For everyone who thought you can tell gender by the color of the feathers - that's wrong (at least in this case). What makes the definite difference is the growth of the comb and wattles, as you can see in this video!

Thanks. For me this is very informative. My sweet seven Serama are just 17 days old today. I love them endlessly. 🙂 💕 ☀️ Chickens are already hatching as masters. They are more intelligent and independent than almost any other living creature on its first day. Chickens can see really well from day one, they can clean themselves, they recognize "enemies" like cats and run away from them, they can eat and communicate with each other immediately. They are really extremely “adult” from day one. Mine fascinate me every day. 🥰

This was so cool to see, its interesting cause all the chicks ive grown and seen grown by ppl around the hens tend to grow in their feathers faster and thts usually how we would distinguish them and its usually 90% accturate however these 2 grew almost exactly the same, it seemed as if the roosters grew faster or it might be just cause of the color contrast compared to the chick fluff

I was just going to comment the same. I had always heard that if you see the shoulder feather growth, that’s a female and that females get feathered faster. But clearly what we see here is the male grew those feathers faster, plus the shoulder feathers. I really didn’t seem like the coloration of the pullet was hiding feather growth. I feel even more confused now, but certainly appreciate this video.

I had a backyard breeder show me a trick that he said was pretty effective with chicks a few days old. He held them upside down with their legs held in his fingers like shackels. He said the males would try to right themselves and lift their bodies up and the hens usually could not do so at just 2-3 days old. Of course you could have the odd strong hen or weak rooster but for the most part it was accurate.

@Vesper It seemed to be pretty accurate on the chicks I bought. Out of 20+ chicks only about 2 were wrong. Now I would not trust it so much on commercial chicks as you are more likely to get weak male chicks and think they are female but for good healthy backyard chicks it seems to work well.

i do noticed comb and wattles grow faster at roosters, + they act bit different(scream for moma , panic more, while hens are more self relayable) then they go through period where roosters are super quiet, and hens remain talkative, at this stage special feathers appear too, roosters get more colors or different feathers around their neck and crop area, unless they are monocolour then you won't be able to see anything unless you have UV light.

I own eleven chickens, and by far one of the friendliest breeds is the Silver Dorking. I have three of them, and one would come and sit in my lap just because she felt like it, but you have to raise them right and give them human interaction from a young age, or they won't be like that.

Every breed has their sweeties, and you’re right- there’s something about being with them a lot when they’re young that can effect how affectionate they will be later. Still, some just decide they’re not that interested in people.. I have a 14 year old silver dorking. She’s such a wise hen. She isn’t too affectionate but she talks to me a lot and if the other chickens get near me she seems like she wants to get near me but will just sit to the side. It’s like she wants attention but is wary of asking for it. My friendliest chicken ever was a Buff Orpington. That chicken thought she was a human. ♥
