This stuff gets bad no matter how tight you put lid on and it is ridiculously expensive now. They need to make tiny cans of it if they cant make a better can that will preserve it. Such a waste when you use it once.

The Oatey manufacture does make a 4 ounce can, but they don’t carry it at Home Depot or Lowe’s

I used to use a lot of that stuff back in the 90's and if it was thicker as you showed I would still use it without any failures. If it become gelatinous as you mentioned, where it's literally like jelly, then it's bad.

@@ezwa9979 - PVC cement had a chemical that evaporates VERY quickly, which is why you need to keep the cap on as much as possible. You should never leave the cap off even if you're using it for several applications. Off/on/off/on. As the chemical evaporates, it thickens. If it evaporates too much, it becomes like jelly and isn't usable anymore.

As far as being watery, I am wondering if, since medium and heavy bodied ones are thicker, they might look like they've turned into jelly, but might still be good, as opposed to the regular bodied cement which is supposed to be watery.

Please dont listen to this! Its thicker to begin with.. right of the shelf... Every time. The primer is a thinner liquid.. but NOT THE GLUE. And also... Dont apply all the primer ahead of time like this... your not saving time by doing so.. that's NOT how it works.. (the primer cleans & chemically softens the pipe temporarily. ...allowing it to fully set the whole way into the fitting) This is part of why it wants to back out & you need to hold 30 seconds. So unless you're pro.. Do ONE connection at a time... apply primer : to fitting, then pipe, then fitting... Now immediatly apply glue (or Within 10 seconds) To PIPE, then Fitting, then pipe .. push in and ¼ turn as it sets in.. and hold..30 sec.

I visually showed you a can of PVC cement that is new, and another can of PVC cement that is several years old. The new one flows thinner and is less viscous, while the old one flows like a thicker gel. Oatey documents not to use the PVC cement when gelled on their website. I was not comparing the viscosity of the PVC cement to the purple primer.

I've used it like that before and didn't have any leaks. But I was looking for a way to get it back to more of a liquid form from jell like form.

I bought one of those two-packs and the glue was the right consistency but yellow colored and opaque. Never seen that before, it's always been clear.

I know the "red can" of cement which is also for abs and cpvc pipe, is opaque yellow-ish. but the "gold" can is supposed to be clear.

What about primer and cement that has never been open or use? I bought it 2-3 yrs ago. Kinda waste to throw it away. Heard its 2-3 yrs shelf life.

THickened pvc cement still works just fine, it just doesn't apply as well because of the thickness.

Typical three year expiration on purple primer. Although I've used it well beyond that with no issues.

My question is how one preserves the glue after opening. Using it for repairs around the house and then storing for the next use . Darn stuff goes bad and now at $8 for 4 fld onces is insane

mine jellied, i look at ingredients, second one is acetone, third is methal anel keytone or whatever. without buttstuff, so i broke a few rules, and thinned with acetone mostly, and a tad of kerosine. did the trick to recover it. more acetone, tad of kerosene, other than that i dont have ratios for you. kerosine is a reach chemically, but it helped acetone be re-absorbed as far as i can tell. if someone has a smart guy answer as to why im an idiot, please solve it better

my 5 day old 1, someone opened a day or 2 ago, was right inbetween water & jelly like- not as thick as jelly, but flowing for a while(like forever). wats that mean 1/2 strength or nada or wat?😒

@ErikAsquith 2 жыл бұрын
Just to confirm, did you see how it flowed when new and has it since thickened? If it thickened after just a few days, it sounds like it was either left opened for a prolonged period of time, or perhaps it wasn’t properly closed. If it the same or similar viscosity to when it was new, it should be fine. However, if it’s noticeably got thicker, or you are unsure, I wouldn’t chance it if you are using this for plumbing - not worth a leak and having to redo your work a second time.

@@ErikAsquith un4tUn8LE my neighbor, handyman used it 1st time, & at least closed it all the way(tough tightening these things if they are at all warpd), was able to open it by hand with about 10-15lbs of well directed torque(meaning not squashing it while starting turn), it was closed, not super tight as I’ve heard recommended, & neighbor only had it opened for like 10-15 minutes total. maybe I’ll ask him & he’ll remember viscosity(this was all weather oatley) as for the re-do precaution, ironically it was the last weld(glue), although 1st 1 on 50’ of exit sewer pipes(yes plumbing). gS I’ll hav to do the P test - if I pull lever on rv & pee is suddenly all over me, it was faulty weld👋. eazy enuf to re-do that last(which is 1st) 2 feet, with a few new attachments & stuff $25(ish).

Oatey also sells "All Purpose Cement" in a red can that seems to be much thicker and cloudier. I was concerned that mine had gone bad (even though it was new) until I found this video of the same product that appears to be the same as mine: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZqXi6Rhq6ythn0.html . Does that make sense, that there is that much variation between Oatey products? It would be nice if they made cans that seal more easily and reliably. It seems ironic that they are in the business of assuring tight seals, but their own cans often need to be thrown away after being opened, presumably due to not being tightly sealed.
