In-depth review on sumps and how YOU can accomplish the same great results! Check out why a sump set up is......in my opinion, the BEST all around filtration system bar none.
The shear volume a sump contains allows for a variety of different media of your choice. They attribute to a high oxygen level and unmatched gas exchange due to the turbulent water moving through the pipes to and from the display tank, in addition to the amount of surface are in each section. With little to no maintenance required, is a win-win for me.
My 300 gallon tank for example, I spend roughly ONE minute per week on maintenance- which is the time it takes me to swap out two filter socks. Every 2.5 - 3 weeks I will change out the bed matting sheets, which is also just a couple minutes of my time. The highlight to my sump design is the aquaponics system and MOST importantly, the Constant Drip System....which has been a game changer. No manual water changes have been done since its installation, and the results are phenomenal.
The majority of my sumps are DIY, I like to customize to my liking. It is not as tough as you may think! Give it a try!

You are the only home aquarist that I have seen who has used aquaponics to clean water. I had a 1000 litre African tank changing 200-300 litres a week with nitrates hovering around 120-160ppm to trickling water into overhead plants (devils ivy) . Nitrates down to 10-20ppm , 1 monthly water change at 40-60litres. You have an awesome setup

Thank you much! This system has been running itself for well over a year now (no manual water changes since installing the constant drip system). I clean the filter pads once every couple of weeks and that’s about it. Probably spend about 10 minutes a month on tank maintenance on this setup.

I run a heavily planted tank+hanging pothos and eliminate all nitrates. I think part of why I can eliminate completely is because I fertilize- plants can only use up the nitrate that they have appropriate nutrients to process with. Nowhere near the scale of 1KL but I thought it may be worth a mention.

This is the best filtration system that I've seen yet . I like the construction because you can actually see the water change as it cycles which is better then the fx5 and 6 . To me I can see it doing more than what it was designed to do,, like a giant water filtration system for outside environment that may have contaminated toxins like ponds, lakes , rivers or even our oceans if you think big. However it may be possible to create a patent for every home that may be in an area where there is city water that is contaminated with lead, nickel, High concentrates of salt and calcium that is to say if you have that kind of imaginative idea. Just the same I wish good luck on your idea. I will be subscribing to you next month. Please and thank you for your time.

Thanks so much for the support! Unfortunately a long video but I get asked about the sumps all the time so hope it will answer some questions. I’ll make a video on the saltwater tank and will start to showing all (29) tanks running in the house. As for the electricity used, all of my set ups are pretty energy-efficient believe it or not. The 300 for example only runs one main DC pump (at 70%), a heater, UV sterilizer, 2 wave makers, and LED light strip. So for a tank that size...not bad on power consumption all things considered. The fish room....all but two tanks run on one air pump with the sponge filters. So far not terrible.

Love the progression of the sump on your main display tank from what it was, to what it is today! Quick question: Since you no longer do water changes due to the drip system, do you still vacuum the substrate? If so, how often? Does the decrease in water after vacuuming effect anything while the drip system catches up to the correct levels? Thanks.

The timing of this vid is perfect! I'm working on tank #9, biggest yet at 210g. The previous ones are a mix of HOBs and canisters, and I've got no experience with sumps. I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate an auto drip system with a sump, while accounting for evaporation. Float valve!! Check valve is a great idea! Is there any risk with a check valve?? Also trying to figure out filter socks vs roller mat. This vid is VERY helpful!
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 3 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Phil, I've been using float valves in this manner for a very long time and it is absolutely the way to go in my opinion. The check valve is on the return line of course and is there in case of a power failur or if I were to manually turn the pump off.,...it instantly stops any back-flow of water going back to the sump. As for the filter socks....the struggle is real. They are good and help keep my tanks crystal clear but I have also been looking at roller mats lately as a replacement.

For the most part I have always used Durso and Bean Animal overflow setups. right now I am running three tanks with the Durso setup because that is how the tanks came drilled from the factory with the stock setup, but also because I can tune them to be practically silent. That is what I am currently running on my 300, 210, and 90 gallon tanks. I am running a Bean Animal on my 120 that is down in my basement. It is a bit louder but has greater waterflow. The Bean Animal is actually the safest as far as clogging and overflowing the tank goes. I may actually be changing the overflow setup on the 300 to be able to increase the flow. Stay tuned, there may be a video on the horizon on this.

