Dear Florian, thank you very much for this great video. I took all my courage and write a comment. Not only am I learning about pottery, I'm also improving my English. First of all, I can understand you well because you speak clearly and pleasantly. Warm greetings from Bavaria in Germany, Theresa.

you are an excellent teacher. I just had my first spinning class and was so overwhelmed and honestly anxious due to the amount of information delivered and not at all understanding how all of the steps we were doing connected together. I now feel confident that at my next class, I understand the general progression and steps.

Thanks Florian for everything you share with us, in all you do, the throwing, the cutting, the way you montage the fragments, your speaking, your teaching, everything has this ‘Potter-energy’. Only watching you at the wheel, brings back the calmness and feeling of being centered and grounded when I was having my first lessons. I remember that feeling stayed with me most of the day.

Such a helpful and concise video. I used to do a lot of throwing in my twenties, but haven't used my wheel for more than 30 years. Watching your videos has given me the confidence I needed to feel my way back into throwing. Thank you Florian.

I loved your teaching about wing, having watched the cantering video before it. I had @ lesson today on throwing and whilst I could centre and pull up and push down to really centre the clay, when I tried to pull up, I took the top off twice with my nail. Devastating. So when I came home I watched this video and realise I wasn’t pulling up the sides comfortably due to my finger position. So I’ll try the other hand next time t week. Love your video training sessions. Thank you.

I found a tool like yours to help with making the bowls the same width. It’s been 16 degrees in sacramento California so have been glazing inside my house and minimal studio work. I can’t wait to till the temperatures decrease so I can go back into the studio. I’m also getting a chance to watch your videos. Thanks for your videos and great descriptions of what and why you’re doing things.

Your technique it's incredible, and it shows on the results you get. When reclaiming the clay from those large surfaces, do you ever have to worry about foreign particles mixing in with the clay, or even bacteria or moulds developing on it?

@ragnkja
@ragnkja Жыл бұрын
He definitely uses them to throw plates, and also some other forms that are hard to lift off the wheel. You see him use batts more often for porcelain than for stoneware, presumably because the stoneware is either easier to lift or less likely to deform than the porcelain.

Hi Florian can you please do a video on clay showing the correct consistency of clay for throwing. Your clay seems to be very soft and when I use soft clay it collapses very quickly if I try to rectify mistakes. However I am finding that I have problems with RSI in my hands using firmer clay and now can’t wedge large pieces of clay or pull up a large piece of clay. Any tips or demonstrations would be great for an older potter who’s taken this hobby up in retirement. Thanks so much and love your helpful demonstrations. Lynne NZ

when throwing larger 2.5lbs bowls of the same shape, will it be necessary for you to leave more clay in the base of the wall to support the weight i wonder. When i do , it seems necessary.... more to trim afterwards. excellent video . thank you

@Florian Gadsby Another one in the can, Darlin' !! Speaking of beginner tutorials, would you happen to be familiar with any somewhat renowned Potter's on the eastern coast of the US primarily around the Carolinas. I've heard there are some in that area but where they are I've no idea and sometimes searching on the internet really does not help at all. I ask because I have absolutely no idea of where to begin, like which Clay's might be best for beginner hands, etc. So if you know a potters in that area, I be grateful and thank you Florian. 💋 Rock on, 😀🤘 Aszneth "Asz" (Tallahassee FL)

Thank you for the amazing videos! They must take an age to put together. I notice you don’t compress the bases of your bowls- is it not necessary for bowls?
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the clay you’re using. Some need it, others don’t, but it’s generally always a good idea to do it! Even if I don’t with these.

Hey florian - love this series. I recently came across this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcdnnpp50M6Xg40.html) and was wondering if you'd ever do non-demo videos in which you talk about the influences on your forms and their development? I see a lot of influence from japanese ceramics and talking about how you've incorporated those elements into your designs would be really interesting.

Hi Eleanor - yes indeed - our influences as creatives (I'm am graphic designer) is ongoing and constantly reforming - I watch and look at all different galleries and potters - really an important aspect of pottery design.
