How to tell the difference between tasty parasol mushrooms and toxic green-spored parasols

In this follow-up to my last video, I show how to tell the difference between edible and good parasol mushrooms in the Macrolepiota genus and toxic green-spored parasol mushrooms, Chlorophyllum molbydites. Although Chlorophyllum molybdites won't kill you, it's a beastly--though short-lived--experience that's best avoided.
Besides substantial differences in spore and gill color between the mushrooms, these species vary in other noteworthy ways. To be blunt, I think the color, shape, and scale patterning on the cap of Chlorophyllum molybdites make them look like boobs. Macrolepiota mushrooms really do look more like parasols, lace and all. Macrolepiotas tend toward the stately and slender, with warm creamy colors and light brown scales on the cap and matching pattern on the stem.
Tune in so you can tell these lovely mushrooms apart when you find them yourself!

Nice in-depth explanation of the differences. I've heard the stems be described as scaly, snakeskin etc, but stretchmarks makes it much more clear what we're looking for. I've had parasol mushrooms that had very little scaly stem that I left behind because I thought it was supposed to be more pronounced. Also my new guide covers 1000 species but failed to include the false parasol, which makes me instantly weary of the rest of its reliability. But doing a bit more research now it turns out that the false parasol has not been spotted in the Netherlands yet, so that's why it's not included. Which does make sense. The white or green spores are the biggest identifyable feature in this case, so thanks!

Uhhhh... My previous comment I was still in the middle of watching your video. When you said that you put the emphasis on the wrong syllable I about fell out of my chair. I cannot believe you said that I'm headed in the right direction and that I am becoming the person that I want to be. I just I cannot believe you and said that. I literally was talking about this the other day about how a choir teacher when I was a kid said that and it just stayed with me my entire life and I thought it was funny because I was like you know it's so random how people can say things to you that they think are so random and they just stick with you your entire life you know. I have not heard anyone say that since I was a kid. I've been asking for signs from Spirit and stuff and trying to find my path as far as like hobbies and relationships and all this kind of stuff. I just really appreciate you being who you are and putting it online. Thank you.

I've been enjoying mushroom identification lately. I saw a mushroom in my neighbors' yard that looked like a Parasol mushroom but You taking each variety and holding them next to each other side by side so that you can really observe the differences in the cap shape and everything was extremely helpful!! Thank you!

Hi Anna, Just found your video when identifying a bunch of parasols in Rahway NJ Aug 3rd, 2023. You are a great help and topped off my knowledge of this species. This is my first "ramping up" of knowledge. I also read on Google that to confirm the species rest the gill over black paper and spores should drop in 3 hrs or so in the color of white to tan, and green means it's mean :) Love you help and you are the second subscribe button I ever hit. Thank you for your great informative videos, im looking forward to getting to know more! PS: I have read the stems are to tuff to enjoy but ground down make great cooking stock any inout on this is appreciated.

I'm quite new to mushrooms and everything, and for now I'm sticking to research so that I don't accidentally poison myself or anyone around me, and this video really helped. I heard that the chlorophyllum molybdites is a very common mushroom to find and mistaken as edible- or as its look alike, macrolepiota procera, and I feel more confident in being able to differenciate those two now. Thanks!

I loved this video, thank you, Anna. I'm in Australia and haven't seen real parasol mushrooms anywhere but we suddenly had an army of False Parasol mushrooms with no idea why or where they came from. It definitely was identifiable by the clearly greenish tint to its gills and then stalk.. I'm subscribing.. your descriptions are wonderful, thank you :)

@@charlescooper1664 Parasitic / saprotrophic fungi tend to grow off tree stumps, they feed on the decaying tree matter or the tree itself. Edible parasols are largely mycorrhizal - so they grow alone and away from host material. Check out the 4 types of mushrooms for more - saprotrophic, mycorrhizal, parasitic, and endophytic. The place a fungus grows is a big indicator for its genus. Parasols should be taken seriously because when young they can look very similar to some of the deadly amanitas, due to the fact they emerges from a sack-like structure and can have a similar looking cap.

As I'm watching this I'm waiting on a spore print for a potential parasol/green parasol. The top looks more like a parasol and the gills are light but in some lighting has maybe the slightest bit of green tint. So I'm not trusting anything but a spore print! Do you have any advice about a spit test for these mushrooms?

I just found like... A LOT of these mushrooms close to the beach in Denmark. Like in high grass but sandy earth. I mean the ones we found were a lot bigger than those shown in this video and boy, we could fill bag after bag with these guys. HOWEVER I know nothing about mushrooms and apparently there's a lot of lookalikes in our area and some should be deadly, so I don't have the guts to eat them. I rather stay safe but the thought of *maybe* having tons of these growing close by without anyone to pick them up haunts me.
@Nemrai
@Nemrai 11 ай бұрын
I know that in Norway at least, the green-spored parasol mushroom doesn't grow here. So they've no real lookalikes(I ate my first parasol mushroom earlier today). But, I'm not sure if it's the same for Denmark. There are probably mushroom groups and such in Denmark too, that can help with identification.