Very nice! Let me ask you a question if I could.. We just got a 180 gallon tank and I'm really looking to do a drip and drain system like you have but our tap kH is 0 most of the time, so currently with my 75 gallon tank and all my fry tanks, breeders, etc. I use a 63 gallon container with aragonite in the bottom with a wavemaker, and I pretreat the water with safe to dechlorinate and baking soda to adjust kH to around 9-14dKH, then I let it circulate for a day before water changes. I am thinking I need to do some aragonite inline before the drip. Could you help a guy out? I LOVE your setup! This new tank was setup for salt before, but will be cichlids now. It came with a Triton44 sump. Thanks!
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to maintain the higher numbers compared to what comes out of your tap, then you will need to implement some form of buffer system obviously. You can do this many ways, you can use a bunch of aragonite, it would have to be a pretty decent amount, you can use crushed coral or crushed oyster shells etc. I have been crazy busy lately and lacking on the videos but I will make some new videos going more in depth with this stuff.

@@airshipfpv5972 I used a 3 canister system, like the one you see under my 300 stand, with aragonite and crushed coral a few years ago. I noticed you didn't have the 3 stage water filtration system you used on your main display tank. Do you use a similar system on the smaller grow out tank for you auto fill system
@Jetblink619

I do yes, same 3 stage sediment/carbon filtration in the basement for auto top off of the tanks down there. Only difference is they have float valves instead of a constant drip system/drain line like you see on my 300G.

can i get more info on that bedding you get from walmart, ive been buying filter media on amazon and im looking for another solution that doesnt cost as much. also how many gph would you say your adding with the constant drip system. is that basically an RO filter? do you dose for chlorine/chloramine?
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 2 жыл бұрын
The rolls of bedding mat material I get from Walmart are in the pillow stuffing section. You get a bunch of it for dirt cheap and it is perfect. You can rinse it out and reuse it a handful of times so each package lasts me a long time. I am dripping just over 1 gallon per hour constantly into the tank. It goes through this filtration system which consists of a sediment block to remove fine particles, then through two different micron carbon filters to remove the chlorine.

Why not put the drain at the left side, and fresh water in -maintain at the right side. To me, this is most efficient use of fresh water. The dirtiest water gets discharge out first, and doesnt come in contact with fresh water. Kind of a waste of effort to treat the water then drain it out eventually. IMHO, I believe you will get even better water parameter by changing the drain position.

What’s ur method of cleaning filter socks?
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 Жыл бұрын
I took a piece of light diffuser and zip tied some 1 inch PVC pipe to the bottom of it. I cut the light diffuser out to fit in my utility sink. This allows the light diffuser to sit at least an inch off the bottom of the tub. I place the filter, socks, on top of the light diffuser have a 2 foot hose connected to a high pressure water nozzle. I have really good pressure coming out so I basically just blast the socks with warm or hot water and I am able to get them completely clean very quickly.

Need a little help, I have a freshwater tank with a sump and I'm using filter socks. I just replaced the sock with a brand new one and getting bubbles overflowing from top of sock. I was able to stop the bubbles by raising the sock about 4" above the sock mount is this normal?
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 3 жыл бұрын
That is a hard question to answer without seeing the setup but yes, most setups will have air in the lines. My set up does not. It does not because I have valves that are tuned to maintain a certain water level in the overflow box and drain lines where there is no air. This makes my system completely silent. So to answer your question if I’m hearing you correctly...yes your situation is normal

Whats are you using to keep the K1 from flowing through the baffle?
@Jetblink619
@Jetblink619 3 жыл бұрын
It is actually a gutter guard that I bought from Home Depot which is basically just a piece of plastic with a ton of holes in it for high water flow but small enough that the media cannot pass through. I also have it angled so the media does not get caught up on it from the flow and just keeps circulating.

This is a beautiful setup. The fact that you have 0 nitrates means all that media and sump baffles and hydroponics are completely useless :) Your constant water change is what is keeping the water clear and 0 nitrates. You probably don't even have a cycled tank in there because you'd never have enough ammonia to startup bacteria. It's a great idea and I'm going to copy it! It's a lot more difficult for me to get access to a drain and water from my tank as I'm on a concrete slab, but i'll hack something together. Gorgeous fish and great setup!!
@mikec8820
@mikec8820 9 ай бұрын
*There is clearly beneficial bacteria growing on the k1 fluidized bed and has certainly cycled. I'm certain this tank was also cycled before the constant drip was turned on. * The total volume of this system is around 360gal. A 1 gallon per hour drip, is equivalent to a 50% water change about every 10 days. It will take approximately 70 days to effectively change 99% of the water in that system. While the constant drip system aids in keeping nitrate levels low it is only one item in doing so and is not the end all be all for nitrate level reduction, as explained above with effective water change of the drip sytem. The aquaponics system incorporated here is probably responsible for the majority of the nitrate reduction.
