We found an old vintage piece of jewelry and wanted to see if it was silver or nickel.

What color would Zinc be with nitric acid?

Would it be normal for a really strong nitric acid tester to have a bluish tinge with sterling? I was a bit worried but retesting pieces that turned milky white with my old bottle they also have that blue tinge with the new one, so I don't think it's counterfeit. The new bottle is from China and seems really strong, like it could give me a chemical burn from looking at it funny.

No, if this is accurate, the green means that is in fact, a copper alloy but silver in its most usable form is allied with copper either 80% silver 20% copper or 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper if you’re using strong much acid, you’re going to react with the copper first, because it is the more reactive substance, so it will always go green firstall it tells you is, there is a copper alloy it doesn’t tell you what is annoyed with. It should eventually go a reddish brownie colour

Interesting! So does sterling silver still look white or does it show green? I know it has a small amount of copper in it as well.

A sterling silver piece will turn white. In other words the acid is just cleaning the piece. The transformation to a green color is a chemical reaction that only happens with copper or nickel.

Hi Debbie, Sterling silver 92.5% silver should not turn green. Even if the 7.5% is copper. Sorry to be confusing. The low copper percentage is low enough that you shouldnt have the green reaction. It will probably turn a light yellow.

I used a silver testing solution of Nitric Acid and Muriatic acid, and the part I tested on the silver necklace is stained grey now. I tried washing it but it won't come off. Do you know of a way to get it off?

Were you able to take the stain off?

So I recently had a piece tested that I was pretty sure was 800 silver. It turned green at first and the lady immediately said it was not silver but when I looked at it in the car it had turned it brownish red. Is it possible her solution was just bold and it took me a minute to detect the silver or is it possible because it was only 800 silver that she got a mixed reaction and just did not know how to read it??
