Lately, I have been experimenting with soft shackles. These are very handy tools that have tons of uses and can virtually replace the carabiner for bushcraft purposes. Today I look at the How to tie a Soft Shackle - The Improved Soft Shackle. It uses a little trick that makes the shackle so much better and easier to use. Please let me know what you think!

Your video motivated me to tie a soft shackle on my laptop bag strap. That thing had a plastic clip/carabiner on it that squeaked like crazy and drove me batty. I just chopped off that plastic clip and tied a soft shackle in its place. I am sure it will not be making anymore noise :-). Thanks for sharing this information.

I used to put either Celtic Button knot, or a bead onto the soft shackle, and I would just slide it toward the knot to lock it, if that makes sense. But your way is easier and just as secure. So simple, yet so smart ; I can’t believe I never thought of this. Thank you brother

Using a lark’s head is genius! If you also use an Ashley stopper knot instead of the overhand knot, you’ll have a larger, more symmetrical knot. Really appreciate your video editing/organization- very clear and easy to follow. 👍

I used the second way as well, but I would put either a sliding bead, or a Celtic button knot (like you would use to make paracord ranger beads) onto the soft shackle, and I would slide it toward the knot to lock it. This method is easier, simpler, and just as secure. I can’t believe I never thought of this myself. From now on , this is the method I’ll use

Game changer! I'm building a dive float out of a boogie board. I have been exploring ways to attach a mesh bag to the bungi grid I'm building in. I want it to be loosely but securely attached and easily removed. this my friend is perfect.

I know I’m a bit late but I have a suggestion for this. I use these all the time, particularly the second version (through the loop and around the knot). My suggestion is to take a second piece of cord and tie a sliding globe knot onto the 2 strands of the shackle. Once you shackle something, you slide this in place to “lock” it. I hope this makes sense, and maybe you already knew this. Your video just came across my feed, so I gave it a watch and subscribed. I’m sure the algorithm will suggest more now ✌🏻

These work great for tarp Ridgelines. Especially if you larks head it to the loop on your Ridgeline. Then it won't fall off. Slip your stopper knot through the larks head and bam it'll stay all night. Same with your tree straps for the hmmock

One of the main advantages to a paracord soft shackle is being able to make them out in the field. Which you can't do with metal carabiners...At least I can't, lol.

Do not use these for life support e.g. The sole means of holding your weight during climbing. Paracord is known to snap under pretty low loads when used for suspension. It is mass produced cheap stuff flooding the market
@martinmadsen4162
@martinmadsen4162 2 жыл бұрын
I use black diamond load bearing carabiners always i never trust anything else. also pls note that the larkshead pretty much cuts the breaking point of the cord in half
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival 2 жыл бұрын
Possibly so. However I generally use these for light stuff like gloves, etc. so breaking point is not a big concern with me
@knot_funny
@knot_funny 9 ай бұрын
Of course you aren't going to replace that black diamond with 550 paracord, but an Amsteel/Dyneema soft shackle properly spliced with a button knot will usually outperform a carabiner of similar size (I'm not familiar with the specs of the one you mention). Look up some load tests. It's a different level of commitment and practice to make versus this - the button knot is a devil to tie ... the much easier diamond knot isn't as strong) - but they are awesome. If you don't want to make your own, of course you can buy them.

The only problem with the slipknot version is under too much stress it can lockdown so hard that you have to cut the line to undo it. Say a tarp in a heavy wind.
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival

@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival metal on fabric has no sound if no carabiners and soft shackles are great. They can hold practically anything.

Everything you’ve shown makes that line much weaker. Proper splicing will do a much more effective job without severely reducing the strength.
