about something I need to do even though I’m literally about to do it with that same look in her eyes. Just pure hatred. Today I needed more boxes so that I could put the leftover labels on them (my pallet ran out of them). I needed what we call a “pallet drop”. I look around to ask someone who would have a walkie talkie to tell them. Just my luck, there was no one around but…you guessed it…her. So by now, I’m thinking “Here we go 🙄 “ But I needed to do my job so I asked her “Do you have a walkie talkie?” She gives me that same horrible look then shouts “WHAT?!! 😡 IF YOU NEED A PALLET DROP YELL WHEN YOU SEE SOMEONE DRIVE BY!!!!” The machines were too loud, no one could hear me, that was the first thing I did. So ofc she walks away and another guy shows up and I ask him and he’s super cool about it. Point is, I don’t want to snitch on this girl, but she is making life at my new job really sucky. I can tell she is one of those girls that like to fight (physically and verbally) but I refuse to play into that. I don’t like to do either. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to snitch because I know there will be retaliation with other people involved. I think she may even be friends with one of the higher ups (saw them talking today). I wish they’d assign me to work with the group I was working with before. 😢

Imagine all the productivity and improved businesses there would be if unnecessary bullying was diminished. Good thing is companies with bullying don't survive eventually because workers go elsewhere due to the reputation. After you self reflect and realise it is bullying and not because of poor performance or an attitude problem, You must stick up for yourself each time they bully you and call it out. Joke back at their expense.

I was made to feel like I was being either too sensitive or when there was very clear cut evidence of bullying it was totally dismissed and ignored. This seems like it’s everyone’s story. I have developed PTSD from my experience and have been on months of work leave.

I'm 2 years into my bullying. I made complaints to my manager, my people leader, a team leader. Problem is I never recorded any of it. But it's hard when it happens all the time, every day. How to grab any one instance. This one? but if it happens again, do you use this one? or this? Or this? You end up feeling overwhelmed with trying to pin it down. What about the small instances? The one you feel silly even bringing up. That still counts. Many, many times workplace bullying is small everyday things that build up over time and when you do finally seek help, you can feel embarrassed when that ask why it took so long or when you bring up an instance it doesn't seem big or important when you read it out.

I’m dealing with it at my job now. I have a coworker who is quite an ass... He’s very toxic. The funny thing is that I’m taller, bigger and older than he is. He has to look up to speak to me. But still... I’m working on how I’m going to deal with him. Frankly management wants to fire him. The only reason they haven’t yet is because we are super short on workers... Asking the Lord for guidance will be key.

Just be toxic to him for 2-3 days and as management is short on workers nobody gonna fire you

Whenever you have to deal with this person, kill him with kindness. Make eye contact, smile, fold your arms for defensive body language. Ask him how his weekend was. If he's blowing up and having a rough day say something like "gee, are you having a bad day". Watch the toxic person crack overtime, because they can't handle positive people.

The preceptor has been given a lot of authority, but unfortunately is unable to manage the place effectively and the temporary managers at her place there or not on the unit there in a totally different department and rarely check on this department. I have spoken to my daughter about this and I feel terrible that I haven’t helped her before now I was hoping that she could resolve this as she tried to go to the first manager they initially had, but the manager did nothing and said well I’ll put you all night and maybe it’ll work out for you. The bottom line is she is a people pleaser and it’s so sweet sometimes people take advantage of that but I’m going to handle this bully ineffective and professional way with her and show her the ropes

It was my Lead, I'm from USA. Couldn't finish one job without being rescheduled to start a second. Then he'd be upset because the first job wasn't done yet. But my co worker could spend 10 minutes on his cell phone looking up his next Playlist

I was bullied by my boss and co worker's about a traumatic event i had a few years ago. It cause me to develop ptsd about the event and absolutely hate myself. Its has ruined me, especially been treated like this after 20 years working for them. My time off work caused more conflict between us. Im sure the husband is a psychopath or sociopath and his mrs is a compulsive liar. A note to anyone out there, dont point out when a compulsive liar is lying, they will sabotage your cup with a mop and think you wont notice.
